Topic: Sick Sad World

An article I came across while checking my yahoo account this morning:

BEIJING (Reuters) - Scientists in eastern China say they have succeeded in controlling the flight of pigeons with micro electrodes planted in their brains, state media reported on Tuesday.

Scientists at the Robot Engineering Technology Research Centre at Shandong University of Science and Technology said ther electrodes could command them to fly right or left or up or down, Xinhua news agency said.

"The implants stimulate different areas of the pigeon's brain according to signals sent by the scientists via computer, and force the bird to comply with their commands," Xinhua said.

"It's the first such successful experiment on a pigeon in the world," Xinhua quoted the centre's chief scientist, Su Xuecheng, as saying.

Su and his colleagues, who Xinhua said had had similar success with mice in 2005, were improving the devices used in the experiment and hoped that the technology could be put into practical use in future.

The report did not specify what practical uses the scientists saw for the remote-controlled pigeons.

Quite the scare tactic, isn't it?

Re: Sick Sad World

Oh Hell yikes That is just crazy!

It reminds me of something that happened to me last year, during a time of heavy spiritual awakening.  I was sitting in my garage having a cigarette with my husband (he saw it too, so I'm not crazy). I guess it was in the fall sometime. I had been kind of communicating with the animals that visit my backyard. I have a mini-habitat set up for them. Several times, some of the animals would come into the garage through the door. I think it was on accident sometimes, but not always.  They usually will come and tell me when their food is gone. A few birds, squirrels, and the neighborhood chipmunk had all come in at one time or another.

Well, this one day, we're sitting there and this HUGE ass pigeon comes strolling in!! Man, that really freaked me out. I had never seen a pigeon in my area before, EVER.... This dude was big and he just came walking right into my garage like he lived there! Once he was in, he stayed for a while. When we would look at him and talk to him, he would duck his head down into his neck...you know, like he thought he was hiding or something! This guy was most definitely sent to my house. I have no doubt about it now. He had tags on both legs and he was checking out my garage and me, just like he was recording everything around him.

Oh man, did that f*ck with me! I just kept thinking "Well, now they've got me tagged for sure."  He came within three feet of me...close enough to see whatever he wanted to see, before leaving the garage after 15 minutes of visitation/recording time.

The screwed up part is that ever since his visit, I have noticed an increase in air traffic around/above my house. Coincidence? I think not....

Well, it sure scared the hell out of me!!  Actually not too bad, though. I'm not one to get too overly freaked out.  It was just so bizarre.

Re: Sick Sad World

mad
I remember on a science show in Australia they showcased a brain implant in rats that pretty much did the same thing.  It stimulated parts of the rats brain to feel something on the side of its face, and take that as a cue and turn.  When it did, it got a pleasure message delivered to its brain through the same device.

It was dressed up to look like a benevolent scientific advancement a la "these would have been really useful sifting through the debris of the twin towers...".  But I can't think of any good hearted and practical use for such a device.  And this is just my opinion but I believe that the brains of living things should never be messed with.

Freaked me out for a long time.

If that freaked you out, this certainly will:

Re: Sick Sad World

uh, russians sustaining a cut off dogs head with an artificial heart and lung system, (it reacts to the environment!) basically sums up the area of research on that video tongue

Finished watching, and they revived whole dogs after 10-15 minutes of death with this machine of theirs...

Re: Sick Sad World

Ummmmmmmmm I'm glad I asked and didn't just press play willy nilly.

Won't be watching that.

Edit:  Are you pissing in my pocket, or are you serious?  Sorry, I find it a bit hard to believe.  But I'm still not going to watch it just in case.

Certainly takes the cake for horror-science.

Thanks smile
