Re: What the *@#! is going on in Oregon?!?
Hi lyra,
My half joking theory I came to while visiting is that everyone in Portland is just a little bit insane but doesn't know it. People have this glassy eyed kind of look. It feels like you're in a David Lynch movie or Dark City or something -- there's something you can't quite put your finger on. If you stay there too long maybe it becomes more like the movie Memento... "I know there something really important that I can't remember, what is it, what is it? *looks at tatoo* oh yeah -- never move to Seattle!" Whew, I almost forgot!

Your words reminded me of the Chuck Palahniuk book I stumbled across the other night at Barnes and Noble: "Fugitives and Refugees: A Walk in Portland." Chuck is from Portland, and wrote a book on all the best things to do and see there in Portland. The title comes from a woman he talked to who said that everybody in Portland is either a fugitive or a refugee. I seriously almost fell over and squealed out loud when I read that in the store...it's so true!!! My brother was a fugitive and refugee when he fled to Portland. I wasn't running from the law like he was, so I was just a refugee I guess.
So I think it's safe to say that everybody in Portland besides the white collar corporate types are fugitives and refugees. So so true.

Don't get me wrong, I really like it there and am in fact moving there pretty soon.
Well, best of luck to you. I wish I could visit again, I truly do. It was the weirdest damn place I'd ever been, and if I had instant teleportation abilities, I'd be there again in a second to visit. I'd love to poke around that city some more, I would never get tired of it. I couldn't live there full time, but it's a trippy place to pass through on your way to other places in life. (although in a way, I already am still there, in the parallel timeline where I took my $3,300 and plunked it down on an apartment downtown and my new life there, instead of taking that money and getting in my car and heading to Florida....parallel timelines, gotta love 'em!)
