Topic: Creepy job experience

I started a new job Monday before last in a new store that just opened up in town.  It's part of a chain but privately owned.  The owner didn't explain much about the job when he hired me but I thought, what the heck, I'll give it a try.  He seemed like a really nice guy, good energy.  He left Target to start his own business and said he understood a lot about the games corporations try to play.  So I thought he might be really awesome to work for.

Well for the last week and a half I worked helping them set up the merchandise in the store.  It was really fun, because they let us be creative with the displays, and they loved mine.  Every day when we finished the owner would shake everyone's hand and say thanks for everything you did today.  That impressed me a bit, because most supervisors take workers for granted.  Store set-ups are hard, nasty work.  I did one for Michaels a few years ago and the supervisors treated us like shit, because they get a big bonus if they get the store ready for opening earlier than scheduled.  But this experience was nothing like that.  It was laidback and they treated us with respect.

So then last weekend we had orientation.  They told us that they would decide who would get to be full-time based on your performance during set-up.  Yeah whatever, that's just standard for retail now, no one hires you in at full-time.  It's sort of a miracle if a store even has any full-time positions outside of management anyway.  Okay, no.  It's really offensive to be told flat out that everyone has to compete for these precious full time spots.  They hadn't even figured out what kind of benefits they are going to offer yet, but they are assuming that everyone is so desperate to work for them?

Then on top that they dumped this big schpiel on us about how we are going to be all cozy with each other like a big family.  But we have to treat each other with respect, because if you just make someone uncomfortable, it will be considered harassment.  It wouldn't even have to be any particular behavior.  Just make someone u.n.c.o.m.f.o.r.t.a.b.l.e. and you would be written up for it.  WTF?!  Well hey, what about the one woman who kept asking everyone to give money for some girl I had never even met, just because "her grandmother died"??  Wasn't she harassing me?  Wasn't she guilty of soliciting on company property, huh, huh?

One day a couple of employees from the owner's other store had come by to talk with him.  I just happened to be nearby and overheard the conversation.  They were unhappy with the way a co-worker was acting, and it sounded like she was indeed being quite difficult to work with.  He listened to what they had to say and gave them hugs and said he would take care of it, no worries.  It all seemed a little weird, but interesting.

Maybe I was just too busy working to really think about what all this meant.  One day I looked up and realized I was pretty much the only one working alone.  Everyone else was in little groups discussing endlessly how they were going to arrange the merchandise.  Fine for me because I was getting my displays up faster.  I got lots of compliments on how my section was coming together.  When we wrapped everything up last night I felt a real sense of satisfaction and completion.  Like...my work here is done...and why would I want to stay through grand opening, and have to run a cash register, and be their little do-flunky salesperson grubbing for full time hours, and having co-workers try to sabotage me?

I came home last night really feeling torn about it.  I kept telling myself, really, why not just give it a chance, if it doesn't work out, what the hell, you just move on.  No biggie.  I kept telling myself, they are nice people, the owner seems like a really decent guy, it will be fine.  And I start having this HUGE anxiety attack.  I actually broke down sobbing over it.  I couldn't go to sleep.  I couldn't think straight.  My mind just kept going round and round.  Every instinct I was having was telling me, DON'T go back to this place.  But when you work in retail, all the BS policies are just a given, and it seems like a one in a million chance to work for a real person with compassion and ethics, instead of the distant uncaring "corporate office".

So I kept arguing with myself about it.  I thought, how can I justify quitting when I don't even know yet how it's going to turn out?  I finally went to sleep, but the first thought in my mind when I woke up was again, DON'T go to work today!  Don't go don't go don't go.  It was like a smoke alarm going off in my head.  I couldn't even think straight.  I finally got dressed in a hurry and made myself get in the car.

