Topic: Theta Meditation by CD

Hey everyone,
I got this CD the other day because it was cheap: "Theta Meditation System" from Dr. Jeffrey Thompson/The Relaxation Company.  It's two half-hour tracks of music that is at a frequency designed to entrain your brain to meditate in a theta state.  There were other CDs for other states, etc.  I was wondering what everyone else thought about this for beginning meditation.  Obviously it wouldn't be good to use something like this as a crutch, but for just starting out it might be helpful.  What does everyone know about theta brainwaves, like from our perspective? (susceptibility to control, manipulation etc.)  It says that theta waves are supposed to be good for relaxation and letting go of stress, and for creativity and visualization.  If anyone knows anything related to this, as far as if its a good idea to use or not, it'd be appreciated so I can better make my own mind up.

Thanks!

Jess

Re: Theta Meditation by CD

I think it's okay. Students of the Monroe Institute use the Hemi-Sync technology which is the same thing or similar. I downloaded a couple half-hour tracks of it and listened to it on my computer with my friends headphones and it was _very_ easy to achieve a meditative state whithin minutes [1+ minutes] while listening to the sound.

It sounded like some modulated humming with other added sounds and it made me feel like I was being taken to the center of myself and beyond . . .

If anyone knows of any negative aspects of using these supplements, please post here.

Re: Theta Meditation by CD

Years back I went through the Silva Method seminars which was 2 weekends  of lectures interspersed with guided meditations.  During the meditations they played a recorded sound designed to help bring the brainwaves down to 10 cycles per second (alpha).  It seems to have been helpful.

Xeno, where did you download the files from?  Can you post a URL or search term if you got it from P2P?

Re: Theta Meditation by CD

I got the files from a guy I met on Kazaa, he was sharing bunches of the sound recordings . . . I got two or three of them so I'll see what I can do . . .

Remember, I'm pretty sure you need to use headphones to achieve the effect.

oh ya I guess a search term would be 'Theta' 'meditation' 'hemi-sync' 'hemi' 'sync' etc.

Re: Theta Meditation by CD

Cool!  I was just thinking about this topic and wondering if I should post it.  smile  The info I have so far is about Centerpointe, and they have a website which goes in to a lot of technical detail.  The cost of the program is pretty high ($159US), but they have a free demo which I have tried.  They claim that it causes permanent positive changes in the brain, helps unite the hemispheres to achieve 'whole brain thinking', and yes you have to use headphones.  I uses the concept of bi-aural beats, different audio frequencies in both ears.  Here is some infor from www.centerpoint.com :

"In 1985 I became aware of, and began experimenting with, a remarkable audio technology I found mentioned in a research paper published in Scientific American (October 1973) by Dr. Gerald Oster, a research scientist at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York. This audio technology, when placed beneath soothing music and listened to with stereo headphones, produces some absolutely mind-blowing experiences (and benefits) for the listener:

Profoundly deep meditation...

Dramatic increases in the production of a whole variety of beneficial brain chemicals, including pleasure-causing endorphins-as well as a number of others proven to slow aging and increase longevity and well-being...

The release and falling away of dysfunctional mental and emotional patterns (such as anger, fear, anxiety, depression, sadness, substance abuse, self limitations, etc.)-even those that have stubbornly resisted other methods...

Increased learning ability, enhanced creativity, greater intuition, improved focus and concentration-and (even more amazing) greatly increased personal self- awareness (scientists call this combination "whole brain functioning")...

Dramatically lower stress levels, and an increased ability to deal with whatever comes at you from the world, calmly and clearly. You become more relaxed, less anxious, more centered, more peaceful, and more connected to others...

Achievement becomes easier, and without the same feelings of anxiety and stress. Taking the risks necessary for success doesn't seem so scary anymore. Good things begin to just "happen" in such a way they almost seem to fall right into your lap...

The need for sleep decreases, yet aliveness, vitality and energy increase! "...

In a before and after study of 19 people using Holosync audio technology the following changes were noted in levels of DHEA, cortisol, and melatonin:

In just three days, over 68% had increases in DHEA levels, with an average increase of 43.77%. Several people had increases of 50, 60, even 90%.

Cortisol, on the other hand, was down an average of 46.47%, with positive changes in 68% of the people, and with several people having decreases of 70 or 80%.

