Topic: Cloned meat for human food...

Done a search on this subject on the forums, and didn't come up with anything.

Well apparently cloned cattle etc, has tentatively been given the "okay" by the US to be used as food for human consumption.  Interestingly as far as I can tell, once the food is on the shelves, it doesn't have to be labeled as cloned meat - and will essentially be indistinguishable from normal meat.

!There are so many implications to this it is unreal.  But the main question on my mind is "why?"  I don't see any benefit in using cloned animals as food.  They don't grow faster, they still have to be carried to full term by a female, I don’t know if there are actually and differences.  Are these animals going to be altered in someway or another?  Supposedly there is no health risk in eating the meat - I find that hard to believe.  And even if it is true - then why not label the meat as cloned?

All very strange.  I admit I haven't been following much news for months - so didn't even have a clue that cloned meat was even a consideration.

I wonder what the EU's take will be on cloned meat?  No doubt they will also "okay" it.

Re: Cloned meat for human food...

It's just fishy -- no GMO pun intended --

Where's the economic gain in cloned meat? Old- fashioned reproduction has to be more cost-effective.

And no labeling? Now that in the EU you can't call a grana cheese parmesan unless it's from Parma?

No logic, for good or evil, yet discernable in this. Awaiting further data.

Re: Cloned meat for human food...

Well as you said it certainly doesn't appear that there would be an economic gain to it.  Unless ultimately they litteraly want to put these animals on a production line (though it's not far from that now).

Oh - and I did mean to state in my first post that it's the US that has given the go-ahead for this...

Re: Cloned meat for human food...

I was going to post this also! Saw it in the newspaper and I was like, what the hell? Doesn't make sense. Like zejith, awaiting further data.

Also, I remember reading in Popular Science magazine that scientists will be "growing" meat straight out of a petri dish, no breeding, growing and then killing of the animal. Obviously not in the immediate future, but it's crazy the things they come up with.

Re: Cloned meat for human food...

The attempt is probably drip feeding of cloning on the population so we become more numb and accepting of it and even for many eating cloned meat without even realizing it or caring.
For the more aware It would only add to the sales of organic natural meat who will label their products as "Uncloned meat"

Its not like we are fractions of the whole but rather versions of the whole.

Re: Cloned meat for human food...

I'm stymied as to why this would be economically viable as well.  Even a friend of mine who's not into 'fringe" things expressed concern to me about cloned meat.  He wonders what will be the eventual and unseen repercussions, and I have to agree.

Thank goodness I rarely eat meat, and none of it pork or beef.  I'll bet they'll be cloning chickens and seafood soon, though.

Re: Cloned meat for human food...

I had a really, really bad thought. What kind of animal tissue grows fastest of all? yikes

Moose Antlers tongue

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moose
“The male moose will drop its antlers after mating season in order to conserve energy for the
winter season. It will then regrow them in the spring. The antlers take about three to five months
to grow. This makes their antlers one of the fastest growing organs in the world. The antlers
initially have a layer of skin, which will shed off once fully grown."

Should have been more direct. Cancers. sad Feed it hydrolyzed protein, glucose, some lipids and vitamins. No need to worry about longevity or reproductive health. Slice off chunks and let it regrow. Perfectly fits the definition of "cloned meat". I really hope I'm wrong. Tumorburgers, anyone? yikes

Re: Cloned meat for human food...

Pictus, you're so funny.  I always read your posts.

One of the reasons I've never eaten western soy is that I heard it had been modified since the 1950's.  Many years after, I read that it was modified with human genes.  I don't remember the logic given for this, just that it was added along with fish genes and some other stuff. hmm  I think the fish gene was to repel mold, but can't say for sure it was so long ago.  Soy pretty much went underground 'til the 90's when it started being ranted and raved about as the perfect protein and such, and now it's in everything from baby formula to cooking oil. Now, to the point of this ramble, in the 70's there was a movie about a futuristic society that was issued these green tablets (the food of the future) by the gov.  The name of the movie was Soylent Green.  The tablets turn out to be, gulp, uh...well, PEOPLE!!!! yikes  The movie kinda fell of the edge of the earth and years later they're pushing soy on us complete with that human gene(s)...double gulp.  Now, why wouldn't the tablets be called Soilent, the correct pronounciation of the word, but instead it's "soy"...unless the producers M...triple gulp..."GM" knew more than they were telling. wink