When I got there I know I didn't look happy.  The owner noticed and was really concerned about my feelings, kept asking me if I was okay, did I need anything.  Made me feel even more guilty for wanting to quit.  I thought, now how can I put a damper on his big day opening his new store, just because I don't feel like being here today?  So I tried to just suck it up and stop acting like a big baby, if nothing else, it's just one day of being aggravated or bored to death with my job, and then I never have to come back again if I don't want to.

Then the owner called everyone up front for a meeting.  I am thinking, okay, typical silly morning huddle.  We had one straggler, the assistant manager didn't come up at first.  He kept yelling for her and insisting that she come.  I am like, what's her problem?  Finally she gets there with a look on her face about like I was feeling.  And then he said something I never expected in my wildest anxiety attack.  He said, before we open the store, let's all join hands for a morning prayer.

I couldn't believe this was happening!  Absolutely couldn't believe it!  At work!  At WORK!  Being asked to PRAY at WORK?!?!  WHAT?!?!  I didn't have the slightest inkling that this was going to happen.  I didn't even know these people were religious.  He never said anything about it before he hired me.  No one ever said this is a christianity based business.  No one ever said anything like, hey we like to start our mornings with a prayer, but you don't have to join in if you don't want to.  It was just assumed that we would all participate.

He even ended it with saying, we ask in the name of Jesus Christ.  Well I have my own beliefs about Jesus, and I'm sure it's not even close to the what the owner believes in or was trying to invoke.  And what if someone there happened to be Jewish, or Muslim, or who knows what else?  No one should even have to say, hey I have a different belief.  It shouldn't even be an issue.

I didn't want to be rude, so I went along with it.  Afterwards they all started picking on the assistant manager - dare I say, harassing her? - for not having a smile on her face.  They were obviously making her uncomfortable, so I guess it was indeed harassment.  Unless you think that she was harassing them by having the wrong expression on her face.  She finally said, look, I just didn't want to be part of that prayer, I don't do that, I'm not religious.  I asked her if we are going to have to do this every day, and she said, I hope not!  At that point I lost patience, those hot little wires crossed in my head, and my mouth started going.  I said I would NOT be okay with that.  She suggested that I go take a break and cool off.

So while I am in the break room trying to calm down, two different co-workers come in and try to counsel me on my problem.  One of them is the annoying money-collection lady, and she just keeps standing there waiting for me to spill my guts.  I had to finally snap at her to get her to go away (oh no, I harrassed her!).  Then the owner walks in and starts apologizing for what happened, and being sooo nice, once again I feel guilty for getting upset.  He says he respects everyone's beliefs, he loves and respects everyone no matter what, and he is just so sorry for offending me, and that the prayer was just about his own personal beliefs and was not meant to reflect on anything else that was going on.

Then he wanted to HUG me.  He turned it all around on me like there must be something horribly wrong with me that I needed help with.  Because I already looked "sad" when I came in to work that morning.  For the rest of the morning he kept showing all this concern for my feelings, and hugging me, and asking me if there was anything he could do for me.  I was starting to wonder if he was just trying to be charitable, or get in my pants.  It can go either way with these religious types.  Either way I was definitely NOT interested.  But this is the man who is signing my paycheck, so I can't lose my temper just yet.

They didn't have any actual work for me to do!  Just stand around and greet customers and ask if they need help.  By the time they got to my area they had already been greeted at least 10 times so I didn't see the point in it.  I was pacing around and around bored to death, and calculating how many people they would have to cut from payroll to keep this place running, because so far payroll was outweighing sales by a ton.  I could feel my usefulness slipping away with every step I took, and every beaming smile I failed to offer, and every hug I recoiled from.  I could feel them looking at me like I had some kind of problem, and it was true, I had lost all common sense.

When I took my next break, my head suddenly cleared.  I couldn't get out of there fast enough.  I yanked off my nametag and apron, clocked out and started heading for the door.  I said, I'm leaving.  They just mumbled some pleasantries at me as if they didn't understand what I said.  I dropped my stuff in front of them like it was burning my hands and went to get the rest of my company property (a shirt) out of the car.  When I came back with it they sent someone out the door to meet me like I couldn't be allowed back in the store!  I made sure they gave me my check too, and put it straight in the bank.

