Topic: EMDR Therapy

Hello Everyone,

Next week I have an appointment for EMDR therapy, I am hoping to bring out and deal with some suppressed memories from my childhood. I understand this therapy is fairly new. I am hoping someone has had some experience with this and can give me some feedback.

Thanks,

Re: EMDR Therapy

I have.  If you have a good therapist, it should help resolve your trauma.  Be prepared for an intense experience though.  Your therapist should help you create a safe place in your mind which you can turn to if the feeling become too intense.  The most common device used is a light which you follow back and forth with your eyes while focusing on the trauma.  I had trouble with that though and used headphones which played tones in alternating ears instead.

The memory I used this therapy on was a dog attack from almost twenty years ago.  I did about three sessions with that memory.  Basically, you mentally go back to the experience while you are having your attention alternating between the left and right hemispheres.   You do this and experience all the emotions that you could not experience at the time because it was too overwhelming for your mind.  In one of the sessions I sat there just remembering the moment the dogs teeth were in my arm.  Absorbing, accepting that I could have been killed at that time.  So, you see, it can get intense.  However, you are in control.   You stop and take a break whenever the feelings become too much.  You can go back to your mental safe place.   During my last session with this after I had processed through the fear and pain, I found myself standing next to the dogs and forgiving them.  Since then, whenever I go to my safe place they are there guarding me.  Because of that, I wholeheartedly endorse EMDR.  Just be prepared for an intense experience.

Re: EMDR Therapy

Thank you for sharing your experience with EMDR therapy. Sounds like it was very positive and helpful to your situation. I expect good things to come from the treatment and it is reassuring to hear from someone who has gone through it with good results.

Re: EMDR Therapy

Anyone here used EFT? The manual is free download at eft.com. Used for post traumatic stress and negative emotional states, it has gained quite a following among therapists. I have used it to successfully neutralize extreme emotional upsets. It can also be used for various physical ailments as well.

(((((TOL))))),
How did it go?  I was thinking of you last week.

About EFT, I've been experimenting with that on my own a bit lately.  It does seem to have an immediate calming effect, but I haven't tried it on any serious traumatic memories.  I am guessing that EFT and EMDR would work very well together.  The interesting thing about both of them is that they are both forms of self-healing.  The therapist is mostly a facilitator and a guide in case the emotions become too intense.  Having a huge independent streak, that appeals to me.  big_smile

I have found the therapy to be  very interesting and useful to my situation. I was surprised at how many long term physical ailments are associated with the original trauma. I have not had a chance to check out EFT but it is on  my list of things to do. Thanks for the heads up.

Glad it went well.  Yes, my research indicates that it is common for traumas to become clustered together in the mind, so that remembering one trauma can lead to remembering and feeling all the other traumas that one has experienced, plus the associated symptoms.  That means also that healing one can help heal the others.  Take care.
