Topic: The True Story Behind Facebook

Hey guys. Montalk sent me the following link regarding the government's collection of it's citizens data using services like Facebook and MySpace. While you may have suspected this before, the extent of it is greater than you probably imagine.

So the moral of the story is, it's probably better to refrain from putting any true personally identifying info on these services.

Re: The True Story Behind Facebook

Myspace doesn't have the option to put your digits, address, and other really personal information in there.
It's so much easier to lie on myspace.  Which is why I stick to myspace.
I'd say a 10-15% of the accounts on myspace are SPAM/FAKE.

While Myspace is still owned by Rupert who owns Fox and alot of people have annoying profiles. I still think it's a better option.  Just look at their bits of their privacy policy below.  It's much better then facebooks!

Myspace's Privacy Policy:

MySpace.com logs non-personally-identifiable information including IP address, profile information, aggregate user data, and browser type, from users and visitors to the site This data is used to manage the website, track usage and improve the website services. This non-personally-identifiable information may be shared with third-parties to provide more relevant services and advertisements to members. User IP addresses are recorded for security and monitoring purposes.

Sharing and Disclosure of Information MySpace.com Collects
Except as otherwise described in this privacy statement, MySpace will not disclose personal information to any third party unless we believe that disclosure is necessary: (1) to conform to legal requirements or to respond to a subpoena, search warrant or other legal process received by MySpace.com, whether or not a response is required by applicable law; (2) to enforce the MySpace.com Terms of Use Agreement or to protect our rights; or (3) to protect the safety of members of the public and users of the service. MySpace reserves the right to transfer personal information to a successor in interest that acquires rights to that information as a result of the sale of MySpace or substantially all of its assets to that successor in interest For more information see the "Changes in Our Privacy Policy" section below.

They can only hurt us if we fear them.

Re: The True Story Behind Facebook

I've got a facebook but I hardly ever use it. I don't like the resonance level there as lots of comments are so shallow and superficial. It's a bit less noisy and chaotic than MySpace I've observed.

Hell, I haven't held a solid address in ten YEARS. If they tried to find me through that sort of thing, they would be in for one hell of an egg hunt.
And if that sort of facist control system gets set up, we'll all be inprisoned anyway...

Re: The True Story Behind Facebook

I used to have an account on one of those social networking-type sites, but I quickly deleted it when I realised what was really going on. Besides, most people on there couldn't type or spell properly to save their lives.

Re: The True Story Behind Facebook

Ye.. the facebook privacy policy is pretty horrible... never really got into my space, but for some reason all my friends old and new are into facebook so I've been checking it out.
Tho I am very aware of the privacy problems.. hence the reason I'm listed as living in zimbabwe... haha.. gotta keep them on their toes.. funny thing was getting messages from old acquaintances asking me how living in zimbabwe was... smile  they hadn't quite clued in ... but scary indeed when you get all these people plugging copious amount of personal digits into the matrix as such
