Bowling for Columbine did it to the gun culture.

Super Size Me did it to fast food.

Now The God Who Wasn't There does it to religion.

Holding modern Christianity up to a bright spotlight, this bold and often hilarious new film asks the questions few dare to ask.

Your guide through the world of Christendom is former fundamentalist Brian Flemming, joined by such luminaries as Jesus Seminar fellow Robert M. Price, professor Richard Dawkins, author Sam Harris and historian Richard Carrier.

See the movie the Los Angeles Times calls "provocative - to put it mildly."

Hold on to your faith. It's in for a bumpy ride.

Very informative and entertaining.  Unless you're really into the Christian thing and then it will probably suck, but I dare you to watch it anyway.

Interesting.   !

I just spent four months temping for a Baptist Church.  wink  It was an informative, and um, interesting experience.  big_smile   Actually, not as bad as many would imagine.  But "interesting" nonetheless.  I don't know.  There's so much to stay about those who hardcore follow one of the mainstream Christian denominations.  You see your genuine people and you see the hypocrites.  The biggest thing I came away with though out of everything else was the $$$$$$$$$$$ aspect of it all.   I had no IDEA how $$$ oriented churches are.  It was quite eye opening.  They are first and foremost, a business.  It's business and $$$ first, "religion" and "spirituality" a distant second...sometimes third, fourth or even fifth.  The priorities are often not where they should be for what they're supposed to be about.

Other tidbits from my 4 months:

- The books on the shelves in the church office called "How to be a Contagious Christian."  It's a how-to manual for how to work Jesus and your church into pretty much any conversation, and how to actively "work" people to recruit them.   "Work" my own word choice.

- The book on the shelf that was about something Christian/Baptist....and featured an image of "God" on the cover....as a bearded man in long robes, with a staff.   !!

- Again, the main focus on $$$$ money $$$$ more than anything else;

- People who were supposed to be Christian, but who acted anything but.  The Pastor who had a mean streak and a mood swingy dark side, prone to blasphemizing (!!)  Yes, saying "Goddamit!!!" and "JESUS CHRIST!"   Who knew!   tongue

I could go on....

Hey Soloflecks, thanks for this link.  Cool stuff; I think it's great an actual mainstream movie is finally being put out on this subject!

Re: movies

And don't miss the extras after the end of it like I did!  There's another hour of interviews and stuff!

Lyra, my mother is a hardcore Southern Baptist and a loyal 700 Club member.  We've had big problems over religion.  She told me around Christmas that if my son would accept Christ he would be a millionaire in x years (I forget how many, heh.)  I have read The Bible and studied it intensively, so I know that isn't in there.  The message is that your needs will be fulfilled not that you will be enriched with $.  Anyway, I was visiting her recently and she told me she dedicated me to God when was born, and she said "You'll see; he'll come for you one day."  YIKES!  I wasn't feeling well so instead of holding my tongue I told her she didn't have the right to do that and that I rescind her offer on my behalf.  I'm not sure but I may have also said I would never worship that bloody sob who condones human sacrifice and blood rituals.  She played it down at the time and we went on to our lunch and other things, and I thought everything had blown over.  Then last weekend I get this letter from her:

When I told you not to see me until you wanted a mother I was serious because I realized you were a very unhappy person and only god could help you. One second before calling you that day I didn't know I was going to do it but the Lord said, "Call and invite them." I don't know why but He know what He is doing so I called.

I am in the name of Jesus a born again Christian. In as much as I am a good friend of the 700 club and all Christians. The Bible says we must love and forgive all though we can't always love what some people do. I have no trouble loving all in god and it is only by His grace that we live and breathe. So I will continue to pray for all of you. The joy of the Lord is my strength and I have it all the time and there is nothing you can do that will take that though you have tried most of your life.

I even forgive you for keeping my divided plate that I sent the pecan pie on, and that's okay. Stay at home and I won't have to ask you to leave because of your bad mouth. I will always love you and Jesus does too.

I felt really bad about what I'd said (even though it was correct from my point of view).  Can you see the fear in her letter?  This is "joy of the Lord"?  Even when I'm nice about it, we cannot discuss it at all or she gets angry and tells me to leave.  If I'm reading her letter correctly she doesn't want me to come back now until I'm ready to accept her message?

