OK, Lyra, lets you and I really put our money where our mouths are.  Start your own business.  I've got mine started already (needs lots of work which I have been neglecting).  There are independent "virtual office assistants" already out there, which sounds like something you might like to do.  Or there are lots of other things which you might like doing.  I can send you the sites of some virtual assistants and help you start networking, if you want.  You could write an ebook; you could do what ever you want.  Forget temping!  Forget submitting to bosses!  Service = yes.  Submission = no.  Forge a new path!  What do you say Lyra? Awesome!   Send me the sites!   I need to get a new means of earning a living, but I'm just at a complete loss of what to do other than traditional jobs. I've made money on the side through my creative pursuits -   for instance, I used to make jewlery and made a nice bit of side money a few years back doing that for a period of time, but I never pursued it because I ran out of steam with it.  But whatever you can forward, I'm open!  smile

Ok, let me dig them up and email them to you.  How about a challenge too?  Totally debt free and self sufficient by the end of the year?  Ready, set, go!

Sounds cool to me.  smile  If you click on my name you'll see my email address where you can send them to.  Thanks.....

EDIT:  I wanted to add that I don't actually have any debt - no credit cards, no car payments, mortgage payments, nobody hunting me down, no backlogged bills and expenses that I can't pay or which are on the backburner-  but being self sufficient would be nice.  wink

Re: Lyra's New Business :)

Z,
I could, but why don't you be more creative and focus on what YOU would enjoy!  Turn that into a business.  You could do an ezine, find a way to market your comics, music, design websites.  You could also add various links to your website that could help earn you money.  You could even sell the Brainwave Generator on your site.

Edit: 2004, I like a challenge.

Re: Lyra's New Business :)

I was thinking about setting up my own business a few years ago. Freelance software development, website design, etc. I need to look into this soon, actually.

Hi all,

I've been having this pressing urge to go the route that Neo just mentioned for the past few months now, that whole setting up my own business thing, making my own money and living.  "The itch" began probably last year, but over the past few months it's bearing down on me to the point where I'm tearing my hair out.  I'm finding that I have pretty much no tolerance anymore for "the system" and the normal job route.  That's why temping actually suits me to a degree because even though I'm working at regular companies that are all mainstream, temping itself isn't mainstream.  You bounce around to different places.  A week here, a week there, then a week off, then 3 days here, 1 day there, 3 months here, 2 weeks there.....bounce bounce bounce.  Variety and something new, the best that one could hope for while still working "in the system."  You just have to make sure your temp company is good and that they are always lining up work for you.  Not all temp companies are busy and have work.  I've signed on with 4 agencies here where we just moved to.............and only 1 out of the 4 has actually pulled through for me.  There's a second one that's trying really hard and have sent me on 2 interviews but the companies or jobs were not to my liking.

I've been really going around and around about this whole thing lately, and I'm wondering what thoughts others here have on the matter.  Anybody going through this too, anybody having these thoughts besides me, freeme, Neomatrix and Zonabi?   Has anybody here actually done it and been successful?   Some thoughts that I've had go back to the idea of polarization.   Relocating where we live to be more in tune with our frequencies, changing jobs because we no longer have tolerance for something negative..........................and maybe even trying to find a way out of the traditional work system altogether, which is the direction I'm looking in.

Things I realized I no longer have any tolerance for and refuse to do:

- I will not take a job under the pretense that I'm going to stay there forever or that it's my career.   Hell no.  I can't pretend.   But most employers want to hear that.  It's so weird.  Yeah, like I'm going to do this for the next 15 years.  uh huh.

- Exerting mental and personal energy into a job that's b.s. to begin with and TOTALLY not worth it, so that I have nothing left in me by the time I get home.   A job where I'm expected to take it seriously, take my work home with me, stay late, come in on weekends, give it my all, strive for the top, seek advancement and all that game playing illusory nonsense.   I can't / won't do this anymore because I see how b.s. most jobs and companies and industries are.   Most industries in this country it seems are based on "illusory" concepts with these manufactured positions that really do nothing but push paper.   Take a look around at many companies and see which ones are actually *genuinely producing something of value*, versus ones that are based on illusory concepts.  Any company that revolves around money basically - stocks & financial investments, mortgages, debt management & consolidation, bankruptcy, loans....just nonsense, and all the jobs they invent for people to do in these illusory paper pushing industries are nonsense as well. I know, I've done those nonsense jobs!   Law firms are another HUGE biggie.  Most lawsuits are stupid or based on illusory ideals.   Homeowners association/Property Management!!   MAJOR ILLUSORY CONCEPT.

The trick is to imagine that we're in apocolyptic times, civilization has crumbled, we have no electricity and computers.   Now looking around at all the companies out there and all the jobs...........which ones are immediately swept into the gutter because they're no longer relevant or feasable?  Which ones are still standing because they provide actual useful services?   There goes about 75% of the industries in this country, buh bye, swept aside!

I used to be content to hold down a mindless office "tick tock" day job and to some degree I still can but the ability is fading fast!   smile   I keep joking that "I'm in a crisis!"   Anybody else having a tick tock crisis out there???

OK, great, this is where I can actually help people here!! It's late right now here in the UK, I just got home, and I confess I'm a little drunk. I'll post a lot more on this subject either after or during the weekend.

I've been learning all about making money on the internet for the last 5 years, although only really started to put it into practice this last year or so. I've probably spent over $2000 on ebooks and courses and a shit load of different things on web design, search engine optimization, internet marketing etc etc etc.

And I'm not talking about trying to make money with crappy business opportunities/mlm and all that bullshit. I mean actually making money from doing or writing about things you're actually interested in.

