Topic: What is the proper diet for humans, Raw Food?

Doesn't it make sense to only eat what mother nature provides?  Fruits, Greens, Some Veggies/Nuts/Seeds/ Animal Products.

If you can't eat it in it's natural form because it's too hard or poisonous (Potatos, Rice, Oats, Corn, Some Flowers, etc...) then we should'nt be eating it most likely in my opinion!

Clearly if we all were stranded on an island with no match sticks, we would have to eat this way....so does that make it the proper diet for humans? To eat things in their natural raw form, if edible?

Wild animals only eat raw foods unless humans come along and start feeding them...

Also when you cook food it loses it's "lifeforce" as well as important enzymes, and nutrients.  Where did we ever go wrong and start cooking food? and start making complicated dishes that taste good, but do nothing for us nutritonally...

Re: What is the proper diet for humans, Raw Food?

Here's a great free ebook by Weston Price called:  A Comparison of Primitive and Modern Diets and Their Effects

http://journeytoforever.org/farm_librar … cetoc.html

It basically talks about how your native diet is the proper way to eat...he shows picture proof of the difference between people who eat thier primitive diet vs those who were raised on modern diets.  It's amazing how their facial structure, jaw structure and noses look completely different from their ancestry.  Sadly I don't know my native diet, or my heritage very well to know what my primitive diet might of been like.

Re: What is the proper diet for humans, Raw Food?

For the record, those primitive diets WAP studied were largely cooked.  Humans have had fire for hundreds of thousands of years, and we have used it to cook our food for as long.  I have a feeling that is enough time for our bodies to adapt.  I would agree that most people could use more raw food in their diets, as it does have a certain vitality that cooked food lacks.  On the other hand, it is more difficult to digest (and those who claim otherwise, on the basis of food enzymes and such, are listening to their minds, not their bodies), the cloud of gas following any strict raw foodie should be enough to demonstrate this to anyone.

Recently I have really begun to like fermented foods though.  They have the advantage of being easy to digest while still containing the vitality and living essence of raw (read living) foods.

Lifeforce I can't argue with, you definitely lose some in cooking.  Enzymes and nutrients are more of a mixed bag.  The VAST majority of enzymes present in your food are destroyed by stomach acid before they reach the intestine.  Also, your digestive tract produces far more enzymes than are present in the food in the first place, so that line of argument never held much water to me.
As far as nutrients go, while some are broken down in cooking, just as many are made far more readily available.  If you are eating strictly raw foods, you are pooping out more vitamins than you are saving by not cooking (though often different ones).

I think the key here is balance, and more importantly listening to your body and eating what feels right, not what the mind craves.  The more you develop awareness, the easier it is to differentiate bodily desires and mental cravings.  Also, your intention and attention during meal times are IMHO, the most important factor in healthy eating.  With proper attention and awareness, even a massive slurry of corn derivatives (also known as McDonald's) can be a healthful meal (in theory at least, can't say I'm there yet, or at least I'd rather not find out).

"Sadly I don't know my native diet, or my heritage very well to know what my primitive diet might of been like."

Are you of European descent?  I remember he studied some healthy swiss youths whose diet consisted largely of dairy products.  They never brushed their teeth, and even had green slime covering them, yet had perfect dental health and almost no cavities.  Of course, if you go back far enough, everyones ancestors had pretty similar "paleo" diets.  Largely meat/fish/eggs along with green veggies and fruits.  Fermented foods have been an important and revered part of every culinary tradition though, so I strongly recommend "Wild Fermentation" by Sandor Katz.

"Clearly if we all were stranded on an island with no match sticks"

Clearly you haven't studied up on primitive fire making techniques.  Give me a piece of hard wood, a piece of soft wood, a lot of time and motivation (i.e. lack of alternatives) and I will give you fire.  In fact, give me a soda can, chocolate bar, and a sunny day and I will give you fire (well, along with 6 hours and some dry tinder, I suppose).

Even if I ate only raw food, fire keeps everything nice and warm at night.

btw, have you checked out the Weston A Price Foundation (westonaprice.org)?  They have plenty of great info on nutrition.

Okay, I forgot how to look cool and have the link coded into the word.  Anyone care to refresh me?

Re: What is the proper diet for humans, Raw Food?

The simplest easiest way to know you're eating the right diet for you is to listen to your cravings. This is your connection to what you called "Mother Nature". It's how she speaks to you. And you'd be surprised how many times the cravings will lead you to substances like fast food burgers or chocolate cake with chocolate icing, pork marinated in barbecue sauce, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches exclusively for a week...

