Topic: Work sucks!

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but...

WORK SUCKS!!!

I'm my mid 20's, and have managed to live my adult life without hardly working. I have in fact had success making money playing music on the street. But that's slowly died down so I've also lived with aunts, girlfriends, and good friends who have taken me in. I've recently decided to get my foundation a little stronger and become more independant, so I've been doing some work so that I can pay rent and have my own individual space.

I'm doing temporary promotional gigs that I find on craigslist, so it's not even bad work. It generally pays pretty well ($15+), and the gigs never last more than a few days so it's always changing. Still, I am amazed at how it affects me.

I just got done doing a four day stint. The changes it has produced in me are incredible.

When I try to untangle my curly hair clumps come out of my scalp... no wonder so many men are bald. Today waiting for a train (commuting is perhaps worse than working. It takes a lot of time, you don't get paid for it, and you are surrounded by a bunch of other people who are also stressed out) I was looking at a noosepaper I found and the thing was shaking... by my nervous arms, of course.

It's friday night and I don't have any work scheduled for now and I'm still finding it so hard to be present. I just want to get drunk or go to bed. I don't really want to go do anything, but I probably will. And it will probably involve me getting drunk. Funny how working drives me to drink.

Today on the way to work I was reading some sufi stuff, which talks a lot about quitting the working world. I guess first millenium middle-east wasn't much different than modern America. I was thinking about how it is no wonder that most people are so disconnected from a higher reality. Looking around on the train I could see the droning thoughts buzzing around in people's heads, and in my own... I saw how working can facillitate such a condition. How can one be here and now when 10 hours a day are spent on tasks that have no meaning to one's spirit??!

To any of you on this forum that work full-time and manage to still be tuned in, striving to find 'reality', I commend you.

Me, I'm gonna keep my workweek to under 20 hours. I'd much, much, much rather be poor than work any more than that. Maybe once I get a bit of cash together I can be like Gurdjieff and buy some flippin' rugs!

Re: Work sucks!

I want to add after about fifteen minutes of thinking, "what the f*ck should I do with my evening now??"

I feel like I want to FIGHT. I want to BREAK SHIT. I want to throw my fists at something and grunt and snarl.

I've very rarely felt this way before. I am so distracted and nothing seems interesting to me other than sleep. But it's only nine. I don't want to sleep. It's friday f*cking night. I'm single. So maybe I should go find some anonomous girl to f*ck! ??

If I had a TV I would watch it. That's how bad it is.

I can telll I'm getting drunk, so I'd better stop posting.

Re: Work sucks!

Reminds me of an old Twilight Zone episode. The one with the burnt out executive on the commuter train. "Willoughby. Next stop, Willoughby".

Re: Work sucks!

Aw hell. It's my thread. I'll post more. Dudge does it...! wink

I thought of a word for the world we live in:

BULL-archy

bullarchy.

Hear that clangy sound? That's the sound of a word being coined. For the six thousandth time, probably.

Re: Work sucks!

Maybe the new moon is "tugging on your head" and amplifying your dissatisfaction with things. People tend to get disaffected, pissy, depressed, disgruntled, oversensitive, and rebellious around the new moon. I've seen it happen too many times to count. For what it's worth. Below is the moon chart for this month. Gray area signifies window of influence for the new moon. Saturday is the 17th.

Re: Work sucks!

Funny, cos I just got a fulltime 8.30 - 5 job for the first time in 13 years and I am loving it.  LOVING it.  It is early days of course but it is The Perfect Job for me and it came at The Perfect Moment.  Natch.  wink  Thirteen years was not too long to wait, afterall.  Thought so.

The new mooners are out and about and certainly having a go.  I have a bruise to prove it. (I'm fine, Darth just made me laugh lol:lol:).