Hi Solo,

I understand your situation.  My father is a minister and although we do not get on shouting arguments we disagree a lot when talking over the phone.  I finally realized that I am not going to change and he is not going to change.  When we talk on the phone I listen to what he saids out of respect and because he is very ill and probably don't need the agravation.  If I visit him (which is not very often, we are separated by 2000 miles) and he decides to preach to me I will listen and respect him in his house.  If he visits me I control the agenda and expect him to respect my wishes in my place.  So far it works fine although we do not visit each other very often.  He also prays for me all time and I don't mind.  I welcome some of that good energy (some of it is due to his love for me and some of it is due to his arrogance to think that he is right and I am wrong).

It sounds like I am repeating myself but here we go anyway, I respect him and have no difficulty in saying what is in my mind but lately I have started to listen more and allow him to preach........He does not have much time left in this planet.  I got nothing to gain by continuously contradicting him.  He will never change and so won't I.  I hope this help.

Regards,

Lee

YOU're burning Precious Life Force in an argument that 'never' ends.......

If I'm reading her letter correctly she doesn't want me to come back now until I'm ready to accept her message?

Through one window, this is blatant manipulation - Through another window, it might be an intuition from YOUR HS regarding :

Time for Change

Do YOU continue to Allow this manipulation

OR

Do YOU use this Opportunity to Break Free.......

Re: movies

SiriArc, that is somewhat the quandry I'm in over this.  I do see it as manipulation, and there were many other instances of manipulation not related to religion.  Even so, it isn't her fault if she believes lies (even her own) as that is the problem with all of humanity.  It's very tempting to let things lie as they are, because I'm very uncomfortable around her and walking on eggshells all the time.  This happened before and we were estranged for 6 years.  But that seems like running away which is what I've done in these situations all my life.  Relationships, family, and running away emotionally are areas I'm here to work on, so I must deal with this situation.  That's the message I'm getting from my HS intuitively.

Thank all of you so much for your comments.

Re: movies

An interesting new documentary called "Who Killed the Electric Car":

http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809353030/trailer

exposing how Big Oil "discouraged" the idea of the electric car taking off because it wouldn't make them money.

I'm glad to see exposes like this happening, where people are directly challenging the Powers That Be, directly implicating Bush, Condi, (you see their pics in the trailer) General Motors and all the rest.  That didn't used to happen before.

But the cynical side of me can't help but think that maybe these exposes are coming out because it no longer matters anymore anyway, and we're past the point of no return...

Re: movies

Jeez,  I had been watching "The Secret" (thank you Ayahuasca for the link) and planned on watching the end last night, but now the link is closed.  I've checked back several times, but same message appears saying it's not available.  If anyone finds it again, please post the link, it was a wonderful movie, and I'd love to see the end, heck, I'd love to watch the entire movie over and over.

Re: movies

can someone at least tell me if they brought any new information out in the second half (actually, more than half, I only watched the first half hour or so), or is it simply further elaboration on the same basic idea?

Re: movies

I don't know if it was new information necessarily, but the feeling that I got at least, and I think others had it as well, was that after the first hour it was like a snowball rolling down a mountain....the good vibes picked up speed until by the end, you feel so good and positive and uplifted that you don't want the video to end!  You feel like you watch another couple of hours of it, and you get up from it feeling lighter, and better.  Just really positive.  It's well worth watching the second half/ending, because that's the best part for some reason.

Re: movies

We watched the movie "the Secret" a couple of nights ago and as Lyra mentioned above;

"You feel like you watch another couple of hours of it, and you get up from it feeling lighter, and better.  Just really positive.  It's well worth watching the second half/ending, because that's the best part for some reason."

A friend of mine, Muriel and I are starting a meditation group in August and we are going to use this movie as an introduction in our first session...I will let you know what the feeling is when we present it newbies...I feel it will put them in the right space to lead up to sound meditation processes.

Now all we have to do is put this movie into practice and help others turn their thoughts into positive thinking.
