Topic: My Mercury Retrograde Experiences - List Yours Too
Like Lyra mentioned in the Jupiter retrograde thread, I never used to "believe" in Mercury retrograde. Even though I'm an astrologer type, I try to keep an open mind about the different planetary trends and sense the energies for myself to see if they truly have an impact that is noticeable. I don't automatically place my faith in the work of past astrologers; I prefer to test things out for myself through intensive study, journalling, etc.
Years before I became heavily involved with astrology, I'd heard about Mercury retrograde and wondered what it was. Then I picked up my first layman's guide to planetary cycles - the yearly Llewellyn daily planet guide - and started tracking the moon phases and Mercury retrogrades for myself. I noticed amazing synchronicities as I looked back in old journals and took note of what was going on.
Mercury retrograde times are weird. I still don't know WHY they should affect us, but they do. Mercury doesn't actually move backwards in the sky. It's just that short-term differences in orbital speed (Earth vs. Mercury's) make it APPEAR from our vantage point that Mercury is moving backwards. This happens about three times a year for about three and a half weeks at a time.
And for some reason, this gravitational (or perceptual) bizarreness has a huge effect on things here.
You'll notice during Mercury retrograde that there will be a bunch of plane crashes. This one is trackable, like clockwork. While there will still be occasional plane crashes that DON'T happen during Mercury retrograde (like that weird one recently where a Yankees player crashed a small plane into a building in New York City,) during Mercury retrograde there tend to be "pile-ups" of transportation-related tragedies or problems. So there was that plane crash in Nigeria right after Mercury went into retrograde, and then shortly after that a plane clipped the wings of another plane while circling the runway at Newark airport. Maybe there have been more, but those are the ones I paid attention to recently. But there will usually be clusters of plane problems. Sometimes train problems, too, like commuter trains getting derailed.
If you look over an entire year and jot down the times when you notice more road repairs being done , with the related traffic backups and delays, Mercury retrograde times always have more of these things going on. Sure enough, bridge work started here locally right after retrograde began, and another major highway I travel daily is having all manner of weirdness - lane shut downs, entire highway shutdowns, etc. Nothing EVER happens around here with traffic because we're in a rural area, yet when something DOES it's always during retrograde.
Other weird events also tend to cluster during these times. I never asked the engineers at Princeton University's Engineering Anomalies lab about this, they're the guys who monitor those random number generator devices that behave in anomalous ways around times when BIG STUFF is happening that rocks global consciousness (Princess Diana's death, 9/11, etc.)....but I wonder if the random number generators have been noticed to behave oddly during Mercury retrograde periods. It wouldn't surprise me if they did. (I visited their lab many years ago - it was cool.)
Because if you were to try to sum up in once brief description what the heck is happening during retrogrades, I'd have to say that ANOMALOUS STUFF OCCURS. Things that are unusual, that usually create delays, backups, complications, or detours. And it's noticeable everywhere, if you are attuned to anomalous stuff in your life. If you're not good with recognizing subtle patterns of weirdness, you might not observe these goings on, but if you keep your eyes and mind open, you'll almost always see a cluster of weird or unusual things going on in your own life and your own neighborhood during retrograde.
Here are my Mercury retrograde observations so far, things that have impacted me or people in my immediate sphere of influence:
1) Some poor animal got trapped down the heating duct in my honey's new barn office; we can't get him out, even with drills and tin clips and everything. Dont' know if it's a squirrel or a bird or a bat. Animals showing up or getting stuck in weird places is a classic retrograde thing.
2) A friend lost his keys and couldn't find them or the spare on a very busy day when he needed to use his truck right away. Misplacing small items is classic retrograde in action.
3) I temporarily lost MY keys last night when I needed to head out, and I never lose my keys; in fact, I'd been thinking about retrograde and how I needed to make sure I was especially careful NOT to place my keys any place weird. It's funny, I was in those moments of not being able to find my car keys, and I started to get frustrated, and then I said to myself, "Poop! It's Mercury retrograde!" and then I composed myself and said, "Damned retrograde isn't going to get me! I'm shifting my consciousness OUT of being affected by it!" And I immediately found my keys, hiding in plain sight. Weird!
4) I've gotten lost twice while driving around places and roads I regularly travel. Had one of those things where it's dark out and suddenly the roads seem completely unfamiliar to you and you lose all sense of spatial orientation; another time I just plain got lost. Differences in the Earth's magnetic field will often cause machinery to malfunction, and it seems to mess with people's natural navigational sense, too. The only times I end up having to turn around and backtrack because I've driven somewhere I didn't mean to go are during retrograde periods, no matter how much I try to avoid being affected!
5) Email interference - an editor contacted me for a rates quote, I sent one back to her. I didn't hear back for a day and something told me that I'd better get in touch with her to make sure she'd received it. She had received it and had sent me an email back, which my server at GoDaddy just magically - ATE. Her second email back to me just never showed up here. Communications snafus and midirections - more classic retrograde stuff. And often it will be IMPORTANT communications. Inevitably, it's communications that involve major stuff like money and deal-making or employment offers that get "eaten" or disappear into the void during retrograde. While, ironically, every freakin' stupid chain letter that your friends of friends of friends have decided to forward to everybody on their list arrives in your "in" box like clockwork. ![]()
If any other forum members are noticing anomalous stuff going on in your lives, feel free to share your retrograde adventures here. As far as I've been able to map out over the years, these anomalies will usually involve events falling into these categories:
1) Physical klutziness or clumsiness, leading to cuts or accidents or damage if you're not careful;
2) Weird events involving animals showing up in bizarre situations or weird places;
3) Communications problems - voice mail, phone calls, email, letters/bills/etc.
4) Missed connections - more people cancelling appointments or not showing up for appointments than usual; or you just can't get together with someone because something comes up;
5) Road problems - commuter delays that are insanely long; road work that suddenly is happening; getting disoriented, lost or distracted while on the road;
6) Losing or misplacing familiar items like cell phones, keys, purse, wallet, etc.
7) Mechanical malfunctions - computer viruses set in, printer suddenly doesn't work, cell phone battery goes dead, car doesn't start.
8) Celebrity deaths - there are usually a cluster of these, too. Sometimes that famous 80 or 90 year old who seems to have been hanging on forever chooses to exit during retrograde; but there will usually be several significant famous folks checking out during retrograde times.
This particular retrograde period started October 28th in the wee hours of the morning and ends on Friday, November 17th at 7:25 pm Eastern Time.
