Topic: Eckhart Tolle

This post is in response to an email sent to me by a fellow Noble Realmer. smile

Last week I picked up two of Eckhart Tolle's books, "The Power of Now" and "A New Earth." I've been reading them simultaneously, and even though I'm only about halfway done with them, I'm totally amazed by Eckhart's writing. I highly recommend these books! The message he conveys is very simple and very straight-to-the-point. There's no fluff involved here.

Eckhart's view on spirituality is very unique in that he does not appeal to your ego. In fact he does just the opposite. His books are a deliberate attempt to break down your ego and sense of self. Ironically, this makes the books a bit difficult to read. It's frustrating because the books are not "fun." Your ego will creep in and you'll want to put the book down again and again, and find something more "fun" to do. At least that's the effect they have on me. The real power of his books comes as an afterthought, after you've put them down for the day.

Since reading Eckhart's books, my outlook has already changed dramatically. It's become much easier to observe the ego in "my" self and otherselves.  I see myself less as an individual and more as an instrument of the Tao, the Beingness of existence, the Isness, the Source, and so on. Every life is an expression of this force. Think of the Force from Star Wars. Yoda had it right all along.

Anyway, check Eckhart's books out if you're looking for something new to read. You won't regret it. smile

Is there an online sample anywhere?

Re: Eckhart Tolle

Amazon.com has some sample pages from the books, including the first few pages of the first chapter:

The Power of Now : http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/1577311 … eader-link
Stillness Speaks : http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/1577314 … eader-link

Unfortunately they don't have sample pages from A New Earth, at least not yet.

Also found some stuff from the Power of Now on Google book search: http://books.google.com/books?ie=UTF-8& … olle+earth

Re: Eckhart Tolle

In my opinion Tolle is among the greatest spiritual teachers alive today. I read "Power of Now" over 4yrs ago, said "yeah, makes sense" and quickly went on to something else.  Later I went back and began to investigate the deep meaning he is trying to convey. I had to read a paragraph, meditate on it, read another paragraph, etc.  He talks about the "pain-body", a thoughtform/emotion parasite that feeds on all humans.  I already had the inkling that most of my emotional pain was being caused by something other than my true self. Tolle explained to me how the pain-body operates, how to see it when it "comes to feed", and best of all how to become immune to it.  My advice to anyone is to read as much of his work as you can, read it very slowly, get his CD's or videos, he has a wonderful loving presence that is direct yet soft and mixed with humor.

Wow...thanks, Seeker, for this information on Tolle. I have heard much about him but just never seem to be drawn to check out his books. But after reading the sample pages I am now most interested! The right time, the right place...always comes around! Thanks again! smile
And We O D ...I like your idea...Sometimes certain books are so loaded with meaningful information you can't just zip through it... it takes time to allow it to absorb and 'see.'

Re: Eckhart Tolle

I've read all of Tolle's books and I'm presently working on "A New Earth", which is of course also very good.

The one book that impressed me the most, so far, is "Stillness Speak's", he actually goes as far as calling this a sacred book in the introduction, and when I first read that I was like "say what?".   To call a book you've written sacred, or a sacred text is no little thing, but then again, after I read it I would have to say that Tolle might have been completely right.

While writing Stillness Speak Tolle say's he was in a very silent state and that silence is transfered to the reader, which was my experience as I read it.   He even say's just holding this book in your hand's can quiet the mind, which is no easy feat, and yet I could feel that happen to me.  So Tolle amazes me to no end.   He's done some incredible thing's with his book's.

For anyone that  has one of those "monkey mind's" that can't stop chattering, I would highly recommend Stillness Speak's, I use it myself as a sort of "cool-down" before I do a short eyes-closed meditation and it's always been a big help.

Re: Eckhart Tolle

Tolle is one of my favourites too. I think A New Earth was probably my favourite book of 2005 and I strongly recommend it to everyone in this forum.

Re: Eckhart Tolle

Yea Tolle's books are highly inspirational, and make me look at myself and the negative thought forms that I may be carring and "feeding" the pain bodies.

I have a load a audio files when he did a 5-day seminar in India called "Touching the Eternal".  If anyone is intrested I'd be happy to send it along.  If you have the time and know how Torrents work, download a tracker, I use Bit Lord.

and you can find a video, audio and an E-Book of "The Power of Now" here.

Re: Eckhart Tolle

Tolle's views on the ego are very similar to Don Juans's in the Castanadea books. He talks about *self-importance*. and how we are lucky to have what he calls *petty tyrants* in our lives to teach us to let go of our self-importance.

Re: Eckhart Tolle

I'd like to also whole heartedly recommend Eckhart Tolle to everyone.  Probably some of the most transformational texts I've ever read.  Hearing him read it, via audio book, is even more engaging.  He was and still is a great catalyst for me and my spiritual brother.

Re: Eckhart Tolle

A friend of mine amazoned a copy of  "The Power of Now" to me as she realised I was going through a very rough patch.(All my fault)
The reading of this, amongst other things helped no end.
When I'm done with it, I'm going to read it again.
I have never done this with a book before [apart from the bible wink]

Re: Eckhart Tolle

^ Yeah that book is pretty much what started it all for me - it opened my eyes in a sense. A lot of so-called gurus are teaching essentially the same truth and you start to wonder if they've come up with their own ideas or are just parroting what others have said before, but I think Eckhart is genuine and I found the way he expresses his teaching particularly clear and enlightening. I still refer to the book sometimes if I need a reminder to live in the present.

Re: Eckhart Tolle

I just recieved an e- copy of Eckhart's book, thanks to khalil recomending it and after reading a bit about him on the web, i look forward to reading it myself.

Re: Eckhart Tolle

There is a forum for Tolle followers http://eckhart-tolle-forum.inner-growth.info/. I like Tolle's teachings and have expanded into the area of non-duality or Advaita, out of a intense desire to know the truth about the self. The paradox is that the self as they describe cannot be known by the mind as the mind is only an appearance  on the presence/awareness which is our true nature. The mistake of assuming an identity out of thought is the cause of all suffering. The now has no problems accepting itself.
