Re: What do you do for a living?

There's certainly a lot to be said for trades.  Not a waste of time at all, imo.  Regardless of the $ one makes, knowing skills is a huge plus.  If you have a well rounded working knowledge of several skills you can really help yourself and others immensely.  Apprenticing at a young age and then growing into one's own business is a great way of getting a career, but it's getting much harder to do that.

Re: What do you do for a living?

Lyra---thanks for the clarification...

Actually, when I talked about doing what you love, I meant doing it with common sense.  There are people out there who would think that selling their necklaces on a blanket will provide a living; however, I am not one of them.  I think that the idea is solid, but not too many people know how to make it a reality.  And you're right about not all hobbies being able to support someone.  But not many people like just one thing.  I think a combination of passions with good common sense and maybe some help from the BBB would be enough to get someone on the right track to independance.  There are way too many small business out there for me to think that it can't be done.  Unfortunately, because there are so many chain stores, the small biz suffers.  This is what needs rectified.

Thanks for your input!

Hey Auscastian!  That's fabulous what you're doing. I really like your logo, too.  Do you make your own clothes or do you just screen print them?  I had thought of being a seamstress, and my friend had thought of just taking t-shirts and painting them with thought-provoking things.  Maybe a combination of both would work...Just wondering out loud. smile

Soloflecks----you're absolutely right.  Even if your skills don't make a lot of money, they are priceless, especially in light of the way things are heading here on planet earth.  The more basic skills one has, the better off they'll be if/when the shit hits the fan.  There'll be no bead making then, but rather plenty of seed-sowing, harvesting, making clothes, etc.  You know, basic survival skills...

Thanks again for all of your thoughts and opinions!

No prob....and the funny part is, today I just talked to my staffing agency on-site rep about ending my assignment with this particular company!  big_smile  It pays the most out of any job I've ever had, but is completely useless.  One of the top three most pointless jobs I've ever held.   And I've had a LOT of jobs.  So that says something!   Truly, I don't even know why this company has me working here.  They are literally scraping the bottom of the barrel for work for me to do, and when they do come up with something it's utterly ridiculous.  So off I go.  Onto something with an actual point!  But no stress or heaps of responsiblity.  I used to worry about being without a job, but not anymore.

Hey Seeking the Truth, I screen print all my clothes.  And ya know that thought of yours could definitely turn into something, same with your friend.  The fact of the matter is people will buy anything, so if you combine creativity with originality I think that would  definitely light a spark and then you could possibly implement some sort of positive movement into it??

Re: What do you do for a living?

Currently into my fourth career. I design and sell a line of medical office equipment. Generally direct upfit or renovation, I try not to deal with contractors. Physicians are very picky and anal but they pay well. I also coach a number of young aspiring women golfers. I fine tune swings and course management.
Prior to this I was in the wholesale auto trade for 12 years. Dealt in higher line cars and 4x4 vehicles that were primarily shipped into Central and South America. This was very lucrative when you weren't chasing receivables.
Prior to that I was in public relations with 3M in Southeast Asia. My golf game literally got me that job. I was the recreational valet for all the big wigs 3M wanted on board. They would come to Malaysia or Indonesia to party and grift. If they wanted it, I had to go get it. It was nothing for 3M to dump $150k on a dozen execs in a weekends time. We sponsored a golf tournament for 50 fat cats outside of Pattaya once which featured bar girls as prizes. I remember riding in a bus to the resort with 60 Thai hookers , half drunk singing 'Won't You Take Me To, Funkytown". The exploited being further exploited. It's where my distain for corps was cemeted.
Prior to that I was a golf bum. Played on the Florida and Texas mini tours. Never won much money. Played with the likes of Paul Azinger and Jeff Sluman.

Re: What do you do for a living?

At present I don't work, have not been for 12 months now. I need to find something, though, as I've been given the "get up and work" warnings for a while now, or else there will be an attempt to send me back to my "father" in the state I was born in. Yet to find myself, let alone my passion (being stagnated doesn't help), but I've zeroed in on nature / stuff that deals with as little technology as possible, as I'm sick of computers. I have a major guilt-trip from not giving back what I take, so what I've done thus far is adopt an extremely utilitarian lifestyle and consume as absolutely little resources as possible.

Re: What do you do for a living?

I thought this is a good time to post what I do for a living since I have clarified my direction a bit more now.

At the moment I am studying a commerce degree majoring in actuarial studies - yuck! Ok it's not that bad because I now understand a lot of things that I would have otherwise just not cared about. I've learnt a lot about the business world and this has actually helped me - a little to say the least - give me conceptual tools about how a business operates and this will really help when I start my own business.

But what I really want to do is to become a photoreading instructor. The photoreading whole mind system is a learning process so what I want to do is teach and empower people that they can devour books very quickly. After my commerce degree, I want to get some teaching qualifications so I am able to teach this to a wider audience - teenagers, children, adults, corporate types etc.

To support this pathway, I am tutoring mathematics at my home. I have three students and they are really enjoying what and how I teach them. Hopefully more students are coming. I guess my higher self will provide them once I am able to handle my current life circumstances.

I am also in this Entrepreneurial Investment club where I am currently educational officer - so what I do is I am preparing this educational syllabus to members and I do presentations on stock market basics, value investing and the personal development side of financial energy.

I am also participating in a public speaking club - called Toastmaster's International. I attended one just tonight and it was great being exposed to it for the first time. Working at my public speaking will also help me become a first class teacher.

So it's all coming together eh!! Life is getting better.

cheers Pictus!
It's really wierd when you live on purpose. I feel way more confident about life and I am having fun with it more.
I'm also doing more things other than studying and I do think you need to ground yourself in physical life first before you begin a spiritual path - and
your physical life is your spiritual path. The physical and spiritual are not disconnected. They are one. So enjoy the physical but be mindful of the finer and more
etheral things in life that permeate everything.

I've recently discovered a similar thing in my own life, due to a subtle shift in my outlook. Whereas before I was distinguishing betwen the spiritual and everything else, something then clicked and I now see, correctly, everything as an integrated whole. It's weird because I already knew that approach was right before, yet looking back I wasn't really walking the talk as such. I can't pin the change in perception to any one thing and it's as if things just moved into place over a short period of time.

Re: What do you do for a living?

Lyra! I would like to find out more about your temp jobs (how they work, how you get them, what sites you visit and so on). Currently, I do marketing/sales and merchandising for companies such as Magellan(GPS) Vonage, Sony, Creative, NVIDIA and many others. I would like to get into a temp agencies and  be able to combine the Marketing/Sales, Merchandising with Temp agency jobs. It will give me the freedom to continue working on my books and my freelance writing business. Currently, I am also, trying to move out with my girlfriend and we are thinking about kids and such. I am finishing up College and receiving my AA for English. I already received my communication certificate and will need 2 classes, to get my technical writing certificate. What ideas, tips, books or websites do you have to offer in order for me to dig into this field.

Also, do you think that a guy can do this agency thing? Sometimes, I get the idea, that people are biased against guys doing this type of work.

Thank You! SO MUCH!
