Did Sri Lanka Animals Know Tsunami Was Coming?
12-29-4

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lankan wildlife officials are stunned -- the worst tsunami in memory has killed around 22,000 people along the Indian Ocean island's coast, but they can't find any dead animals.

Giant waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km (2 miles) inland at Yala National Park in the ravaged southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants and several leopards.

"The strange thing is we haven't recorded any dead animals," H.D. Ratnayake, deputy director of the national Wildlife Department, told Reuters on Wednesday.

"No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit," he added. "I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening."

At least 40 tourists, including nine Japanese, were drowned.

The tsunami was triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean on Sunday, which sent waves up to 5-metres (15-feet) high crashing onto Sri Lanka's southern, eastern and northern seaboard, flooding whole towns and villages, destroying hotels and causing widespread destruction.

Re: South-east Asian tsunami kills thousands

I saw a story that specifically mentioned all the dead human bodies...AND animals everywhere.   Cows, stuff like that.    This is the first I've heard of a lack of dead animals.   While I totally know for a fact that animals are able to sense earthquakes / weather anomalies before they happen, (I've seen animals do this and there are personal stories about this phenomenon over on the Goro forum....)  I do however question this story.   "Can't find any dead animals" as the article states simply can't be true......

(on a sidenote, there are some incredible stories on the goro forum like i mentioned about people's animals wigging out during the time of the earthquake over in the indian ocean.  most of the stories centered around Canada.  intriguing....)

Well I'm sure it's not true for all eleven countries that were affected however that story only mentions a specific national park in Sri Lanka. Perhaps most of the animals just weren't near the ocean at the time the tsunami struck.

Re: South-east Asian tsunami kills thousands

I doubt very much that anyone on this forum is surprised or shocked by the following article excerpted from www.prisonplanet.com

Foreknowledge of A Natural Disaster
Washington was aware that a deadly Tidal Wave was building up in the Indian Ocean

Michel Chossudovsky | December 29 2004

The US Military and the State Department were given advanced warning. America's Navy base on the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean was notified.

Why were fishermen in India, Sri Lanka and Thailand not provided with the same warnings as the US Navy and the US State Department?

Why did the US State Department remain mum on the existence of an impending catastrophe?

With a modern communications system, why did the information not get out? By email, telephone, fax, satellite TV... ?

It could have saved the lives of more than 80,000 people. And the death toll is rising.

The earthquake was a Magnitude 9.0 on the Richter scale, among the highest in recorded history. US authorities had initially recorded 8.0 on the Richter scale.

As confirmed by several reports, US scientists in Hawaii, had advanced knowledge regarding an impending catastrophe, but failed to contact their Asian counterparts.

Charles McCreery of the Pacific Warning Center in Hawaii confirmed that his team tried desperately to get in touch with his counterparts in Asia. According to McCreery, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's center in Honolulu, the team did its utmost to contact the countries. (The NOAA in Hawaii's Report at http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2004/s2357.htm ).

His team contacted the US State Department, which apparently contacted the Asian governments. The Indian government confirms that no such warning was received. (The Hindu, 27 Dec 2004)

Nine (9.0) on the Richter scale: The Director of the Hawaii Warning Center stated that "they did not know" that the earthquake would generate a deadly tidal wave until it had hit Sri Lanka, more than one and a half hours later, at 2.30 GMT. (see Timeline below)

"Not until the deadly wave hit Sri Lanka and the scientists in Honolulu saw news reports of the damage there did they recognize what was happening... 'Then we knew there was something moving across the Indian Ocean,' said Charles McCreery. (quoted in the NYT, 28 Dec 2004 ).

This statement is at odds with the Timeline of the tidal wave disaster. Thailand was hit almost an hour before Sri Lanka and the news reports were already out. Surely, these reports out of Thailand were known to the scientists in Hawaii, not to mention the office of Sec. Colin Powell, well before the tidal wave reached Sri Lanka.

''We wanted to try to do something, but without a plan in place then, it was not an effective way to issue a warning, or to have it acted upon,'' Dr. McCreery said. ''There would have still been some time -- not a lot of time, but some time -- if there was something that could be done in Madagascar, or on the coast of Africa.''

The above statement is also inconsistent.

The tidal wave reached the East African coastline several hours after it reached The Maldives islands. According to news reports, Male, the capital of the Maldives was hit three hours after the earthquake, at approximately 4.00 GMT. By that time everybody around the World knew.

It is worth noting that the US Navy was fully aware of the deadly tidal wave, because the Navy was on the Pacific Warning Center's list of contacts. Moreover, America's strategic Naval base on the island of Diego Garcia had also been notified. Although directly in the path of the tidal wave (see animated chart below), the Diego Garcia military base reported "no damage".

"One of the few places in the Indian Ocean that got the message of the quake was Diego Garcia, a speck of an island with a United States Navy base, because the Pacific warning center's contact list includes the Navy. Finding the appropriate people in Sri Lanka or India was harder." (NYT, 28 Dec 2004, emphasis added)

Now how hard is it to pick up the phone and call Sri Lanka?

According to Charles McCreery, director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

"We don't have contacts in our address book for anybody in that part of the world."

