I have images!

I swear we just saw this "parked" object(s) on last Saturday night! Here are pictures I took of the object ( Mars )that motivated me to get the telescopes out:

It might be comet Holmes ( actually Mars ), I'm not sure, it was near the head of Orion. What is interesting is that the only "Mars" that is blurring is the one I'm trying to shoot. Just to the left of Mars (I think) we saw a "star" blinking white, green, and red. Over and over again. It was too faint to photograph with my camera but with the telescope the eight of us could see it fine. Strange indeed. I made jedimaster get up from his video games and go out into the freezing cold to view it. It's funny to me that in my pictures only "Holmes" and the building are blurring. The other stars in the background look fine. If it was motion blur shouldn't they blur too?

What we saw blinking was a deep space object, but close enough to be unsettling. Planets might twinkle but they don't blink in multi-color.







The view of "Mars" with the telescope made me think of a cell and I could see a small moon too!.

How did you get the exposures and how long were they?

A free computer program that helps me with star gazing is Stelarium at http://www.stelarium.com/. I find it handy for identifying planets and stars and it's easy to use.

btw - thanx for the stellarium link. I'd forgotten about the program and when I went to download again, I see it has gone 3-D! I remember the 2-D version. Thanx again!

Sorry, I've been swamped for a day. Bhang those are very clear pictures.

I love Stelarium. I was stargazing a few months ago and thought I was looking at Mars maybe. It turned out it was the star Antares off of the constellation Scorpius. I was surprised it was so very red.

I will definitely look for Sirius now!

Saturday morning just after 5 I went outside and noticed one of em. At first glance I automatically assumed it to be an airplane because it blinked exactly as violently as an airplane flying just next to it. Then I realized it wasn't actually moving so I thought wait it must just be really high in the atmosphere thus merely appearing not to move from my vantage point. But I stayed out there and it didn't ever move. It was very bright and violently flashing red, green, blue and white.
