Re: The Music Thread

I think I already mentioned them on here in another music thread, but you should definitely check out the post-metal band Isis. They write amazing, transcendental music which just takes you to another place. I'm seeing them live next week too big_smile
http://www.myspace.com/sgnl05 <---they have songs to listen to here.

Isis have toured with Tool, and there's definitely a similarity between the two bands although their genres are quite different. As with Tool, their songs take a while to understand & fully appreciate, but if you're a patient listener & are willing to persevere with multiple listens then you should "get it" eventually. Give them a try.

Also see Collide, a darkwave/electronica group who make very calming, spiritual music:
http://www.myspace.com/collide - (listen to "Razor Sharp")

The members of Collide have released an album as The Secret Meeting, their side project, which is also really good. See http://www.myspace.com/thesecretmeeting

Those are my music recommendations. I also listen to a lot of Tori Amos, Tool, PJ Harvey, Bjork & Massive Attack but it seems that everyone has already heard of those wink

Re: The Music Thread

For anyone who likes alt. country / acoustic rock type music then I strongly recommend you check out a band called Bright Eyes

They released an album in 2005 called "I'm wide awake, it's morning" which was my most listened to album for all of last year, and they've just recently released a follow-up called "Cassadaga" which I've no doubt will be my most listened to album for the whole of this year, it's just outstanding. Singer/songwriter Conor Oberst writes some of the most beautiful and poetic songs that I've heard in a long long time!

Here's a few of their songs courtesy of YouTube

"No one would riot for less" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ER9KCkOfcxQ (Set to 'Children of Men' - not official video)

"First Day Of My Life" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwFS69nA-1w

"At the bottom of everything" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHic8R-zc8c

"Make a plan to love me" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTomyBWN6BQ (not official video)

Re: The Music Thread

So I'm making my home from work today, just walking down the street minding my own business, when I hear these wild sounds drifting on the breeze.  I'm all, "what the??" and follow my ears until "yeeeeessss, that's music...where's it coming from?"  I continue my little detour, round a corner and come upon this group of street musicians and I am rooted...ROOTED...to the spot.  Utterly fixated.  No word of a lie.

Any audiophiles out there need to check this out cuz it's so...well, see for yourself.  The video doesn't quite do it justice.  The live performance is an absolute must-see, I gotta say.

Re: The Music Thread

So...I have this foreign music thing going on with me for some reason for the past 2-3 years and is a guilty pleasure of mine. Anyways, there's this French song that I really like. I don't know much French other than a few words I remember from French back when I was in middle school. This song is pretty catchy and I like it. Hopefully someone here will like it so here goes nothing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfP8lVfbg5w

The song is called "Tu Es Foutu" which means "You're screwed up" or something along those lines and the artist is In Grid.

p.s. I remember telling a few people in the IRC chat not too long ago that I liked foreign music and Montalk said I might have a foreign spirit attachment that wants to listen to Spanish/French/Italian songs, so now I laugh to myself every now and again whenever I listen to music like this haha. lol

Re: The Music Thread

Some thoughts about modulation:  I like music that modulates from one melodic scale to another. The most talented composers employ it but its use in mainstream music has declined since the 80s. Billy Joel used it in songs like "For the Longest Time" or "Uptown Girl." Classical composers like Bach (his fugues especially) and Monteverdi or Palestrina use it naturally and extensively.

The hyperboreans (ancient scandinavians) were known for their unusually beautiful melodies and even today music from that region uses modulation more than that of other regions. Esoterically I think it represents a  translation between realms or dimensions.

Melodies that modulate are harder to remember because instead of just being a pattern of notes within a single scale, the scale or key itself changes as well. The difficulty in writing such a melody is that no matter how it twists, it must do so smoothly in a way that eventually connects back to itself like a mobius loop.

Tonight I stumbled across a song that modulate like crazy, sometimes every single measure. This is a good example of what modulation is like.

     http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=8725
(scroll down to the flash player, the song called Embrace the Storm).

Sometimes I hear songs in dreams and manage to remember them upon awakening. They tend to modulate and be more creative and catchy than anything I can come up with just on my own, which is a bit odd. Music is one of the few things as tangible in one reality as in another. I cannot bring a dream object with me into the waking world, but I can bring a song.

There is a link to a good article below about the death of dynamic range of modern modern cd music and how they are compressing the frequencies so its all just loud.
Apparantly this makes the music very energy sapping and tiring to listen to.

Re: The Music Thread

Doc, wow that really shows how the dBs have crept upward. I burn mix cds alot, and there may be a span of +20 years between songs I include on one disc. I "level match" my recordings, and it may take +6 to +8 dB to make the older songs match the newer songs. I also have a few CDs that claim they are "enhanced", I have noticed that they are really overenhanced. the brightness and harshness is there at low volume, and this can not be undone. I've burned a few that were at too high a record level, just experimenting.. they ended up in the trash.

Montalk, I had some trouble with the flash player with Stream of Passion, but I found it here http://www.last.fm, sounds good, Scandi music should be an example for western music... yeah like that'll happen.

Also found this- music from DNA sequences, http://whozoo.org/mac/Music/samples.htm "genetic music", interesting stuff...

Life is timeless, days are long when you're young
You used to fall in love with everyone
Any guitar and any bass drum
Life is a drink and you get drunk when you're young
Life is new and there's things to be done
You can't wait to be grown up
Acceptance into the capital world
You pull on some weed, then you pull on someone when you're young

But you find out life isn't like that
It's so hard to comprehend
Why you set up your dreams to have them smashed in the end

But you don't mind you've got time on your side
And they're never gonna make you stand in line
You're just waiting for the right time

You're fearless and brave - you can't be stopped when you're young
You swear you're never ever gonna work for someone
No corporations for the new age sons
Tears of rage run down your face
But still you say "it's love"

And you find out life isn't like that
It's so hard to understand
Why the world is your oyster but your future's a clam

It's got you in its grip before you're born
It's done with the use of a dice and a board
They let you think you're king but you're really a pawn

You're fearless and brave - you can't be stopped when you're young
You used to fall in love with everyone
Any guitar and any bass drum
