Re: What's the latest in Florida?

Hi everybody,

Here we go again!  Jeanne isn't turning north so she's likely to pass near to right over our heads here.  She's about 70 miles a little SE of here, has been downgraded to cat. two hurricane status, and they're expecting her to be a cat. one by the time she gets here.  This would be a stronger storm than was Frances, we are likely to have much stronger winds.... I live in a concrete building and there are security bars on any exposed windows, I feel safe.  And of course, I'm prepared smile.

We, as you can see still have electricity, but I don't expect that to last too long, we rushed to make waffles for breakfast while we could.

I have been reading the posts here and the Matthew transmission was very interesting.

montalk, at sunset last night the air was sooo odd.  There was the yellow tint to the air that's been discussed before. It was very wicked, my mate and I went outside, the wind was blowing, the clouds were dark and kinda roiling.  And that strange color to the air... even though the wind was blowing it got real still for a few moments.

Thank you Kathy, you are very dear.  Welcome to the board!  And of course that thanks is extended to all others keeping FL in their thoughts.

Anyway, better post this before I can't.  I'll check in with y'all when I can.

Re: What's the latest in Florida?

Well, Jeanne packed more of a punch than did Frances, much stronger winds that reached 80+ mph gusts right here on the coast. I heard my particular little city mentioned a number of times on the news (on the Watchman, a convenient thing to have for info purposes), they reporting that the strongest winds were coming into this section of the coast.  The feeder bands were coming off the NE of the downgraded to Tropical Storm Jeanne, spinning out over the gulf, gaining speed to hurricane force winds, and spinning onshore at my county as well as the county below this one.  That tree I talked about in an earlier post?  It has two main branches left now!  Even with the windows and doors closed this time we could hear the limbs cracking off.  I'll tell ya, for standing and watching the trees whipping around in the wind like they did I marveled that they weren't being pulled apart at all seams. What a sight!  'Mighty as an Oak' indeed. And electricity was only out for 12 hrs. this time.

I haven't seen any video of the east coast, but obviously it can't be good. I'm sure we were extremely lucky here.

So, two hurricanes taking almost the same path within three weeks, four total in six weeks.  And all causing major destruction. I've lived here ten years and have seen nothing like the past 6 seeks.  There are people who've lived here all their lives and haven't seen anything like this... and the hurricane season isn't over until Nov. 30.

Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.

Re: What's the latest in Florida?

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you guys: yesterday I lifted the toilet seat and the water in the commode was swirling... hmmm, counterclockwise I think.  Likely of course because of all the barometric pressure, but all the same strange when everything else in the apt. is seemingly standing still.  Even though a plumbing system is different from a human body, this also makes me to wonder how that affects the water in the body.  I sure as heck have a headache today.

Re: What's the latest in Florida?

I just talked to my mate who is out and about driving around doing his job which takes him all over town, he's a Construction Superintedent. He'll be run ragged by the end of the day, much less the end of the week. They've already been hired this morning to cleanup a house that a tree fell on and demolished.  It's important to note this is not a man taken with overreactive statements.

He says it's "utter chaos" out there.  Not once, but three times he said, "This is just wild".  I guess there's cops all over the place, trees down in the roads, signs down in the roads, buildings with roofs blown off, flooding, and everybody and their brother seems to want to be on the roads right now.  I guess we're lucky to have electricity here at my pad because it's one of the only places locally that has service. He says that there is way more structural damage after Jeanne than after Frances.  What a difference just 10-20 mph wind gusts can make in damage.

Re: What's the latest in Florida?

Hi Auendove,

Thanks for the updates.   Wow!!    Now, have you heard anything about the Fort Lauderdale area?   For some reason, that area seems to get neglected in news reports, don't ask me why.   It has over 1 million people living there, and is sandwiched between West Palm Beach and Miami, but really, who cares, right???   big_smile   Seriously, I saw NOTHING about Ft. Lauderdale on the news in our motel rooms back during Frances.  The only thing I've been able to gather about Ft. Lauderdale after Frances was that they were without power for a bit of time, and there was no more gasoline left at any gas station, or ice to keep people cool.   And we got that tidbit of info. from an AM radio station while traveling north through Georgia.   On television....nada.      So just wondering if you've seen or heard anything yet after Jeanne, since Fort lauderdale is within 80 miles of where it made landfall.   Thanks...

Re: What's the latest in Florida?

Hi ya lyra!

I turned on the 4 PM news program and, voila!, they showed how 54 of the 67 counties in FL were affected by Jeanne, so I can easily answer your question.  The two southerly counties that weren't affected were Dade and Monroe.  Broward Co., as you know, where Ft. Lauderdale is, being right north of Dade Co. probably experienced the hurricane in a minimal way.  If I understand hurricane dynamics correctly those areas south of a hurricane are likely to be less affected.

Since this morning I have found water damaged sheetrock in my bedroom.  And my man-critter got himself minorly hurt today working to pull that tree off the house I was writing about earlier.  A sprained ankle.  He's reverted to a five year old saying he's "broken", that he "took a real shellackin'", and now he's hanging on me...poor 'lil guy.  Gotta go be a nurse now big_smile.

Re: What's the latest in Florida?

The last time four hurricanes hit one state was in 1886, in Texas.

