Hi Ayla, welcome to Noble Realms.
Morningsun76 said it all, really, don't have anything to add. That was good advise. I'm glad you resurrected this thread though, resurrecting old threads is a good thing, keeps things stirred up.
You know what I learned, which I mentioned in my first or second post on this thread? Nobody ever checks or verifies the highschool diploma thing. I've worked in California, Oregon, Connecticut, Florida and now Virginia, at seriously more jobs than my age, everything from waitressing, hotels, office / administrative work, etc. and nobody's ever cared. Not to say that I'm encouraging lying or anything, cough cough no, not me, aheam
but even if you dropped out, got your GED, but still put "Diploma" on job applications or resume....they'll never know the difference. Nobody checks or cares. My diploma is sitting in a box, where it has for 11 years! But like morningsun wrote, you have to do what's right for you. Listen to what your intuition is telling you.
The school thing and college came up yesterday at work, when I was finishing up my temp job. I'd put in my notice and so yesterday was my last day, and I have a new job waiting for me next week. So anyway, I was shooting the breeze with my supervisor, this guy named Dave. We were talking about the job position, and he was musing about what type of person might be good for the job, or at least, happier with it then I was.
He said, "Yeah, you know, maybe somebody who's just out of college...." (blah blah blah, don't remember the rest.) And I interupted and said, (cause I'm just so honest and frank like that
) "Wait.....can I ask something? Why would the person need to have a college education to do this job??? There's really nothing to this job, hardly any work at all. It's not mentally stimulating, it's not challenging, I don't think a person needs a college degree to do this job. They would over qualified!!!!" Or something to that effect. It was blunt, but not said in a snotty rude way. He looked surprised, but knew I wasn't trying to be mean, so he said "Oh, I don't mean that they need to have a college degree....I was just thinking of someone who maybe just graduated, and wants to stay in ____ (town where I live) and doesn't know what they want to do with themselves.....they could work here, while they figure things out or whatever, and maybe they would move up into doing hardware and programming, I don't know....."
This led to him talking about how he has friends with college degrees.....Masters Degrees.....who can't find jobs. ! That's just nuts! And Dave himself has only an Associates degree, which he got 20 years ago. He was just very lucky to land the jobs he did, and to move up the way he did and be succesful. He said his out of work college educated friends all ask him what degrees he has to be doing so well and he sheepishly tells them, "Just an AA...." !
Then we were talking about how I don't have my college degree, but I've been pretty lucky, I've done well for myself in getting into offices and such.
So that led me to think of the whole college degree thing again. I mean, what is the point????? What is the frigging POINT of spending 4, 5, 6 years of your life and $100,000 + dollars on an education which you'll be paying off for years, only to find that you can't get a job in the field you majored in?? What is the point of becoming college edu-ma-cated only to find yourself working at that job I just quit because it was mindless and I hated it?? I saw the resumes they were looking at for my replacement....holy shiiiii-iiite! People who with college degrees and WAAAAY over qualified. It's an absolute JOKE. I LAUGHED when I saw that, like, Yeah, good LUCK. You'll be here for a week and it's going to hit you....this job is mindless. You spent 4, 5 years of your life to come do this. The job with no actual work where you sit and twiddle your thumbs and try to pretend you have something to do, in between fetching lunch for the guys and being the office wench. HA! A degree for THAT? HA!!
It's nuts. That company is interviewing college educated people to go be a Go-For person. A college educated Go-For. What a nutty nutty world! What an absolute shameful waste......................