I know this is a long story, for just a few short hours of my life, but it has really freaked me out.  It's been awhile since I have been seriously whacked by christians like this.  My instincts were absolutely right in telling me that my time with this job was over yesterday and there was no need to go back today.  But at least I had the chance to find out for sure what I was feeling so much anxiety about!

Re: Creepy job experience

I might suggest you go to college and study english. You would make a good writer--you have passion. I don't think retail will suit you. Old ladies come in and complain just about everything imaginable. Then they want to report anyone that doesn't cater to them to the manager. I think this new company is preparing a staff for the daily grind. You sound much more independent and creative. Better luck maybe with a smaller company.

I can see that too, Pamelajean, she would make a great designer.

Re: Creepy job experience

I agree with everyone above, you seem very creative, and a good writer.  Seems like your intuition was YELLING at you.  Its hard when everyone around you seems warm and fuzzy, but your mind and body are screaming, ALERT, ALERT! Chalk it up to experience, and listen to your intuition next time, even if its only a subtle hint at first.

Re: Creepy job experience

The redeeming factor you can take away from this is that your intuition is operating perfectly, and that you know how to listen to it.  In a way, this situation taught you a lesson that's much more valuable than your paycheck could ever be!  It's good that you followed it through, because if you had simply listened to your intuition and not gone to work, you would never have known how right it was.

I work for an openly Christian company, which is odd considering my Pagan bent.  They know I'm not Christian, and in fact I'm the only non-Christian working for them.  Fortunately I telecommute and am a couple of hundred miles away.  The few times I go in for meetings and parties I use their prayer time as an opportunity to closely inspect my shoes.  Most of the time, however, I'm at home doing my own thing, not being bothered by them at all.  If it were any different, I wouldn't be able to stomach it.

Athenais, you are indeed a good writer.  However, I would like to add that going to college to learn how to do something you already do well could be redundant.  I write for a living and I have never as much as darkened the doorway to the halls of higher learning!  It's not every day that someone can move ahead without doing time in college, but it CAN work.  I don't think you'll ever be happy in retail.

Besides, it seems to me that design is more your thing.  You mentioned that your displays were complimented and commented on, and it sounds as though you get into the "zone" when you're working on them.  There are people who do nothing but design store displays, and I believe some of them may be freelance.  Have you considered making this your specialty?

Athenais,

HUGS!  *****  I quit so many jobs when I was 18 -22 or so, and for years I had that programming in my head where I'd be struggling with myself about "What's wrong with me?"  But my intuition was always right about situations that weren't good for me.  It's amazing how our nervous system KNOWS when we shouldn't be somewhere.

Congratulations for trusting yourself, and lots of good energy to you as you make plans to do something new.

PS  I've always been this weird mixture of Gnostic Christian and pagan chick, and I'd also get very creeped out in forced religious situations....like the Jesus I connect with and learn from doesn't seem to have much to do with THEIR Jesus! smile  I've never found that connection to that great teacher in church or in any of the cult-like doctrine that has become associated with Christianity.  There have been times when I wanted to "belong" for the fellowship that others within Christianity seem to have, but it always seems like the worst cult to me, and I'm physically allergic to it! It's like I get a full body creepout around that stuff, much like the reaction you described!

It's very important to maintain your own individual connection with Spirit, or with even the great unknowing (as with atheism,) and to honor your own personal truth above all else.  It sounds like the assistant manager there was also having a really tough time with everything. She knew the score!  Kudos to both of you for navigating through it all.

LOL...Yeah that's exactly how it was feeling...like I was being indoctrinated into a cult!  But what really creeped me out more than anything was that this guy was using his "religion" as an excuse to make physical contact.  Like once he established that he is a "christian", suddenly it is okay for him to put his hands on me, because it's all in the spirit of brotherly love.  Lines were being crossed on so many levels, it made my head spin.