My universe is rearranging itself right now before my very eyes.  Montalk is right about knowing what you are really dealing with at any moment.  Some of the stuff that has been happening to people around me is outrageous.  And with Mercury in retrograde too...   yikes

Hi free*world, that's really funny, because I also just signed on for "The Perfect Job" for me, after a few years of not having one ... and it came at "The Perfect Moment" too!   I'll share the story briefly as it is appropriate to this thread. Mencius, I hope the following might serve as a helpful clue to you:

Just over a month or so ago, things were starting to get a bit close to the edge for me financially.  I was becoming concerned about what I would do, since I didn't have anything in particular lined up and I needed to come up with something rather quickly.    One day around this time, I had a synchronistic urge to go back and read "The Way Out."  This was a short booklet I had gotten (courtesy of Montalk) addressed to any people having concerns about money, consisting of basic instructions on keeping out any negative thoughts.  More importantly, however, it instructed that the reader ought to repeat the following on a daily basis:

"God loves me, and cares for me, and is giving me all good things.

I love God, and think His thoughts, and do only the things He wants me to do."

The book suggested practicing this for at least a month.   Within a couple of days of starting to do so, I found the online posting for a job that appeared to be a perfect match for me.  I applied, did some required testing, and consciously intended that I would get this job, AND get offered the highest possible salary, if it was within the will of the Divine, and in the best interests of all.  Within the month it was confirmed that the job was mine,  exactly as I had intended and asked for.

Not bad.  I'd suggest focusing your attention on getting yourself in "right standing" with God (whatever you conceive Him/Her/It to be), and maybe downloading a copy of this text and following the suggestions you find therein.   I did and am quite satisfied with the results.     It's one of those times where my intellect is saying "That MUST have just been a coincidence!" ... but I've now had way too many "woo-woo" experiences in my life to know better.   It was no coincidence: it was the Spirit at work.    Pretty powerful stuff, it seems to me. smile

Re: Work sucks!

Some people are just not cut out for work, Mencius.  wink  That's something I've learned over the years by watching people.  A lot can do it...a lot even enjoy it....but then there's this group of people who just can't seem to wrap their minds around the whole 8-5 thing, complete with commuter time and bosses and rules and regulations.  It's usually the artist/musician types, from what I've seen.   Work seems to crush their soul and they definitely don't seem cut out for the mainstream world.  The trick is to take your musician skills and turn it into something more.  Look at all the possible options available to you, don't limit yourself to just thinking you can only play gigs you find listed on the 'net.  There's probably a lot that a musician can do.  If you're good at whatever it is you play, you can give lessons to others.  That's another option for income.  Where we live in Charlottesville (VA) there's the downtown area that's riddled with artists, musicians and artisans selling their crafts.  They also advertise at all the downtown hotspots with fliers for classes they give.  Everything from musical instruments to acting classes to particular craft skills to learning particular foreign languages and cultural stuff.   Just everything you can think of.  They not only sell their own wares, skills and knowledge, but they make money by teaching others.

So, that's a starting point anyway. Brainstorm and see what other options you have for how to turn your musician skills into more money.  Expand your horizons.

BTW....the new moon thing seems to be in effect this week with regards to work.  I've been at this particular temp job now since last May, and this week all of a sudden I was **HATING** this job with a PASSION.  To the point where I was seriously going to quit.  !!!!  Just call up my temp company and be all, "Get me out of here!  I hate this place!  It's stupid!  I don't know why I've stayed here so long!  They're closing on April 30th anyway so it doesn't matter, I'm want to duck out early and get some other job!!!"  I was just really pissed at my job for the stupidest reasons, and it made no logical sense really.  My feelings felt really irrational, so I didn't act on them.   I couldn't figure out what the problem was.  It wasn't PMS wink don't think it was biorhythms related, but lo and behold....turns out we're in a new moon period.  New moons are all about becoming disaffected and disgruntled, wanting to quit things and stomp out, teeth gritted, hitting people, throwing a temper tantrum and so on.  big_smile

Hang in there....and brainstorm your other options.  And if it's going to take awhile for something to come together, find work in a place that's more compatible with who you are.  Scrap the corporate world, it's just going to suck you life force away from what you've already described.  There are a lot of other options out there.

Re: Work sucks!

Thanks for the input, friends.

I definately feel the new moon energy. Two nights ago I had inexplicably horrid dreams. I was hanging out with extended family members, and the whole time I was very upset. I tried desperately to cry, but my eyes had to teers. Probably some loosh, though... smile I've also noticed it with friends.

