Topic: "I hate trees," she said.

My new next door neighbor just said something that blew my mind.  I knew she felt this way, but to hear her actually come out and say it just freaked my delicate sensibilities right out.

First of all, you should know I have a glorious specimen of what I believe is an oak (worshiped by the druids), just on the south side of my front yard.  It's an old, old grandmother tree that would take at least three long-armed people to circle.  Maybe even four.  My mother and I were admiring it just yesterday, because it has what looks like "seats" built in, since there are three humongous forks right near the bottom.  This thing HAS to be hundreds of years old.  The previous owners even built up a flower bed around it in a ring, so you can almost see the fairies dancing around it.

So anyway, my neighbor came home today and saw me working in the yard.  Apropos of nothing, she points to Grandmother Tree and says, "I hate trees."  Just like that!  It was like hearing someone say "I hate life," or  "I hate air."  Come to think of it, that's exactly what she was saying, because both life and air depend on trees!  She then went on to discuss how she planned to cut down ALL the trees in her yard-- none of them as big and glorious as Grandmother, but impressive none the less.

Thinking quickly, I refrained from letting her know what I really thought.  Instead, I said, "You know, since you're planning on selling your house soon (affirming the suggestion), it would be in your best interest to leave those trees there.  Ask any real estate agent, and they will tell you that having mature trees on a lot is a BIG bonus."  "Really?" she said, not quite believing that not all people are as anti-tree as she is.  "It's true.  Most people like trees."  She mulled that over, and I could see it made an impression.  Hopefully I saved the trees.

But seriously, WTF?  Does anyone else think it's odd that someone would hate trees?

Re: "I hate trees," she said.

Maybe you should tell her that you hate people who hate trees.
And that you're glad she's moving.
Or you can tell her that I said so.

Re: "I hate trees," she said.

LOL, Tom, don't think I didn't want to say something to that effect!  It just offended me in some way that I can't even explain.  I'm glad she brought it up so I could try to change her mind before she cut the trees down, though.

I'm so glad you found a constructive way (i.e. appealing to her financial greed smile to encourage the woman to keep the trees!

I hate to say it, but my mum is a bit of a tree hater. It comes from her having grown up in Kansas, where it was completely flat.  When she moved to the East she said for years she felt very weird and hemmed in by all the trees, even though she also thought they were pretty.  And it's not that she hates nature, exactly, but.....my dad and I are always shocked at how she can't stand to have bushes or trees growing anywhere near the house.  She gets very creeped out by greenery!

Fortunately, she's never been as wacky as your neighbor, though! smile

What's funny is that I've been planning that response for DAYS.  Weird, huh?  In my original post, I said I had thought quickly, but the truth is I already had that little conversation planned.  That's why it shocked me so much that she just said it... with no preamble.  I thought I'd have to steer the conversation toward her thinking of cutting the trees down, because she had mentioned the first time I met her that she was considering it.  I'd had the thought that, "Boy, it seems like she just hates trees, because she complained about every single one in the neighborhood."  Then she just up and says it.  I wonder if she was responding to a telepathic thought I'd sent her, or if this conversation was "prompted"?

Re: "I hate trees," she said.

Tell her that the trees move around at night when no one is looking.
And they get back into their same places before anyone notices.
They also scratch on your windows and make you think there's a
burglar or rapist around.

Then slap her.

Sorry, lono, I'm on a tear again.  Must be 'cause my moon is approaching

Re: "I hate trees," she said.

How can you hate trees?  Is it because she doesn't like picking up the leaves they drop?  That would make sense, but hating trees themselves doesn't compute.  yikes

Re: "I hate trees," she said.

Guess she hates air as well then? LOL

Re: "I hate trees," she said.

Trees would be symbolic of life, growth, change, and beauty. There are many lonely people--they didn't just fall out of trees--they worked very hard to see life the way they do. Change means getting closer to death, and to facing the illusions. Clouds get people thinking and feeling about daily change, which has no real relativity to their past, but trees are boundary lines and markers of one's life and the marching of time. We know we will see new cloud formations--trees mean years,  decades and centuries of past days of clouds, storms, and memories.

The rich soil of the clouds
                      And the sky
                      Of spring and fall;
                                  Colorful leaves adrift
                      Tossed off great oaks
                      And ancient redwoods
                      By brisk breezes of time
                      Land sleepishly for years;
                      Molting...
                                  Preparing for a new day

Re: "I hate trees," she said.

Wow, hates trees, huh?  I must admit, I get annoyed at the oak trees in my yard that pollinate shitloads, dumps tons of acorns everywhere and leave little stringy things in my gutters, but cut them down?  Some people are so egocentric and ignorant.
Lono, I think you handled that lady in a perfect way. smile

Re: "I hate trees," she said.

What's funny (and I didn't think of this until later that day), the trees seem to hate her back.  This neighborhood had a couple of huge storms recently, one in June and another big one in the winter.  My tree-LOVING neighbor on the other side of me talked about how one of her large, beloved trees that she had planted herself uprooted in her front yard.  She was devastated... but noted that rather than crushing her house (which it could very well have done), it politely laid down where it destroyed nothing.  She was happy to note that it's now coming back and is a strong sapling.

My tree-hating neighbor, however, had a limb crush her patio-- and yet another one damaged her car!  Lots of limbs went down all over, but neither my house (which wasn't mine at the time) or the tree-loving-neighbor house sustained ANY damage at all.

Reminds me of the man who hated squirrels.  I, of course, love squirrels, so to hear about this man also blew my mind.  He waged war on them day and night.  Guess what?  He's now dead, but the squirrels are still attacking his house, tearing up the patio furniture on his widow's deck, etc.  Beware what you wage war on, folks...

My thoughts exactly.  I've seen this type of thing too many times to not think there's a connection.  This is especially true where Mother Nature is involved.

Re: "I hate trees," she said.

If I want a spiritual quickie I go to the park near where I live and go up to the massive trees living there. I swear touching them and looking up at them is like meeting a god.  I'm a tree person like to talk to them they know a lot. Some people don't talk to the trees therefore they see them as something that is in the way. I still mourn a tree that was by the community mail box. The people who owned the property near it cut it down I would talk to it everday when I got my mail. Imagine the horror I felt when it was there one day and gone the next I didn't even see them cut it down. It was like huh? Where is my friend!
