Topic: A run in with the Thought Police.....

I am a grand parent to two 14 year old girls. They spend most summers with us and are very bright kids. We enrolled them in a summer reading program at our local library which groups kids by age and assists them with required reading for the upcoming school year. The program hires English teachers for the summer in that the libraries aren't staffed sufficiently. The students are asked to read a book every two weeks and then attend a two hour discussion or review session. I saw the books and authors involved and it's the same old list of the same old stuff. Funny how the list never changes. Toffler, Huxley and Arthur Miller to name a few. I have over time , spoonful by spoonful , addressed with my grandaughters the need for a more discerning eye to  things presented to us in school. These books are really only harmful , like a gun, when they're not handled with some degree of supervision.
Well, I had to pick them up this past week from their review session and had gotten there early because of running a few errands in the area. The instuctor is a teacher from the school the girls will be attending next year. She is a lady in her 50's who sounded to be from Mass. , with her haahd R's. I introduced myself and sat in the back of the class. The two books under discussion were  Brave New World and Tale of Two Cities. With about ten minutes to go the instuctor , probably having exhausted her load on these two books , turned to me and said that she knows that ,like all kids in school , I must have read these books and would I like to say a few words about them. I raised both hands in a rebuffing fashion only for one of my grandaughters to chime in with, "C'mon Papa, it will be fun", then turning to another child in the group saying "he won money on a game show once". With that statement now the kids are all egging me on as if having the 'Goodson/Toddman' stamp to approval. As I walked up to the front of the class I kept flashing on Rene Magritte's work. Probably a subtle reflection of the surreal nature of the moment. Would I open the pen and let the sheep run free or would I just add  the expected regurgitated drivel.? I can't embassrass my grandaughters, they don't deserve that. My dilemma was furthered when I looked into the eyes of these kids and saw a very bright and eager group awaiting my 2 cents. "Well", I said ."These are both important works, I'll address Brave New World , in that, I remember more of it". "I believe we can learn a great deal from all important works of art which are held up in our culture, these two books being no different". "It's important to understand that nearly all great works were and are brought about through commissioned efforts." I said. I gave a quick glance to the teacher who as yet seemed undettered by my comment."Michelangelo, Rafael, Mozart up to Andy Warhol and the like were all paid typically up front for most of the work they did and these authors are no different."'It's as important to read between the lines of these works as it is the text itself" I insisted."Mr. Huxley was a sociologist first and author second, who worked for the Royal Institute of International Affairs a wing of the British Military Intelligence in London". At that second the teacher said, "Well , I'm affraid that's really all we have time for and it's time to gather your things and follow me to the lobby". She turned to me with a severely glazed over restrained look. We all meandered to the lobby and were prepared to depart when the teacher asked if she could have a word with me.'Sure', I said and followed her away from earshot of the group." I don't appreciate what you did back there", she said. "You denigrate these great authors by claiming that someone paid them to write these masterpieces, that is very unfair to these children and the school system in general". I said,"Almost every artist in the past who met with success while still alive fell into favor with the crown or church and was a commissioned conveyor of images and ideas". She was now in mental overload and had no retort. She took a deep breath , rebooting-like, and said,"I don't want you or your grandaughters back in this program, in fact,  I can make things difficult for them next year at Yadayada High." "Madame", I said."You asked me to say something, if the truth is too much to bear then it confirms my opinion that the school system isn't a place for discernment or freewill"."There are other schools and other teachers and it looks as though it's time to seek them out, Good day". I got back in the car and informed the girls that we wouldn't be participating in the reading program any longer. That was met with a sheepish ,"awe" only to see them quietly high five each other in the rear view mirror five seconds later. A fleeting attempt, but an attempt!

Agreed..so much art or literature ends up canonical based not on its own merit but by some type of establishment bias. It's like they get together and decide what they want to preserve, and a lot of it is just mediocre work. People are so trusting theyll convince themselves it's good when it isnt.

Re: A run in with the Thought Police.....

Thanks to all for your kind words. The statement,"I can make things difficult" uttered that day was a little mind bending. It has eaten at me ever since. I do feel better since posting the story here yesterday. Last night at dinner one of the girls asked me if I'd ever read the book 'Night'."My friend Abby and her mom say it's the greatest book ever written!".'Really", I said."Abby and her mom probably think that Schindler's List is the greatest movie ever made too, huh?"...Astonished, she said,"Yes, how did you know that?"."Just a wild guess", I said. "Now eat your vegetables!". That's enough mental rolfing for one week.

