I saw that too, but thought I might be reading too much into it (just because of the voice thing). It's hard to tell exactly what the man looks like because of the shaggy mane and beard, but there is something vaguely Bush-esque about him.
Did you know that his father was a Colonel who had a brief tryst with his mother-- and then disappeared? The Manson name came from a stepfather his mother married when he was small. Now, why would a "high-ranking" military man have a tryst with someone who was apparently quite low in status? Back then, she would have been the equivalent of trailer park trash.
It's interesting that you were perceptive enough to feel something was wrong with that story, even as young as you were. You were ahead of most of the adults watching that same news coverage.
I went on to watch a 1973 documentary that showed interviews with the Family (which was, incidentally, banned in several countries upon its release). It's just so obvious that he was part of something much larger. I wonder if the experiment "failed," or if it achieved its objective?