The mind doesn't understand the value in such things and has so many prejudices against all that is, including what's found here at this level. But Spirit (that which truly gives life to the form) and the body itself are not nearly as biased against modern culture as the mind thinks it should be.

When man stops using his limited mind to determine what nature has already provided ample internal sensors for, he'll be quite surprised to discover how little "nutrition" has to do with health. The innate connection to all that is in each given NOW is remarkable, and the body is not in any way hindered from existing in full health in any surround, except by virtue of the mind that deems itself righteous authority over the body.

We are not slaves to our form. Our bodies are a completely integrated tool for our whole self to navigate this realm. There is no reason to invest so much effort, belief, energy and mental power in maintaining it. In fact the less we focus in that manner, the more likely our health will miraculously begin to improve and maintain itself.

This is just one more area where the mind has taken charge though it has no business claiming authority. It would do well to take a back seat to innate urges, impulses, and cravings, and witness the experience, rather than dictating it.

i disagree...  if this was true, then we wouldnt even have to eat....  i dont disagree that what you say is attainable, but there's no sense in pretending like you have attained that amount of control over your body when you dont.  the control system has set in place hurdle's for us in the realm of nutrition.  our body is deeply connected to our mind for sure, and our mind is deeply connected to our reality.  but unless you are enlightened, you have to eat.  and you are what you eat, that is, your physical body can only create its parts with what you have taken in.

i think it's important to separate the mind from the brain... the brain has cravings...  for example, i quit eating fast foods and had cravings for McDonald's for 4 months... then they subsided...  that was clearly addiction and the cravings had nothing to do with what my soul wanted me to eat.  the brain has been keenly studied by those in power and they have our numbers.

i dont think it helps to stress out about your diet.  you can listen to your inner voice deep down and suppress your brain, i think you know the difference.  if you dont, then you're lying to yourself on deeper levels than you are conscious of or will consciously admit.  IMO anyways ;]

but if you think that diet has nothing to do with health, then you're gonna end up eating like the majority of Americans (who also believe that it has nothing to do with health).

in fact, through fasting, i think all of us can learn how addicted to food we truly are.  it's about will power, to learn to overcome the hurdle's our petty tyrants have placed in front of us.

i think the first thing to do is find out as much as you can about the chemicals you are putting into your bodies, then decide which ones you want and which ones you dont.  personal responsibility is key.  we are responsible for what we eat, we cant say we didnt know what was in it.

peace.

Hmm...I don't know what type of raw food you've been eating, but I have never had a problem digesting raw foods.  The only raw foods that didn't digest fast & gave me gas were nuts/seeds, before I learned that you should sprout them, which helps them digest better!   In fact raw fruits and greens take no longer then an hour to digest on average.  You can find proof of that.  Where as cooked grains, meats takes sometimes up to 6-8 hours to digest.

Most raw foodists smell great.  They don't have nasty smelling armpits or weird body odors that those who eat cooked foods have.  Your body treats cooked food as toxin.  There was a study done on it.  I will have to find it and post it here.

As you get older your enzyme production declines which causes you too look old and aged...most likely due to eating cooked foods your whole life.   Raw foods help replenish your enzyme stores.

Re: What is the proper diet for humans, Raw Food?

The point about the mind witnessing cannot be overstated. There is a focused awareness implied there, though not a control. And learning will inevitably occur with this method. The majority of folks eat without any consciousness involved, and that is not what I was referring to at all.

Indeed, it's a matter of learning to trust life, rather than fighting it. Not many are yet willing to do this, ever fearful of who or what might be out to get them, or that there might actually be something stronger than their spirit/soul that could ever actually overpower or quash the greater self's intent or unending support.

As for not needing to eat at all, there is no sense behind this statement you make that I can see. We are here to partake... of ALL that exists at this level. To discover ourselves as whole once again, amidst the seeming separation universe we created for such discovery. Exploring and learning, growing with and changing... with relish and abandon, in fact. Just because we haven't yet learned how to do so does not negate the validity of the idea. We are explorers by nature, not conquerers. And we are eternal at essence, using a vehicle for exploration that too many have identified as themselves exclusively, forgetting the rest of who they are.

At some point in a life cycle it will become obvious that even in this "what to eat" area, everything starts with the self who chooses... and not the other way around. When the choice is always to distrust or believe in fearful things, indeed body maintenance is as arduous as it appears for most human beings. This is precisely because the body then becomes a battle ground of mind versus nature. The onslaught takes its toll. As long as the mind remains in charge and sees villains, harm and attackers at every turn, the body assaulted by these beliefs must also be maintained through counterbeliefs, in a never-ending struggle for survival and viability.

