Re: What's the latest in Florida?
Hey all,
Glad you didn't get hit too hard by the hurricane Audenove. I love that imagery of you and your cat looking at each other like that.
Very cute. Sounds like your cat is a smart one!
This hurricane was definitely a strange one, that's for sure, taking forever to move, just sitting and churning over the state of Florida....churn.....churn.....churn......I heard on the news that now everybody is fighting their way back south again into the state. Glad it's not me. The situation was unreal on the turnpike and the 75 when we were trying to get out. I vowed I wouldn't go back and do it again in reverse. The heat was unbearable. To top it off, I had a little "situation" going on with my car. It kept trying to overheat, so the temp gauge would crawl up to 3/4 before I'd pull off the road. Either it was the fan, or, the fan was working but it just couldn't keep up with the heat. It looked like a hopeless situation. We'd only gone 40 miles when this happened, and we had just run into the traffic crunch, so we had miles and miles to go, hours and hours. How was my car supposed to get through that when it keeps overheating??? My car was handicapped basically, and we had no choice but to somehow keep going forward. There was no turning back. What I ended up having to do was crank up my heater, pulling heat from the engine, and then switch it into Neutral every time we were idling. Between Neutral, and the blasting heat, it allowed the car to go hours more at a time before getting too hot than it would have otherwise. Problem was, I was sitting directly in the sun, and it was HOT. And now I had to have the heat blasting at full strength in the car. If I didn't, we couldn't have gone anywhere. It was nuts. I have never sweat so much in my life. Burned my right foot from the heater too. I literally drank over three 33 ounce bottles of Fiji water and a 24 oz. Ice tea, so, over 110 ounces of liquid, and didn't have to pee at all, not once, in over 12 hours, that's how much I sweat. That's insanity. I made a deal with my car though. I told it that if it hung in there, I would too.
And it did, it hung in there.
After 10 - 12 hours of people sitting in barely moving traffic people were getting crazy, acting like animals. It got to the point where people didn't even want anybody switching over into their lane. Keep in mind it's a 2 lane (outdated) highway. Naturally people are going to switch lanes according to what's moving. After 12 hours, people were just absolutely FRAZZLED. I tried to switch lanes at one point and some guy hung out of his car cussing me up and down and inside out, every name in the book, screaming in a hoarse voice, just going beserk. Total insanity by the end. It was a maddening situation. People didn't view the other cars as people in the same boat as them....they were just objects that were one more obstacle between them and freedom and the open road. It was understandable. I didn't get mad at crazy guy, I just tuned it out.
It was a little like the Rockford Files, like palulukon mentioned. Luckily we were informed via radio of an alternate highway called the 441 which runs parallel to the 75 starting in Orlando. Seems like NOBODY knew about this, as hardly anybody was using it. It was our Godsend. Newly paved, speeds of up to 60, no interference or impediements. It got us out of the state.
Have to add that I did hear that August 2004 was a record month for storms forming. They said that it was the most number of storms in one month since they first began keeping track of things something like 150 years ago. At one point if you looked at the globe in August, there were 3 tropical storms, 2 hurricanes and a typhoon all happening at the same time. And we have yet another hurricane, Ivan, whipping up in the Caribbean. I do wonder if this has something to do with global warming, when you factor in the Southwest's heat wave and worst drought in 500 years. Something may be amiss.
