Re: Film Favorites

Absolutely, ehhnus. I have watched the same episodes again and again, laughing harder each time, as more nuances and subtleties are recognized. The Office is Totally Brilliant. However, the "boxed set" amazon offers is just the season 1 & 2 shrinkwrapped together. Wait until November if you can, for the complete series with the christmas special. I haven't seen the special, but I've heard it's the funniest Office yet.
Have you seen The League of Gentlemen yet? Not LXG, but another stark raving mad British comedy. But don't get the video with the laughtrack, try to get the UK version, or record it from BBCAmerica if it ever shows it's misshapen head again.

Re: Film Favorites

Okay, I'll check it out.  BBC rules.  The humor is so much more intelligent, I think.  And there are so many subtelties that you don't see in American television, except perhaps in the Simpsons or Seinfeld (my personal favorites.  My favorite BBC show is Absolutely Fabulous, but I also like The Vicar of Dibley.

I want to check out: Coupling, The Office, and French and Saunders.  I may have seen an advert smile for  the League of Gentlemen...was a very old man featured?  Or perhaps men in drag?

Re: Film Favorites

Yep, Men In Drag! I think all the female parts were played by men. It was a repertory-style production with the same actors playing different parts each episode. In the first series (the only one I've seen), each of the first 5 episodes ended on a cliffhanger. The sixth brought everything together in a frantic conclusion, all the loose ends tied up in a strange knot. Fans of Monty Python would enjoy it. Black Ice Humor.

Re: Film Favorites

Just watched the movie "Frances" with Jessica Lange. I can't recommend it enough. It's the true story of the struggle of a strong STO soul in the middle of the Matrix, and it brutally exposes the myths/horrors/insanity of the psychiatric system. It also gave me loads of insights about the dynamics between STS and STO entities.

Re: Film Favorites

I like the movie 'Naked Lunch' anyone familiar?

Anybody like MTVs 'Aeon Flux' or 'Transformers Beast Machines'?

Re: Film Favorites

Aeon Flux rules!  I saw every single episode.  The animation is sooo cool, and I had a huge crush on Aeon.  I heard that there are new episodes now, is that true?

2. Brazil (Terry Gilliam). Robert De Niro's best role as the renegade plumber swinging in on his Bat-Rope. Too many great qualities to mention.

I had to comment on this because I finally got a chance to see "Brazil" last night for the first time.   All I can say is "WOW!!!"

SEE this movie, everybody.   If nothing else, watch it for the amazing prophetic forshadowing of things to come.    How did Terry Gilliam know???    This movie is like a cross between "1984", "Naked Lunch" (minus the bugs!) and "Time Bandits" (gilliam's other major film)   But take a close look at the posters on the walls in the background througout the movie --  Stuff like "Don't suspect a friend.....report him!"    and loads of other stuff pertaining to "terror prevention" and living in fear and paranoia.    The funniest was a poster for a fear-free resort, where you can relax without paranoia.  Woven amongst the plot is this whole thing regarding "terrorism" and the lead character who works for the "Ministry of Information."    People can be arrested, detained and killed with no reason and no explanation, the law is never held accountable for anything, including their mistakes, "terrorism" acts happen all the time and serves to fuel the way the society runs.   There's just so much happening with this movie, I love it, and it's got the trademark British / Monty Python humor all over the place.   This is one worth owning.   I'll be hunting it down on DVD, that's for sure.   If you've read and enjoyed Orwell's "1984", and thought "Time Bandits" was a kick as film from your childhood (or hell, even your adulthood!)  then you'll like "Brazil."

Re: Film Favorites

hey ya Brazil --

I like the scene where they're sitting in the restaurant and a terror attack happens in the same room then the waitor brings a wall partition so they can't see the terrorism. The lady says, "son, why don't you do something about these terrorists?" He says something like 'it's my lunch period' . . .

It was his lunch hour AND it "wasn't his department, besides."   big_smile big_smile   That scene was SO British, bringing in the partition to block out what was happening so they can go about their lunch, pretending it's not happening.   Oh yeah...and you had to love their lunch.   Piles of green glop, with a picture card mounted on the plate showing what the food is *supposed* to be.   I mean, if the picture says it's this, then it must be this, despite what my eyes are telling me!  big_smile    Great metaphor for many bigger issues, eh?   There are so many metaphors in this movie, and direct prophesies.

Re: Film Favorites

lyra, I envy you getting to watch Brazil for the first time, as the reality suggested by the film happens 'live' all around us. If you can afford it, spring for the Criterion DVD.
Brazil may turn out to be the most significant film of the 20th/21st centuries. So many levels, so much information, so few reasons to miss it.