Here's the thing though....They're forgetting that Florida was hit by FIVE hurricanes this season.  Anybody remember Hurricane Bonnie??  Back in July?    It's like it never happened now.   Granted, it didn't do any damage, but it technically was a hurricane, and it made landfall up in the panhandle, crossing over Florida and up into the Carolinas.  I guess they're only counting the ones that did damage.  oh well.   But as far as I know, it's technically five, which is even better than the Texas record.

Tropical Storm Bonnie never actually made it to hurricane status.

Thanks for the update...I had heard Hurricane bonnie this, and Hurricane bonnie that, so I figured it was one, (although a pretty mild one).   But that explains why it seems to have dropped off the face of the earth!    It was just a tropical storm.    It's still amazing though....4 hurricanes, 1 tropical storm, and grazed by another tropical storm. (Alex)   What a year....

Re: What's the latest in Florida?

We traveled through Punta Gorda on our way to Ft. Myers for the holiday and we were stunned by what little we did see (because we were on the Interstate doing 80) in a matter of a few minutes.

You know those tall 50-60ft light poles on freeways? We saw a number of them bent in half like they were trashed paper straws. We passed by hundreds and hundreds of temporary housing units. There were still huge, huge piles of debris. In this one certain area the tree groves were all just stripped of their leaves and height.  The palm groves looked like they were all twisted up. This much still almost a half a year after Charley hit.

All of this was one thing, but the energy of anxiety that both myself and my mate (he not always so sensitive to subtle energy) felt was very strong. I had thought that I was feeling the anxiety the first time passing through because what was seen was rather shocking, but the same feeling came over both of us again as we passed back through going home. We both got the willies thinking about how horrific it must've been hunkered down somewhere with all that wind force for 3 hrs., praying for one's very life.

I'll tell ya, those few minutes when we passed through the first time did more to make me reconsider living in FL than did the whole summer of storms we had here. Really. I had heard people who'd been to Homestead after Andrew talk about how stunning it was, but I didn't truely understand until last Friday.

As it is now, even in my area where minimal damage was done relative to other areas, shingles for roofing are simply not to be had, people have blue tarps on their roofs down south. Screening is not to be had (for pool cages and patios). My mate is a construction super and his company, roofing and remodeling, had million dollar-plus years each.

At the company xmas dinner party the big bosses, three of them :x, actually had the nerve to say they were grateful for the hurricanes because they've made a lot of money in bonuses. One of them was bragging about paying off his house, another bought a boat... though they did say they were sorry so many lost their homes roll. Very, very tacky.

The owner of the business asks that everyone at the dinner table says what they're grateful for in their lives... some said hurricanes, I simply said "I'm grateful for change".

You see, I know what they didn't, we'll be leaving this area in a few months, for other reasons and not because of hurricanes. I think it's kind of odd because people around here are already talking about next summers hurricanes, and I'm just not seeing it.

BTW, what are y'all doin' up there in the northern states? We're freezing our patooties off down here! big_smile Brrrrr!

.....exactly.  Because there's always next year's hurricane season, and the year after that.....

Something to keep in mind is the fact that 2004's hurricane season may very well become the norm in the future.   Japan was hit by a record **Ten** typhoons this year.  Ten!   Including the biggest one to ever hit Japan in modern history.    Why?   Because the ocean temperatures finally rose several degrees.   The climatologists have been talking for years about the impending ocean temperature rise.....and it finally happened.   After I read that I wondered if it applied to the Caribbean / Atlantic  as well, and could be the reason for so many hurricanes hitting the U.S. in one season.

I believe this will be the norm from now on.  If the ocean temps have indeed risen by several degrees as it's been claimed, then of course it's going to keep wreaking havoc.  Not trying to be a fear monger and get people scared, it's more of a common sense monger, even if it's erring on the side of caution.    wink

sigh.   Some people are just disgusting.  It never ceases to amaze me.   THAT was the rampant attitude I found down there in Florida.   Just disgusting.   So many disgusting people with "me me me" attitudes."   And I'll be all politically incorrect and say this, but I find it simply amazing that they're the ones who live and survive and even GLEEFULLY PROFIT on these hurricanes, while the decent regular people were the ones who died.   I mean, what's going on with THAT??!?

Freezing our butts off in 20-ish degree weather.   Yesterday I had random images going through my mind of Florida and Southern California and feeling like I want to just up and go back.   So funny timing of you resurrecting this thread.   I'm glad, cause I needed the reminder.........

Re: What's the latest in Florida?

If you have an aversion to mainstream news reporting you may not want to read this because I heard this on the news, and I haven't yet found a link for this info, but...

FEMA is blaming a "computer glitch" on the mispayment of funds in the amount of apx. $29 million to FL residents of Miami-Dade county.

Miami-Dade county?

Miami-Dade county was one of the very few counties in FL that wasn't affected by the hurricanes last summer. Miami-Dade county never even experienced winds over 40-50 mph, these not even tropical force winds. They don't anticipate recovering any of the money because those who were payed relief funds are "poor" and have already spent the money.

A $29 million computer glitch? Yeah, right.... more like the US Federal Blunderment at work.

roll Just how in the hell does something like this happen?

$29 million... for cryin' outloud! And to blame it on computers no less... somebody's got to run those computers, somebody's got to input the info, somebody's (in a position of authority) got to approve the release of funds somewhere along the line... somebody made a huge blunder, not a computer system.

Maybe the money went to all the 'residents' of Florida who 'voted' for Bush with the electronic voting machines.  hehehe big_smile
