Topic: Sulfites

Just a quick note for anybody who drinks wine - I kind of had to scrap the idea of drinking wine because as it was finally pointed out to me - the reason wine makes me so sleepy and fuzzy headed with this weird feeling in my brain in general is most likely due to the sulfites.  I never paid much attention to that and always just assumed that there was something different about the alcohol structure of wine versus say, those sweet sugary liquors I'm fond of.   So a couple of days ago I decided to try out a bottle of sulfite-free red wine as an experiment, see if there was any noticeable difference.  I found a bottle at Whole Foods in their "natural/organic" wines section called Frey.  It was a general red table wine, only $8.99, non-GMO grapes wink and most important - sulfite free.  Not only are there no added sulfites, but they say that there's no natural sulfites either from the fermentation process.

Well!   What a difference.   It was the first time ever that I drank wine and had no weird "head" thing going on and didn't immediately feel like falling asleep!  No residual negative effects.   I had no idea that one could even drink wine and still feel normal afterwards!  big_smile   So I don't know what the hell sulfites are, but it's like a poison additive to the wine, that's all I can say.   So if you're somebody who enjoys a glass of wine with a good meal or whatever, consider seeking out wines that are sulfite-free.  Be careful though - just because a wine says it's "organic" or "all natural" doesn't automatically mean sulfite-free, because I noticed that most of the organic/"natural" wines at Whole Foods still had sulfites in them.   So be sure to look for the labels that specfiically say that they're "Sulfite-Free."

Anyway, that's it.  Just wanted to pass that along.

Re: Sulfites

Oh wow, thanks for that, Lyra.  When drinking wine with friends, I've always said it was a "whole different kind of drunk!"  Not that I'm a wine-o, I don't drink very often.  But one glass, and I'm pret-ty tipsy! smile

You wino!

You know you're a wino!  Come on!  Admit it!!!!

But yeah, I noticed the same thing with wine - it's always had more of an effect on me than the supposed hard liqueors, creating a way worse feeling in my head.  I don't know why I even drank it come to think of it.  I like the taste, but the effect was pretty bad.  It seems to be the sulfites though.  I was really looking to feel any sort of negative something after drinking the Frey brand sulfite-free wine, but there was nothing.  In fact, within two hours of drinking it I'd completely forgotten that I'd had any at all - the buzz effects were gone and again, there was no sleepiness and or weird head feeling.

Which reminds me....liver cleanses do work!  big_smile  I'd been doing milk thistle, dandelion root and leaves, and burdock root nearly every day for the past two weeks, which help the blood, kidneys, liver and gall bladder, among other things, and it really does seem to clear out the filter.  That might be another reason that I barely felt the effects of the wine so soon after drinking it, despite its 13% alcohol content.   I know it's been mentioned elsewhere in other threads, but since we're discussing alcohol here I thought I'd mention the liver cleanse herbs.    For anybody who does currently drink or who has in the past, or if you're concerned that you're not as healthy as you could be and might have toxins built up in your liver from overall "less than stellar" eating habits, wink  then it can't hurt to try it.  But read up on any precautions of course before doing it just to make sure it'll be okay based on your own personal health situation.

Re: Sulfites

I was drinking blackcurrant juice a minute ago when i got the strange smell of ammonia in my nostrils and I instantly recall a thread on NR about bad sulphur and ammonia smells, so I log on to NR to hunt it down and I see this thread. Errrrr what's going on?

13 Days that's pretty good Lyra. I did half a day of the Master Cleanse before realising that I have a Skittles End of Season Piss Up this Friday in which much food and alcohol must be consumed, then postponed my fast. But what about Cider, is that likely to contain Sulfites or not? Because I drink cider and I start to feel like crap and I don't know if it's the alcohol itself or something else.

Oookaaayyy, you got me!  I am a wine-o.  I admit it.  Yep, I'm one of those you see walking down the street carryin' my "sweet nectar" in a brown paper sack, lol big_smile  Also known to hang out on street corners...:P

I'm not trying to derail the earlier posts, btw.  I will def. have to look into some of those methods; and thanks for the links Pictus!

Re: Sulfites

Oh yeah! (Again, I apologize for potentially de-railing this thread)  But lyra, I remember you mentioning a new write-up that would be added to your site soon. I checked out your site, and found your new "Thoughts" addition; it just seemed like you said something about your next addition being quite larger, comparable in size to "The Vortex."  (Which was an awesome read, btw)  Anyway, just wondering.

That other big write up is still on the way.  smile  I kept remembering more to include in it, while at the same time there's stuff I think I'm going to take out.  So, it's still being tinkered with.  I overestimated when it would be done, but now I think it's really almost there.   Probably by this weekend at the latest.  I hope.  !  I mean, again, it's not that much of an amazing big deal, so don't get your hopes up too much.  It's a random collection of weird anecdotes and happenings and experiences and things I've learned from it all.  Things that probably a lot of people on NR have experienced, so it won't be that big a deal to most here.  I just thought I'd compile it anyway for my own reasons, you know, why not, right?  Before I forget this stuff.  It's the stuff that fills in the gaps of "The Vortex" and my book and the other material on my website.  Like the morter between bricks.  Or caulking between tiles.    Or something.  hmm   big_smile

Oh hush! tongue  I've read every single one of your articles, some of them even twice.  I'm always happy to see when you have something new up!  So I can say with certainty that I will not be disappointed. Let me keep my hopes up, silly rabbit! wink

Also, I've noticed that you used to have a Harry Potter article, but ended up taking it down.  I wish I had the opportunity to read it when it was up.  But hey, do you by chance have it tucked away on your computer somewhere?  I hate to ask you for a favor, but I would really love to see the article, if it's not too much trouble of course.  And if it is, then that's ok! smile

Re: Sulfites

If you can find, I think it's called Orleans Farm, but definitely Orleans something, I would recommend it!  Especially the Zinfandel.  It is no-sulfites-added.

I know what you mean Lyra, I always felt crappy from wine, and then one evening I got nutty with my Uncle's "dago red", but the next morning I felt like a million bucks!  I wondered if it was the sulfites, and I tried store-brand no-sulfites-added and found out that was definitely it!

If sulfites aren't added you run a higher risk of buying a bad bottle, it happened to me once.  Also, the wine changes, so it may not be consistent from bottle to bottle.  With my uncle's homemade wine, it is completely different in the spring then in the fall.  Still good, but different.

So, drink up!!!

Re: Sulfites

Cool, Lyra!!!  Thank you so much for the info. I haven't had wine in years because even a little amount would give me a terrible headache.  I have an allergic reaction to medical sulfa, so it must be related.  Of course, I really don't drink anymore, but it's still great information, nonetheless. I will definitely check it out. I could use it for cooking--yum.  And I have a friend who drinks wine that will love to hear about this!

Thanks again for all your hard work and your awesome articles on your site.

Oh, and thanks, Pictus, for the links!