The job is over for me, my scheduled days are through. They called me this morning asking if I could work today and I very happily said 'no thanks!'

Lyra, you are right. I am one of those people not cut out for the work world. I've never held a job for more than two months. I can't stand having a boss and having all those rules. It really pains me to be subservient to someone else that I don't respect and didn't really choose. Thanks for your encouragement to make money in more appropriate ways. I have oft considered lessons, but I've never really wanted to do it because I'm not terribly commited geographically, and I'd hate to string people along. But that's changing...

Well, its' a warm sunny day. I'm off to breakies... smile

Re: Work sucks!

Hey Mencius- just thought I'd add- it's only work if you aren't doing what it is you want to be doing. As much as I have struggled with this subject and absolutely agree that work does suck, I also believe a normal regimented schedule for most people definetely reduces the random chaos of everyday existence. For those types, the lack of a schedule threatens to throw their whole life into disarray, and I mean not the robotic live-to-work people either, this does happen to awake and aware folk also. Anyway- you'll find it, and you'll know when you have- my best wishes.                           J

Happy to have been a part

Re: Work sucks!

I've never been really one for work...I can do it, but I find that it needs to be doing something creative that uses alot of different areas of my brain and spirit for true inspiration to be able to come through. I've worked many 8 hour shifts, at a place where I was making food while singing...man, I picked the weirdest job. It was my first job, and I stayed there for a little too long. I'm currently jobless, (though going to college is a quasi-job) but I'm really not into the whole "service" industry kind of thing...I'd rather do something that's beyond making basically pre-prepared food, to something that involves my creative capacities and really makes a dent on the minds of people I interact with, directly or indirectly. We'll all find our place, rest assured...it just comes down to how fast you find it. Use your imagination, draw a mindmap of what you really want, and think of the different ways you can achieve your goals...trying to find the connections that will focus your efforts and make it clear to yourself that "This is what I want...this is what I'm gonna get"
I'm in that situation in college right now as a second year student without an idea in hell of what I'm going to major in. But the way I look at things, is that we're always given at some point in our lives, maybe in the depths of wandering around aimlessly, where a path unfolds before us. The task you are endowed with is to put forth the effort to travel along such a path...but it all comes down to knowing that everyone in the end will find their niche.
I know faith is a loaded word, but I think so many of us are afraid of what's happening, of what path to follow, and whether we'll make it, that having faith in the divine workings of the Great Spirit is a pre-requisite before one can truly embark upon the road of truth that many of us have chosen to do.
Huh, that graph is interesting montalk. I'm feeling particularly "up" right now...

Re: Work sucks!

I've quit working for other people, maybe cuz I'm the artsy type;) lol. I've had many jobs, some may think that I'm 'flighty' or not responsible or the like, but I view myself as enjoying life! lol. I love to sit down and draw home plans, so I went to college for two years in architecture (my professor loved my work), only to realize that it is 'drawing' that is my passion! The two years really weren't a waste tho, for I had to take some art classes that I really enjoyed. So I'm happy! If anyone cares to view my artwork they should visit my website, my drawings are listed under 'pics'. I've been doing mostly portraiture, but am venturing into my own works.

Re: Work sucks!

This is from someone who's been working regularly for over 20 years, now supporting a wife and 2 kids.  I imagined that my wife (of 10 years, very well educated) would also get a job but it's too d*mn comfortable for her to let me work so for some reason she can never find a job ...

Work is a scary thing.  The job is never secure.  If you don't follow the rules you can get fired.  Even if you follow the rules you can get fired.  Getting fired is very scary because then you have the even harder job of finding the next job, which you must begin immediately.  The main emotional undercurrents at work are boredom and fear.

Why boredom?  Because you have to turn your mind off at work, yet keep some part running to do the job.  So a large part of the mind is mainly unoccupied, or occupied with office politics which are never pleasant and often downright degrading.  The jobs themselves are generally OK but the employment environment is typified by the elements I described above.  Don't think that being a boss makes this easier.  Then you have politics from above and politics from below, both, to deal with.  It was beyond my skills at the time to handle this and I found a different path.