I grew up with everyone around me forcing their religion on me so I have a really low tolerance for this kind of crap anyway.  I normally can pick up on it immediately, before someone even starts talking about their beliefs, I know it's coming, and I dodge it.  But I didn't expect it to happen at a job, that's a first for me.  That guy is just asking to be sued.  It might be completely normal in his own church for people to hug each other all the time, but I know other christians who believe physical contact of any kind is sinful outside of marriage.  Same religion, completely different beliefs.  There are too many variations between denominations to bring christianity into a secular setting.

I agree...and I would still be wondering what all the anxiety was about if I hadn't gone back.  If a company tells you up front that they have a religious affiliation, it's different, as long as they don't require you to participate in their rituals.

I went to college for a year, and I would rather gouge my eyes out than go back.  I went there to be a piano major, but I ultimately wanted to study music composition.  I was self-taught and had no idea how to cope with taking lessons, and no one knew how to teach me, so it was a total disaster.  People always told me I should switch my major to english because that was a subject where I could perform more like the little trained monkey that they wanted me to be.  And I stopped loving music because it wasn't fun anymore.

None of you here could have known any of that.  I appreciate the compliments on my writing, but it's not something I love doing.  I don't have the temperament to be a writer, or a college student either.  You should hear me tell my crazy work stories in person, it's probably a lot more entertaining.  I sure use more colorful language!  But there is a point where I get so fired up, I won't quit talking, so you are probably better off just getting it in print lol

Yes I tend to have those full body reactions to strange energies a lot.  I will get strong, overwhelming physical impulses to run away.  And if it feels GOOD to be somewhere I will be almost jumping for joy.  Sometimes I will know that it feels good NOW but sense that there is a wall of resistance somewhere in the near future.

Well I am 28, and I have walked out of a LOT of jobs over the years.  I have never seriously regretted quitting a job, and I've often regretted not quitting sooner.  But I feel like I'm getting too old to keep doing this.  I want to get settled into something so I can focus more on other things in my life.

Lately it feels like the energies in the world keep shifting so much that nothing can stay settled at all, everything is just temporary.  As soon as things settle just a tiny bit there is another surge and things shake up and go all over the place again.  I used to have a hard time finding another job when I quit one, sometimes it would take several months.  But lately they keep coming up one after another like little stepping stones.  A few months here, a few weeks there.  I am starting to worry that I will forget where I'm supposed to go when I leave for work every day.

Thank you all for your comments and kind thoughts smile

Re: Creepy job experience

Congratulations on getting out of there Athenais; as mentioned above it's good to be reminded once in a while that your intuition is fully intact and that you're paying attention.  I'm highly sensitive to surrounding energies in my immediate situation too (the "you need to get out of here NOW" impulse has actually saved my life on several occasions, and I learned to trust my instincts about this at a pretty young age), so I know that creepy feeling all too well.  Never pleasant when it happens though.  Of course, those opposite occasions (with the good energies) are bliss indeed!  If only those would be the norm, heh. smile

Wow, can I definitely sympathize with this one!  The ambient energy wave rollercoaster seems to be speeding up very noticably now.  Only a few short years ago I was one of those guys who could carefully lay out plans spanning months or years into the future, and follow them fairly closely with good results, rolling with changes and adapting without screwing up the general direction of things.  But over the past year or so, and particularly the past few months, that's progressed from being a bit tougher than before, then to being extremely difficult, and now it's almost downright impossible.  I've moved over to living in a mode less dependent on planning and more in the "now", partially from voluntarily choice (being Present has so many spiritual benefits), but also simply because living in the Past or Future is becoming increasingly difficult.  It's like the timelines are starting to become all one big pool... there aren't any roads anymore, just a big ocean with waves that change constantly and go in ever direction.

