Topic: is this possible?

hey, this is kind of directed to montalk, but anyone feel free to answer or comment on the question.

is it possible to charge up a battery by using the power of sound waves, or vibrations thereof ?

the idea came to me as my co worker said "been on the damn phone so much today its going dead... better charge it here"

and i thought, wouldnt it be sweet if there was a mechanism in the phone that took the sound vibrations from your voice going into the cones (shaking them) and used that to give the battery charge? of course it would have to be amplified somehow ...

Re: is this possible?

Interesting idea...sound waves can be turned into electricity...that's how a microphone works - the question is whether it's strong enough to charge a battery. Normally the signal has to be majorly amplified before it registers on an output speaker, so by itself the energy from sound is pretty small.  That is UNLESS something exotic is used, say the sound inducing a resonant vibration in something like a crystal arrangement that taps into the so-called 'zero point energy' and builds up in oscillation...then you could get lots of energy out, definitely to charge a battery and then some. I think it was T. Henry Morray who invented plasma-filled vacuum tubes that resonated at a frequency in tune with the zero point energy, and he was able to pump out huge amounts of power with this device. So I think your idea is definitely in the right direction.

Re: is this possible?

so, tell me more about these crystals? i hear about people who use them, mostly for more meditative / protection purposes.

what kind of crystals are used for this kind of thing ? (and what kind would work for this sound vibration amplification) ?

thankz

Re: is this possible?

piezo-electric crystals generate enough current to drive ultrasound machines, add a proper step-up, step-down transformer and viola, a charged battery. Might have to talk all day.

Re: is this possible?

Like Krazor said, piezoelectric crystals would work --

Piezoelectric ceramic transformers are an exciting alternative to conventional wire-wound transformers which use electromagnetic coupling to increase voltage. A piezoelectric transformer generally consists of an input and an output resonator, which are acoustically coupled, but electrically insulated. When an electrical signal near the frequency of mechanical resonance is applied to the input section of the transformer, strong mechanical vibration occurs due to the piezoelectric converse effect. This vibration is then transferred to the output section, inducing a voltage on its electrodes due to the piezoelectric direct effect, with a consequent gain. This technology uses an advanced interdigitated electrode design, so that electrical connections are made at vibration nodes. This leads to a significant increase in reliability. The advantages of high voltage, ease of miniaturization, high frequency, low electrical noise, large degree of insulation, high efficiency, and low expense are important in many emerging microelectronic, photonic, sensor, and display applications.

This shows that piezeoelectric materials are capable of transferring, and thus generating, appliance level power. But as discussed on this thread, the problem is that ordinary sound by itself doesn't carry much energy. Here's a good page on waves and sound:

http://sol.sci.uop.edu/~jfalward/wavess … sound.html

There's a table there that shows if you capture one square meter's worth of sound at conversation level, you can generate no more than .000006 watts of electricity. But this becomes 100 watts with sound at the loudness of a jet engine.

But if you use sound as a trigger that opens a gateway to a different source of energy, then that's something else entirely. Tapping sound for energy is like tapping the energy in a switch-flip, but using sound to tap energy is like flipping the switch and turning on the mains electricity.

The crystals used for serious healing and meditation purposes tend to be Vogel Cut crystals, which are crystals cut in a taper with two pointed ends, one end being more blunt than the other. Somehow this is optimized for internal resonance and energy transfer. Read more about these here:
