Bowling for Columbine did it to the gun culture.
Super Size Me did it to fast food.
Now The God Who Wasn't There does it to religion.
Holding modern Christianity up to a bright spotlight, this bold and often hilarious new film asks the questions few dare to ask.
Your guide through the world of Christendom is former fundamentalist Brian Flemming, joined by such luminaries as Jesus Seminar fellow Robert M. Price, professor Richard Dawkins, author Sam Harris and historian Richard Carrier.
See the movie the Los Angeles Times calls "provocative - to put it mildly."
Hold on to your faith. It's in for a bumpy ride.
Very informative and entertaining. Unless you're really into the Christian thing and then it will probably suck, but I dare you to watch it anyway.
Interesting. !
I just spent four months temping for a Baptist Church.
It was an informative, and um, interesting experience.
Actually, not as bad as many would imagine. But "interesting" nonetheless. I don't know. There's so much to stay about those who hardcore follow one of the mainstream Christian denominations. You see your genuine people and you see the hypocrites. The biggest thing I came away with though out of everything else was the $$$$$$$$$$$ aspect of it all. I had no IDEA how $$$ oriented churches are. It was quite eye opening. They are first and foremost, a business. It's business and $$$ first, "religion" and "spirituality" a distant second...sometimes third, fourth or even fifth. The priorities are often not where they should be for what they're supposed to be about.
Other tidbits from my 4 months:
- The books on the shelves in the church office called "How to be a Contagious Christian." It's a how-to manual for how to work Jesus and your church into pretty much any conversation, and how to actively "work" people to recruit them. "Work" my own word choice.
- The book on the shelf that was about something Christian/Baptist....and featured an image of "God" on the cover....as a bearded man in long robes, with a staff. !!
- Again, the main focus on $$$$ money $$$$ more than anything else;
- People who were supposed to be Christian, but who acted anything but. The Pastor who had a mean streak and a mood swingy dark side, prone to blasphemizing (!!) Yes, saying "Goddamit!!!" and "JESUS CHRIST!" Who knew!
I could go on....
