A Personal Note from Richard Dolan

February 18, 2005

Anyone who checked my website during the last half of 2004 may have started to wonder what happened to me. Despite having a great deal on my mind, despite the momentous events in America and the world at the time, I wrote no articles. Honestly, I believe I was suffering from some sort of burnout. Not depression, just a feeling of trying to do too much in too little time.

Also, the fact is that during the past seven months I have been working fairly diligently on Volume Two of my study, UFOs and the National Security State. This will indeed take the story of the UFO phenomenon and coverup from the early 1970s to the present day. I am happy to say that research is going very well. I currently have more information organized and annotated than I did when I wrote Volume One. There is still some more work ahead, but I believe the book will be out in 2006.

Writing articles is something I genuinely love to do. But I am not a full-time writer on these matters, although I wish I could be. The fact is that I must support my family and I can only do this work when I find a way to squeeze it in. Horrible, but true. (None too subtle hint for any would-be sugar daddies).

Especially within the UFO field, and especially if you have a political-conspiratorial angle of approach to the problem, as I do, an apparent disappearance can be cause for concern. And there were a few of you who wrote to me with such concerns – for those whom I may not have answered, let me just say ‘thank you.’ One thing about this field that I will always appreciate is the large number of genuinely kind and insightful people who come to it. Far from being ‘looney’ or some such thing, I have found that people interested in this topic tend to be more perceptive and analytical, and concerned about this world, than most people.

Today, I wrote the first half of a two part article. It’s about 3,000 words, and I am certain the second part will be at least as long. Yes, I do intend to write articles occasionally – but I really need to do this ‘as the spirit moves me,’ and not on a regular basis, as I had hoped to do last year. This piece is entitled "UFO Secrecy and the Death of the American Republic." I have a lot of new things to say, matters that I believe are of grave importance.

Expect Part One to be published here on Monday, February 21.

My best regards,

Rich Dolan

I enjoy Rich Dolan's writing.  His Volume I of UFO's and the National Security State was monumental.  He's been on numerous TV specials on Sci-Fi channel, and has been published in UFO Magazine numerous times.  He's one of the view researchers who has followed the research where it led -- which includes political conspiracy.

However, over the past year I have been checking Rich's website for updates and news on his progress.  Especially so, since John Mack died, I've been thinking about Dolan and the importance of his work.

His first book got through the grips of publishing house perils, with the help of Hampton Roads (after a bout with another firm I can't remember).  But since his first volume, I've seen this particular publishing house decline in its level of discernment yet prosper in its wealth, scope and scale of business.  It makes me wonder who's paying the bills, and who's deciding what gets published.  I also know that the (at least at one time), the lead publisher of the firm was "dating" the author of  Talking to Extraterrestrials, Lisette Larkins.  I heard Lisette speak once in 2003.  She's certainly in line with the Stephen Greer take on the ET encounter thesis -- aliens are indefinitely benign.

Anyway, why I'm sharing is because now that Rich Dolan is more or less crying out (reading between the lines) in his post, I'm moved to try and help him out.  Not sure what I'm going to do yet, maybe just help him with a better website or something, but also maybe starting a campaign to raise some funds to support his research.  What do you think?  Any suggestions?

Re: UFO's and the National Security State

I just got UFOs and The National Security State a week or two ago and plan to start reading it soon.  I was looking at different UFO and Paranormal lists on Amazon and this one book keeps coming up in practically every single list.  Now that I've got a copy in hand I've read a few pages and I'm seeing that this is apparently a definitive piece of research on the subject.  I'm looking forward to going through it.

If the spirit moves you to help further the cause, I'm proud to see you doing it in whatever way you can, whether it be website work or anything else.  I somehow doubt that getting financial help is going to be easy, but perhaps you can leverage your web skills to help him get a better site, increase traffic, and get the word out.  Marketing would certainly be a help.

I may be able to offer some unique help in the near future as well.  Will know more in the coming weeks.

Re: UFO's and the National Security State

Dolan has just published another article entitled UFO Secrecy and the Death of the American Republic.

This first part which has been published is notable for its lack of discussion of UFOs and its pure "summing up" of what's been happening in America for the past few years.  Only at the very end does Mr. Dolan even mention UFOs, and that's as a reference to the forthcoming Part 2 of the article.

Re: UFO's and the National Security State

Before I even read that you wanted to help him in some way, maybe by cleaning up or making a new site for him I looked at his page and thought that it would be great if someone just made it look nice, made it look professional and easy to use, that would also make him lok more "official" and taken more seriously.  Do it.  It's a great idea.

Re: UFO's and the National Security State

I was thinking exactly the same thing -- Dolan sure could use a website overhaul. I mean, quality material deserves quality presentation. Especially with his second book coming out soon. That's something to consider...

Re: UFO's and the National Security State

Richard Dolan has received some very good media attention lately.  On March 3, he was on Coast to Coast for an interview with George Noory.  On March 8, he was a featured person on the History Channel's "The Gray's Agenda" show.

Below I have posted links to two excellent articles that he recently posted on his site:

Greetings,

Last month, while I was at the Canadian National Archives, in Ottawa, Ontario, I found an interesting letter from the recently deceased UFO debunker, Philip J. Klass. This letter was apparently previously unknown. I suspect that it would be of interest to some people in the UFO field, and I put it on my website last week.

My apologies if this note has reached you by mistake. If so, please let me know and I will remove you from this list.

Please note the last two lines:

I just sent him an email with encouragement.

Volume Two "Progress Report."

Note to visitors of my site:

As many of you have noted, I have not been doing very much to update this website in quite some time.

Reason: I am working hard these days trying to complete Volume Two of my study, UFOs and the National Security State. I am very pleased to tell you that progress has been going very well. I expect the book to be finished and in print before the end of 2006. At the least, I am doing everything possible to get it done by that time.

