Topic: In the state of being drunk...

Good morning. everyone.

I've been experiencing with alcoholic beverages in the past few days... The reason for this is understanding the concept and aftermath of being drunk.  Eventhough many of you have had the chance to be drunk before, I've decided to dedicate my work to being able to let the public know what being drunk is all about while being in a drunken state....  Tonight I've had the 'unprivilage' of drinking about 'almost a twelve pack of a 5 percent beer.  Some of you are probably thinking of how I've managed to write mostly without 'errors', well, let me assure you that I'm putting 100 percent of my focus on trying to make this text flawless 'to a drunken' me.   big_smile

I need questions from the audience so that in my next session I will be able to focus on specifics and the 'subtlety' behind the drunken-ness.  If anyone is interested in experimenting with a drunken persons 'identity' and/or 'character' or if anyone has any sorts of questions, while I will answer them while quite intoxicated the next time on this thread.... (probably on the weekend, because I work during the week), I'm looking forward to making this project a worthwhile info-fountain while I'm up to it.

Your friend, PhiConcept.

How would you describe sobriety?

"Don't eat any wooden nickels."

Re: In the state of being drunk...

You'll pardon me, but this sounds like an exercise in self-abuse. I'd pose a question, but most of those were answered for me in my late teens, and I'm not sure I'd feel good about perpetuating this experimant for you.

Even the smell of alcohol puts me off these days, I know of at least one much friendlier substance, but each to their own.

And I must say, when I see "12 pack... 5%... thinking about my ex..." strung together, I get a bit worried. That don't sound like a fun road, (I've been down) and I do hope you are staying OFF the road.

I remember (very vaguely) a few 120 MPH "excursions" home. Alcohol and carburetors are not a good combo.

I hope your "info fountain" isn't in reference to projectile vomiting, remember keyboards function best when dry....  wink

Alcohol erases progress you have made in your spiritual evolution.  I believe it is banned in all Buddhist monestaries in China.  One common precept in all traditions of Buddhism says "do not use intoxicants".

Re: In the state of being drunk...

I have noticed that some of my most connected and meditative peaceful moments are in the day following drinking way too much.  I have that tired feeling where I can lay around doing nothing and feel great.  For some reason it seems that when I am in the hungover, or prehungover state I am much more relaxed, and my visioning and awakening seems to work a lot more easily.  I think this is because when I get really drunk I just let go and all my emotions flood out and I just have a really good time.  This emotional flood I am guessing gives me a lot of positive energy and the next day is like riding the crest of a beautiful wave that is soon to come crashing back to reality, and bring me way down as the wave passes by.  I have been trying to find ways to loosen up, but like with most things I don't seem to be motivated enough to do the necessarily work on my own and instead rely on this crutch.

I don't believe in Budda or Buddhism.

Re: In the state of being drunk...

Hmmm....well I wouldn't advocate drinking a lot regularly either.  But here's something for your experiment.     Do a test meditation before drinking, while drunk, and while hung over and compare experiences.    It could be something really simple like focusing on labeling the "in" and "out" breath for ten minutes.    Tolle says that being drunk slips one below regular awareness while meditation shifts you above it and the appeal of drunkenness is that you get out of being in the normally aware state but it isn't going in the right direction.   Seemed on the money to me.    And please take some milk thistle to help out your poor liver.

Re: In the state of being drunk...

Interesting experiment. One of my 'awakening moments' actually occurred when I got very drunk. It made me suddenly aware of the sober observer within me that was quietly witnessing my drunken behavior. And it was not affected by alcohol at all. Also, the 'nada' sound becomes much more intense and noticeable, creating that surreal sensation of everything around you being artificial.

Yes, alcohol can provide a release of pent-up emotion. The festivities for the worshipers of Bacchus and Dionysus were all about that release, and it can be a good thing once in a while, in a safe environment.

But use a bit of caution, PhiConcept, as the release is made possible by the dampening effect of the alcohol on your inhibitions (or boundaries, or common sense, whatever you like smile). When I was younger, I did some very dangerous and foolish things when I was drunk that I'm still amazed I actually lived through. I'm sure many of us have stories like that... roll

So I rarely drink anymore, as I prefer Ape-x's "friendlier substances" occasionally. But a good margarita now and then is still a wonderful thing. wink

Just be safe and enjoy your experiment, Phi.

Cheers

Re: In the state of being drunk...

The observations I have made over the years in the ER is that alcohol tends to be a magnifier of what is really on the inside. If you are a mouthy, belligerent putz, your are even more obnoxious when drunk. If you are philosophical you spew it out, if your're laid back you chill even more, if you are emotional that to gets exaggerated, if you are insecure then suddenly nobody likes you and your significant other is cheating on you.

For me I do goof ball things sober, so I did even more ridiculous things drunk...but couldn't remember a lot of them, so I quit getting drunk like that.

Peace,
Teddy

Re: In the state of being drunk...

I think I mentioned before that I am not Buddhist, but I am familiar with their teachings since that is how I was raised.  I don't drink alcohol because I see no reason to live in a lowered state of consciousness.  But since Buddhist monastaries prohibit it, they might do that for a good reason.  Although Catholic monastaries don't ban alchohol.  A lot of monks are drunk all the time.  Their favorite moment is getting slammed from the left over wine after holy communion which they do just about every day.

I think Eckhart Tolle mention that when you are drunk, your painbody takes over you.  Because your painbody seeks pain, it makes you do things that you might later regret.

Re: In the state of being drunk...

I don't drink often anymore, once I realized that alcohol's main effect (at least to me) is to suppress my intuition, my connection to Source.  Even with only a couple drinks in me, I notice the effect significantly now, even if my outward behavior isn't all that different.

It feels like it puts my mind and body on autopilot.  Like T-Ren said, it acts like a magnifier, but to me it's more than that.  It's like whatever personality your spiritual path has caused to be imprinted on your 3D mind, under the influence of alcohol that personality is entirely in control.  So even if your true self is positively oriented, and with alcohol you act positive and happy, ultimately it's still artificial because you're running off a 3D imprint.  To me, alcohol takes away the steering wheel of my life, and I just coast for a while, which on rare occasion may be desirable but most of the time it's just an escape that doesn't feel appropriate.

Re: In the state of being drunk...

Alcohol is a horrible drug. It has killed half of my family of origin and nearly took me out as well. I heard an interesting story once, I can't verify it as fact, but supposedly a priest who is skilled in exorcisms always asks before he begins his work : "is there an alcoholic in the house?". I wonder why he would ask that.