Melatonin levels increased an average of 97.77%, with positive changes happening in over 73% of the people. Many had improvements of 100, 200, even 300%.

_____________

The only cautionary info I have found is that according to some MKULTRA victims this type of technology was used to help program them along with serious trauma.  Soooo, it seems best to make sure you know WHO makes the tapes so you are not inadverantly  'programmed'.

Ooops, gotta go!  The kiddies are awake and mommy is going to make some blueberry pancakes.  I'll get bake to this later.  Have a great day everyone!

Re: Theta Meditation by CD

Okay, I'm getting 'bake' to this subject.  I did some more research and found another site that has a shareware version of this technology AND (this is really cool) it allows you to write your own recordings.  It is called the BrainWave Generator. It's free to try the first 30 days, then costs $40 to register.  Registration allows you to download other people's recordings, which are also posted on the site.  There is even a section for listeners to comment on the recordings once they try them.  I started experimenting with it Sun. night.  Seems *REALLY* good so far.  Here is the site: http://www.bwgen.com

Re: Theta Meditation by CD

I've had Brainwave Generator for about 2 years now, have had many good experiences with it, especially Lucid Dreaming. I have alot of mp3's for meditation, lucid dreaming, and general relaxation. 'Tis a good program indeed.

Re: Theta Meditation by CD

I have been listening to that Jeffrey Thompsom Theta CD for years.  Wonderful piece of work. The only thing I have found that compares is the holosync technology. Holosync will put you very deep. Drawbacks to holosync are ridiculous cost and the surfacing of unconscious material (which they warn you about beforehand) which can cause all sorts of mood swings. I have used holosync for 1 year and I'm thinking of going to the next level. I have made a lot of advances this past year, I'm not sure how much, if any, part holosync played in that. I give the Thompson CD's the highest ratings if you're not ready to plunk down the money for holosync (try ebay for used holosync CDs).

Re: Theta Meditation by CD

Right now, you can download a ton of the Holosync and Hemisync sounds from the eDonkey or eMule network. I just recently got done downloading the entire Monroe Institute Gateway series, Waves I - VII.

-Not familliar with those networks. Are they peer to peer types? I'm on a mac so it is sometimes hard or impossible to access some of the networks. More info please as I'd love to get the Hemisync stuff.

Thanks, Stephen

Re: Theta Meditation by CD

we got the wave series years ago...never did complete it.  ours are on tape and would like to convert to cd's...you hear all sorts of oh, i don't think you can do that, will loose something in the reproduction thing...

anyone here have experience with such?

thanks

Re: Theta Meditation by CD

now playing with the brain wave generator...some of the user presets are very good.  was listening to one last night for about 45 min while doing other things...went to bed at about 2 am...and woke up at 5:15 am feeling so alert and rested...thought i must have dozed off early felt so rested...then remembered it was actually only a few hours earlier that i laid down...so let my body rest a few more hours but got up at 7:30 as i just could not lay down any more.  yesterday was a very physical day, raking, using a rock bar to remove rocks...working on a new duck yard...still after only a few hours feel very rested.

might be something to this...and finding lots of links to study the frequencies for the brain...ever think how much we don't feel our internal organs or our brains...so we go around in this body totally re-acting to external stimulation and our thoughts seem to have control over us.  once you become familiar with your brain frequencies you could alter them at will, but first you have to know what they feel like.

Re: Theta Meditation by CD

hi palulukon,
which bwgen preset did you listen to that 45 min before sleep?
how much do you sleep on average (i do 8 hours)
did you have an afternoon dip today?

the eyes of truth are always watching you

Re: Theta Meditation by CD

many interesting user presets...i am trying to remember just what one i listened to last...was it drum beat or shaman beat...damn, no log file to be sure...

however, what i am understanding, have understood before, is our brains are so out of synch mostly always...and if we can just balance them, with any frequency then a harmony happens...did not have as many disconnected dreams when i awoke and was able to remember them more clearly...usually when i sleep the dreams here there everywhere...

next time will make a point to keep a log file...i was just messing around with the presets...thook listened to a diff one the other night and when he awoke felt so much better...

will let you know if the dip comes

usually sleep 7 to 8 hours...sometimes a little less.