Even though I've managed to hold the same job for the past year or so (giving me some kind of financial foundation to survive), my role within that job has changed all over the place, and the rate of those changes is increasing along with all the other energy shifts.  Yet my job position is one of those that handles those kinds of changes fairly well, reinforcing the idea that I'm exactly where I need to be to withstand this wacky period in time (I know that none of my previous jobs would have withstood shockwaves like this).

I say that because my guess is that even though you're 28 and feel like you're getting too old for this, I'm in my early 30s and I really no longer think there is a "too old" for job jumps as long as you follow your intuition that you're following your path correctly.  If you do that, you'll always be at the job you need to be (even if it's for a very short time just for one specific lesson), whether it's your first job or fifth or 22nd...

Oh, yeah, definitely.  Before I found the right "fit" for me, I jumped all over the place!  In the past, staying at a job for a year was a really long time.  Even now, although I've been in the same industry for 10 years and have worked at my current job for 5, I have a back-up plan just in case things go screwy.  I can never work in an office again, ever, so I'm branching out to do other things so that I can just work for myself if sh*t hits the fan.

Re: Creepy job experience

Hi Athenais,

I had a similar experience at a job once, where just being in the atmosphere of the place was causing me to have a serious allergic reaction, to borrow LM's term.   Every fiber of my being was telling me "GET OUT ... GO!!! GO!!! GET OUT OF HERE!!!"   And yet my "normal rational" mind was questioning that feeling, thinking "why, what the heck is the matter with you?   Things aren't that bad."     And they weren't, on the surface, but part of me KNEW deep down I had to get out of there.   And on the second day of feeling literally physically ill just being in the place, I ended up discussing how I felt with a coworker who was on a similar wavelength (he was big into Rudolf Steiner and metaphysical stuff in general).    He basically told me that I needed to get the hell out of there right away, and having that one other person's opinion confirming what I felt was enough to make me leave that very day, without notice.   Normally I'm totally self-directed and I try to keep myself in tune with my more subtle feelings and impressions about things, but in this case my rational mind was tipping the scale a bit and keeping me from doing what I knew I had to do.    So, in this case, it took a little helpful "nudge" from a third party to help get me back on track.

Interestingly, the coworker to whom I'm referring is not someone who I knew well at all, or with whom I would end up establishing any sort of lasting friendship.  Indeed, we fell out of contact pretty much immediately when I left the job.   But he had made one statement to me once which I still find very interesting:  he had said that he was sure that the only reason he had come to work at that place was to meet me in particular.    This was a rather strange and out-of-place comment on the surface, since as I mentioned we were not good friends and barely knew each other.    But I know from other experiences that sometimes higher positive forces will send an agent into another person's life to help them at a key moment.   Kind of like Clarence the angel in the film It's a Wonderful Life.   But I suspect it doesn't necessarily have to be an angel that's sent in; it could be just another human who's on a spiritual path of their own, and who by successfully accomplishing their given task will move onward and upward in their own journey.

So anyway, I guess the point is that you're not alone in this experience, and it will probably serve you in the long run as a valuable learning experience.   I know mine will for me.

I'm on the same page myself.   I have been moving around a huge amount myself lately (about four relocations in the last 2-3 years), and I've been feeling that each of these been a "stepping stone" for me in various ways, teaching me valuable lessons and giving me experiences that I will benefit strongly from in the future.  Now I'm finally in a place where I think I can rest and settle down for a bit!   But I think this is definitely part of the "shift" or whatever is going on in the universe.   It's quite obvious to me there are LOTS of changes happening right now in the hyper-dimensional environment, and we need to maintain a stronger-than-ever connection to Spirit in order to get through this in a positive way.     A few years ago, right before I began my series of moves, I remember seeing a sign hung up at the local gas station which said "Waves of Change ... Coming Soon."    I think that, too, was a signpost from another level ... one which proved to be quite accurate, from my point of view.