The book will have three to four times the quantity of sources than I had for the first volume, and will be a fairly complete history of the UFO phenomenon since 1973, with a particular focus on its connection with U.S. national security issues.

In fact, the main themes of the book, as it is shaping up are:

1. Documentation of the UFO phenomenon itself – a "best evidence" presentation of its reality.

2. An exploration of the relationship between the UFO phenomenon and the U.S. military/intelligence community. Also, to a secondary extent, its connection with militaries of other nations -- to the extent that it is possible for me to do this, of course.

3, The history of UFO research since the 1970s: the people, the controversies, the evolution of the field.

4. A look behind UFO secrecy, and an attempt to understand just *how* secret and expansive it really is. For instance, is there a secret space program? What of the claim that there are indeed programs to study alien technology and bodies? If so, how far has research progressed? With or without outside help, have we reached the Holy Grail of field propulsion? On what evidence can we base our conclusions?

5. An inquiry into black budget issues, media control, and other factors relevant to the secrecy. Also, a discussion of the extent to which those controlling the secrecy appear to be beyond ordinary public control. In other words, is it time we stop thinking of this subject as classified, and start thinking of it as proprietary?

6. Finally, I will explain why the need to end UFO secrecy is more urgent now than at any point in our past, and I will give my best estimate of the likely outcomes relevant to this for the next decade and beyond.

Stylistically, Volume Two will be very similar to the Volume One -- a basic historical narrative, albeit with a few thematic digressions (e.g. abductions, crop circles, animal mutilations, etc.)

It may not be easy for me to send out many "updates" until the book is nearly ready. Please bear with me during this time.

I will continue to correspond with people on a private basis, although I am trying to be economical in this matter, as well. I'll do my best.

I encourage you to write to me regarding any and all research advice, leads, encouragement, etc. at keyhole@rochester.rr.com . I can assure you that I will appreciate your assistance.

Re: UFO's and the National Security State

Here is an update Richard Dolan posted on his website on January 7, 2007.

Regarding progress on the second volume of UFOs and the National Security State, I have, as we like to say in the biz, good news and bad news. In fact, they refer to the same thing.

Which is that Volume Two is turning out to be a bear. Much longer than the first volume. So much larger, in fact, that I have been wondering whether I need to split it into two books, making the entire study a three volume affair. I am loath to do this, and suspect that I won’t, but continue to leave the matter open.

I don’t want to give a page prediction at this point, but I will say that Volume Two (which will cover 1974 to the present) will be substantially more than 500 pages, which is the length of the first volume.

The basic story of my research has been this. During the early 1990s, I became interested in UFO phenomenon. It was an interest that evolved directly out of my study of U.S. national security policy during the early cold war period. Back then, I was simply curious. Not about the answer to the UFO mystery, so much as whether this was a topic that was truly of interest to certain policymakers. Because if so, then (so I wondered) why was it not discussed in a single academic history book? After all, one has to concede it would be rather interesting if a three or four star general circa 1950 even considered that UFOs might be alien – even if such a belief turned out to be a mistake. Was this ever the case, I wondered, and if so, did this belief continue within the U.S. national security community, or did it die out at some point?

An apparently simple question. It prompted what was at the time a side project from my doctoral dissertation. Except that it consumed my efforts and I left academia to pursue it. The result was my first book, Volume One of my study.

Writing that book was my education in the field, and only a partial education at that. It was all I could do to get myself up to speed for the years I covered: the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s. By the time I finished that book, my knowledge of the later years was still fairly limited. And yet I had essentially obligated myself into writing a complete history, and absolutely wanted to do it.

So, after nearly dropping dead of exhaustion following the first book, I began the process of studying for the follow-up. This was complicated by the fact that people in the UFO community got to know me. Soon I was asked to speak at various conferences, write articles, do interviews, and undertake a substantial email correspondence. All of which was rewarding, and all of which took tremendous time away from me toward the next book.

Along the way, I discovered comparatively few researchers in this field are actively raising a family. I am, however. Raising two children and supporting my family has meant that my UFO studies must accommodate a very busy schedule of activities. Even so, I have always set aside a considerable amount of time for these studies, and my family has been extremely supportive of this. And still, it never feels like there is enough time.

By 2005, I felt that my notes for Volume Two were just about at the point where I could think about writing the book. I also decided that for the time being, I needed to stop writing articles. Somehow during the process, I stopped updating my website, too.

In fact, I spent most of 2005 doing final data collection and organization – that is, when I wasn’t speaking somewhere. By early 2006, I thought that I had a reasonable chance at completing the book that year, and I let the word out to that effect.

Well, it didn’t happen. One reason was that I was asked to participate in a television series, Sci Fi Investigates, during 2006. I gladly did so, and it was a fantastic experience for me. But it further took away what limited time I already had. Another reason is that I discovered I had collected about 6 or 7 times the amount of data for the second volume as I had for the first. And thus I wrote only a few chapters of Volume Two during 2006 – not the entire book, as I had hoped.

The readers who have read V2 tell me they like it very much. Personally, I think it will ultimately be superior to the first book. But, as I indicated, it is very, very long. I have asked every reader thus far to tell me if they felt any part was excessive, or a good candidate for trimming. None have suggested anything significant. That’s a good problem to have, but a problem all the same.

My goal is to finish Volume Two in 2007. I believe it can be done. But I think it is best that I no longer give “anticipated completion dates.  It will simply be done when it’s done.

I would like to thank the many people who have offered me encouragement on this project. Please know that I am committed to finishing it, but that it is not an easy project by any means. Soon, however, it will be out there ... then all readers, supporters and critics alike, can have their way with it.