Only after the first waves hit Sri Lanka did workers at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre [PTWC] and others in Hawaii start making phone calls to US diplomats in Madagascar and Mauritius in an attempt to head off further disaster.

"We didn't have a contact in place where you could just pick up the phone," Dolores Clark, spokeswoman for the International Tsunami Information Centre in Hawaii said. "We were starting from scratch."

These statement on the surface are inconsistent, since several Indian Ocean Asian countries are in fact members of the Tsunami Warning System.

Re: South-east Asian tsunami kills thousands

There's something that has been bugging at me for the past few days--if the earthquake was off the coast of Sumatra, and the island was supposedly displaced by 100 ft., why aren't we hearing about massive destruction on the island itself? Does this island not have people and infrastructure? (rhetorical question)

I just did an internet search, looked at rense.com, and have been looking at others for the past few days, including the one Lakme just posted, and I'm not seeing any reports about what happened on Sumatra. All the search hits say Sumatran earthquake spawns tsunamis, and that's it.

Has anybody else taken note of this? Am I overlooking something?

Re: South-east Asian tsunami kills thousands

Auendove,  I found this article this morning.  I believe part of the "problem" is the news casters interchange Indonesia with Sumatra. In other words, when they are speaking of Sumatra they say Indonesia ... also, Sumatra roads/infrastructure are devestated so nothing was coming out of Sumatra -

I agree.  But I've also gotten to the point where I realize there's nothing I can do about other people's ignorant buffoonery.   I read it and frown, then have to realize that there's nothing I can do about it.   Besides, everybody gets theirs in due time.  You can't walk around with the attitude they have and have a blissful, happy existance, with mental peace of mind and where everything is positive and smooth.   It all comes back around to bite people in the arse, even if they don't even know where "it" is coming from.  I'd hate to see the kinds of lives those people have.

Andy,

Talk about your [W]holy kwap, eh? I didn't even read all of this one, it only took one glance. Much to much for me to stomach while I'm eating lunch... this is just about the worst of the worst that humanity has to offer.

Well yeah, exactly.  I mean, you can't walk around with that kind of long term mentality, wishing death on people based on hateful bigotry and rubbing your hands together in glee when it happens and not have some kind of spiritual repercussions to face.  It's the polar opposite mentality to "We are all One."   They're speeding in the opposite direction of the Creator Source at full force, straight into the gaping maw of the darkside.    That's their choice, their life, their karma, not ours.   It's shocking sometimes for people to encounter that kind of hateful, sick attitude, but the sad fact is, this world is filled with people like what you see in that link.   It's not uncommon.   But it doesn't mean we have to be sucked into it.

You know that saying, you get back what you put out.  Well, when somebody resonates with that mentality...they're going to draw some very negative, nasty things in to their lives.   So for anybody who reads that link and feels crappy afterwards, just know that those people from that church in that link have lives which reflect their mentality.   Know that and move on, don't get sucked in to their negativity and send negative thoughts to the very people putting out negative thoughts themselves.   It becomes like a loop.

Be the Wave

Re: South-east Asian tsunami kills thousands

Just some interesting thoughts about this "issue".  Scientists have talked about the earth having one big continent (called Pangea I think) and that it split into many parts as the earth's plates moved apart.  Now, we just had one big eathquake followed by a tsunami which supposedly threw off the earth's rotation.  If there ever was a "Pangea", our planet must have been slowly buckin-and-rollin in her orbit.  (I don't remember being taught in school that earthquakes or tsunamis actually affected earth's orbit, do you?)  I'm still skeptical about this whole thing and I feel like there is something fishy about it.

I swear that I'm going to punch the next short sighted idiot I talk to who says "its the end times, its the end times".  :x  The end of time is when 'everything" stops moving.  Even if our planet blows the hell up, there is still going to be a universe left.  *sigh*  Sorry, just had to get that off my chest and write it.  Come on people, even the bible never said it was going to be the end of time.

Thank you!   Same here.   I just posted something similar to this on another forum, where I was like "it's not 'the end' people, come on!"   I said that at best, it was a time of change, maybe even rebirth, but not the end.   Even if a comet or an asteroid hits, life in some form still continues.  Geez.   So yes, I hear you, and I echo your sentiment.

Re: South-east Asian tsunami kills thousands

Now the area is being flooded out by a "deluge from the skies."   What's going ON down there??    This is getting strange.....

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=s … p;ncid=514

Also in the article, it mentions how some Buddhist statues were found in the rubble, unscathed, and that Buddhist monks were saying it was a "sign", that people weren't living according to religious virtues.   I have a problem with that sort of superstition based logic, because by that rationale most of the rest of the world should have been dealt the same type of punishments because I think most people aren't living lives that religious leaders would consider "up to par."

Anyway, just some thoughts...

Re: South-east Asian tsunami kills thousands

The Red Cross has gathered around $20 million so far from Americans. That's less than they spent in one f*cking day to go see a movie about people getting hit by a tidal wave. A bad movie.

Not to mention the $3 billion spent in the wake of 9/11, compared to the paltry $35 million GW is sending as relief.