Anyway, I'm not trying to blow my own trumpet here. But I really do have a ton of knowledge on this subject and I'm willing to share it with anyone here that's interested! I also have my own webserver, so I can set anyone up with their own domain and website for an extremely low cost.

Anyway, I'll post more later.

I'd be very interested to hear what you have to say about this. As regards cost, how low we talking here? PM me smile

Re: Lyra's New Business :)

I have no wrath!!! tongue I just think of some MLM's as being a good transition towards a more network-oriented economy.  They'll probably become obsolete, but that's ok.  Networking is what is important.  I have knowledge of a wide variety of opportunities, affiliate programs, and how to spot scams.

Oops, sorry to anyone that might be making money that way, and is doing ok with it. It definitely is possible. But personally I've lost an absolute ton of money with various 'business opportunities' so I have a very low opinion of them. But I know there are plenty of people that are doing well with them. it just wasn't for me.

Re: Lyra's New Business :)

Hi Lyra, all...

It's kind of funny because was self-employed for the last 2 1/2 years and just accepted a job offer. I'll be employed again, lol...

Some things to consider with your own business according to my own experience:

* I had a very volatile income. A big chunk of money, then nothing for months, then a little bit of money followed by losing some just before another big one hits... It makes it hard to plan.
* I was missing co-workers around me.
* I did what liked to do and will still do that in my new job. That's the most important thing to me.

So, here come my rules:

#1: Work in a field that you really like and enjoy what you do for a living.
#2: Never base a decision on what you hate about your current job/business. A change should come only for the new good things. Therefore, it is much more important to have a clear picture of what you want to do, why you'll like it and why you'll be good at it.
#3: There's a common trap: illusions. I remember falling in love with all sorts of business models that were simply unrealistic because I had never tried working in this field and had no skills. I realized these were nice getaway dreams. So, it's important to already have some experience in what you're planning to do as a business. You could start a sideline first, then see if you really like it and if it earns a living.

Lyra, let's not make major decisions based on any apocalyptic prophecies. I've heard of people who quit their jobs and moved to woods years ago. By now they have finished up their canned food supplies that were thought for the hard times and start selling now their bags of 90% silver coins thought for bartering because they run out of money.

I agree with you on the phony business of many companies and their illusionary concepts. Does it change anything for us personally as long as we do what we really enjoy? I mean, the cleaning woman, the facility manager, the programmer, the EVP at JP Morgan - what does the company make a difference as long as they enjoy what they're doing?

By now it should be clear that I like to take the other side of the discussion, .)... Honestly, I'm kind of neutral towards employment vs. own business. Both have advantages and disadvantages. I'm just trying to evaluate it from all different angles.

All the best,
-digger

Re: Lyra's New Business :)

I have worked at home for quite some time now having the animal sanctuary.  However, it took capital to get this going…and I did that with making money house and office cleaning.  After I finished college I was looking at the vast array of possibilities and none were appealing.  I saw folks going to work for 40 hours or more a week, working for usually power hungry supers…and having precious little time to live their lives in an atmosphere of non servitude.  I had so many different jobs while in school and every one of them sucked because of management.  I decided I wanted to work for myself, that was the only viable solution.  So I started out with a lawn mowing business.  It was great, I was in Houston where the grass always grows.  When it rained I got to stay at home and the rain always assured me of plenty of money to make after.  One July a woman whose yard I mowed said would you consider cleaning my home?  It was hot, she was kind and I said sure, why not.  That started my cleaning career and also a way to move to Denver where the grass grows much less.  You work for lots of different folks so if one gets weird you just find another person to work for that is not weird.  I made a rule with all prospective clients…when I come to clean they cannot be home (don’t like anyone under foot) and if I had an animal emergency, was too sick to work, the streets were too icy or there was something I really wanted to do that I would work them in around that…that I would always come on a regular basis, do the very best cleaning they had seen, and if I needed to reschedule then they had to be flexible, but that I would not reschedule without good reason.  It was a wonderful job and I met wonderful folks.  Some of these people I am still friends with today.  I was my own boss and I made my own hours.   I did not work by the hour but by the job…on the days I was a steam roller I got out early…on the days I was a lingering presence I took longer…it was always my call.  The people really liked me and the only problem I had was them sneaking home early to offer me drinks at the end of the day and sit and visit.  When you put yourself in a position of service, like I never called myself the housekeeper or such nonsense, but always left a long note and signed it love, the maid…they let their hair down…you become someone safe to talk to.  When I finally had enough money to move here it was like leaving family, and some of them helped in the move.

Find something you either love doing, or love the freedom it provides you.  Once you make that decision then the opportunities open up.  The only initial requirement is making the decision to live outside the box.

It's all mind over matter. If you don't mind it doesn't matter...

Re: Lyra's New Business :)

I've been into creating possibilites in this area, as well. In general, I like the idea of using a cyber-approach to this, and it sounds like freeme knows something about that. Having done a search for "cyber assistants" and come up with many, it might be extra generous for you, freeme, to give an idea of which ones you think might help us in our various and far-flung endeavors.

Do you know how one might merge writing e-books with the cyber assistant idea?
Of late I feel gloriously free to be, ahem, an "idiot."

As far as the worldview that Lyra espouses, I would think, this website being a prime example, that there are ways to incorporate the "fringe topics" and worldviews into the e-books topic especially.

Others would take a different approach, but I think this is one of the exciting things about the internet and computers in general: you can do your own thing, develope your multidimensional business, and those who resonate will go there.

Yes, there are people who wasted their lives and money on survivalist supplies, and there are people who wasted them on fashion. But fashion hasn't gone out of business!

Perhaps the wiki will provide some clues?