Great Story/Sharing, Shine On!

Truths will be "Shining" like never before...so bright, in fact,
that ANY threatening faction of society that uses and abuses
their so called "authority" will be left only to themselves and
will sink or swim on their decisions and choices to continue in
the lies or change to and with the truth !

Those brainwashed types seem very smug, don't they.  And it's never enough for them to just disagree; they have to punish others for their difference.  You did a great job, and it's well that you found out before the girls started back to school.

Re: A run in with the Thought Police.....

Dan,
I believe that too!. I look forward to the raw grace shown when the vaneers erode.

Re: A run in with the Thought Police.....

Good for you ShineOn.  smile   What you said wasn't even controversial, very tame in comparison to what you could have said.....so her reaction was amazing to say the least.  Just the eensiest bit of "breaking free from the status quo" and your granddaughters got booted from the program and threatened???!     WOW.  It's worse than I thought.  Who *are* these "people" anyway?    I know others like to defend these types as just being "highly programmed", leading them to get uncomfortable and defensive when their comfort zone is breached, but I don't buy it.  There's something else going on here.

But at any rate, congrats to you.  Oh, and regarding this:

....so you noticed this too?  big_smile   So true.  The so-called classics are boring to me.  The same authors, the same books, taught the same way in every school nationwide, decade after decade.  It's old and tired, and never mind that in my opinion, many of these books are dull dull dull, with a hefty dose of more dull tossed in and aren't even well written.  Hemingway?   Overrated.  I've met so-called nobody's who wrote better and more interesting than he did.   Jane Austin and the Bronte sisters?  Writing about stuff I don't care about and can't relate to.   They wanted us to read "Wuthering Heights" in 10th grade English class in Connecticut.  I refused.  It was dull and I didn't care, and I'm not doing it, period.  I instead read my own books during class, then took the test on a book I never read and got a C.  There were people who actually read the book and paid attention during those 2 weeks of the lesson, and took notes who only got a B- or a C, so ha, there you go.  wink  But I've just never gotten why many of these "classics" are considered to be so.  Maybe I'm ignorant, I don't know, but I've heard from SOOO many people over the years that most books put them to sleep so I know it's not just me.  These books aren't interesting and aren't always well written and it bothers me that they're held up as being so great.

Anyway.  I'm digressing, getting off onto a side tangent about what makes good writing (LIFE SPARK) and why most books seem to lack it.   The real issue is the thought police, and what the implications are about so-called "people" who reacted the way that the woman did to you.  So congrats again on standing your ground!

Aye, shine on you crazy diamond smile
I may be soon be falling out with my kids school as in the UK fingerprinting of kids as young as 5  is becoming is occuring.
This is getting more and more and more prevalent, the number of Heads of school who blindly parrot all the NWO lingo like if you have nothing to hide and it safer and cuts costs etc.
I wrote to theLocal Education Authority asking them if their staff would mind being fingerprinted to gain access to their place of work, to obtain meals from the canteen, to check leaving and start times or to take books out the public library.
No reply

Its not like we are fractions of the whole but rather versions of the whole.

Wow! I didn't know that. That's pretty f*cked up. It's weird that I keep reading about how bad the UK is getting, but here in Devon, where I've now lived for 9 months, I've never felt so free or seen so little surveillance in this country. I should probably stay here! However, due to mental illness (just kidding!) I'm probably moving to London very soon!! I doubt it'll be for very long but it feels like a necessary thing for me to do right now. But I'm sure it'll be fun living in the Illuminati capital of the world! Heh! Does anybody else here live in London?

Re: A run in with the Thought Police.....

Thanks for the inspiration, ShineOn.  I love it that there are still 14 year-olds that can't be fooled by the system's programmed teachers.  And thank you, Lyra for reminding me of all the C's and B's I got for book reports on books I never read.  For some reason, I am sneakily proud of that, although I do love to read really good books.

Re: A run in with the Thought Police.....

Way to go ShineOn! I'm sure your grand daughters will do just fine outside that pod program.
I second Lyra's comment about a lot of classics being extremely boring. I initially wanted to get into them but never felt drawn to their energy. I also liked the fact that you got a C without reading the book hehe.