God is a better boss!!!  One doesn't need to play politics with God.  That's why we all try to escape the political environment for something real.  To repeat, the jobs I've had are OK things to do, some can be quite interesting, and my current boss is a very hands-off kind of guy 90% of the time.  But there's that pervasive employment environment that repeatedly intrudes on my freedom.

It seems that in my case, God's way of having me make money is to have me face employment for many years.  I guess I've gotten better at some of the games and make less mistakes than I used to.  Maybe that's a part of what I was supposed to learn in this life.  I remember when I was very bad at the political side, when I just started working and had a summer job.  I was working in a mushroom canning factory with one or two other guys, and we decided to go out on strike for higher pay just like the big unions did then.  Well haha the big unions could get away with it (until Reagan vs. the air traffic controllers, anyway) but we couldn't.  We were replaced and ... I had to scramble to find another job!  Now maybe I've learned something about objectivity in all my years of forced employment, but it does seem like I waste a fair amount of my life worrying about it and doing stupid tricks just to survive as an employee.

As I've said, I'm supporting other people so I can't just up and quit, and I expect I have quite a few more years of the same sort of game-playing ahead.  I'm in an unhappy mood about it at the moment, but the unhappy moods about this are quite common.  So that's my perspective.

Re: Work sucks!

I think the worst part about work for me is that I "burn up all my thinking ability" at work.  The only times it seems I can do some real research and genuflection is on Sunday, or Saturday.  But by the weekend I am so burned out from work like Mencius describes, all I feel like doing is getting drunk.  When I get drunk I am so messed up from that I am absolutely useless at doing anything for days.

The nice thing though is that I have very few expenses and  pretty high paying job, so if I ever do find what I want to do with my life I have a decent savings built up to move me in that direction.

I have mentioned here before, but I work at an engineering firm that reminds me of a commericial farm.  You have floors full of rows and rows of cubicle's, resembling the endless stalls where cattle are strapped to milking machines and milked for all they are able to produce.  The main difference I see between cubicles and prison cells is that people in cubicles have the illusion of freedom, that they can exit their cubicle at will while a cell has a door barring the occupant in.  In reality both the cubicle and the cell perform the same function to lock the individual in, and keep them in order.

I think the worst part about what I do is I see it as pointless.  I think I could get excited about something cutting edge or beneficial to humanity, but my product is neither.  Oh well, done venting.

Re: Work sucks!

In my experience there are no perfect jobs, but if you are persistent and/or lucky you can find a job that is perfect just for what you need right now.  It will last as long as it's meant to last and then it is time to move on.  If you don't move on when that time is up, you are just going to make yourself suffer.  Sometimes I have taken bad jobs because it was more money or had benefits, and ended up just hating every day of my life because of it.  It's NOT worth it.  And I can't emphasize that enough.  Granted you have to be able to tell the difference between being in the wrong job, or just having a bad day.  There are always going to be days when you don't feel like being at work because the weather is pretty, or co-workers are being annoying, or whatever, and that's just part of life.  But if you feel like every day there is bad, or you hate getting up in the morning because of your job, or you can't enjoy your free time because you can't get your job out of your mind, it's time to look for something else.

I have had a lot of different jobs but all of them have been in retail or in some other way working with the public, and all have been lower-level, low paying jobs.  So what I say is just based on that kind of work experience.  But for me what it comes down to, is whether a job gives me enough of what I want, for what I have to put up with.  Taking everything into consideration, pay, benefits, perks, schedule, etc.  They are always going to expect too much and give as little as possible.  So you just do what you can and let the rest go.  It's not worth worrying about.  Especially if you are making less than $20,000 a year, there is NO reason in the world why you should have to suffer for your job.  Let the people who are making more money than you stress over it, because that's what they are there for.

I like to work, because the rest of my life has been so bizarre, it's really soothing sometimes to just do mundane tasks.  Right now I am working 2 part-time jobs, soon to be 3, and I am finding that I really like it a lot better than trying to just work one job full-time.  I feel better knowing that if one job doesn't work out, I wouldn't be completely out of work.  Plus it can give you an edge if your employer knows that they are not your sole source of income.  Best of all I don't have to get too deeply involved with any one particular environment or group of people.