The alternative is the always available but rarely noticed full support of inherent nature. The key is actually to let go of control, not obtain full control over the body, in order to benefit from the support of inherent nature. Cooperation with nature, rather competing with or conquering it, is the path of more freedom. Less identification with matter and substance and more identification with essence will naturally produce this deep trust of life and nature.

The fastest and easiest path to ending a battle is to stop fighting, not to exert more force. This runs contrary to the tyrant in us all, which is why it's so difficult to actually manage for most, and yet it is the way (witness the US involvement in war and the seeming inability of those in charge to admit defeat or error and retreat). It threatens the mind and ego that take pride in being in control, in being right, in discovering what seem like proper solutions, in being effective and useful.

Letting go seems a threat because it is a step toward those aspects of self losing their value and rightful place in self, as they see it and we've enabled for so long. Habits die hard. But... we are empowered to choose differently, in every moment.

Yeah I tottaly disagree with this.  Listen to your cravings?  Those addicted to CRACK would love your commentary...
"Mother Nature" has nothing to do with guiding you to eat fast food, and man-made cooked shit.  I mean come on...
Why would she guide you away from her precious apples, and juicy plums and into a grocery store near you, where you can find "Man's nature" killing humans like they kill cattle everyday.  Diet is responsbile for what 90% of all diseases in the world...

Problem: most folks would starve. "Natural" foods don't produce as many calories as grains and tubers.

Meat is another problem. Uncooked "natural" meat is loaded with parasites; eat that and you'll get a whole bunch of them. Uncooked fresh-water fish is even worse; their parasites aren't adapted to mammals and will destroy your body in lots of painful ways.

IMO cooking was one of the great inventions. We get nutritious foods from products that wouldn't otherwise be edible.

I appreciate the benefits of certain raw foods. I eat a lot of home-grown sprouts and recommend that everybody try them. But raw food only diets (again, IMO) seem to be more of a cult then a rational way of eating.

We're all butterflies flapping our wings and changing the world.

Re: What is the proper diet for humans, Raw Food?

i dont disagree with you in what you are saying about the mind and the self allowing things to happen and witnessing things...  i dont want to get caught up in semantics, but that's always the case with communication between humans...

the most important thing, as far as im concerned, is to seek your inner nature.  never give in to cravings simply because they are cravings...  while once upon a time, humans could trust their cravings, now is not that time... now is the time that sorts the unconscious from the conscious.  and food is indeed part of that... because the elite ( and im totally satisfied that they know exactly how we work ) use of bad foods to take away nature's nourishments is one of the ways they can harm us without breaking the law of free will...  because we cant deny responsibility for what we eat.

a simple example of this is fluoride... it's been proven to lower IQ's, cause hyperactivity in children (ritalin, anyone?), and hypoactivity in adults and adolescents (sluggishness), and lower memory recall...

while i believe that the power of the mind can overcome these things, we must first be conscious of them...  otherwise we could experience more roadblocks in our path than necessary...

thanks for your wisdom, though.

Re: What is the proper diet for humans, Raw Food?

I grew up on municipal water with fluoride. My toothpaste was fluoridated until my early 40's. Was fluoride a factor in my struggle to wake up consciously? It doesn't seem it was, frankly. Could it be a factor for someone?

Perhaps, and here's how: You discover that fluoride isn't very safe or good for you and you discover it's in your water AND your toothpaste, and you now walk the planet "fluoride afraid". You believe in mankind's limited mind view of what it sees as it studies the effects of fluoride from the outside in (effects seen on an unaware population who also places its faith in science and the human mind, I might add). As a result, each instance of encountering fluoride knowingly or unknowingly is a hit against your health now. Why? Because you attract the damage through your fear. You believe it is harmful to you, so it is.

You've literally disempowered your body's natural ability to meet that contaminant with the inherent strength of its natural integrity by believing your body cannot handle it. Your fear of the fluoride is a belief that it is more powerful than your own inherent health that's built right into your body's cells. Your body complies with your choice because you became conscious of something and made a choice. And that choice was to fear. Freewill is upheld here. By all other intelligent life, including body consciousness.

You can also choose to empower your body by having faith and trust in its inherent ability to face any contaminant with whatever it needs to neutralize that substance's toxicity, if indeed the body even finds it toxic when left alone to deal with it. What I'm implying there is being open to the possibility that your body and that substance know each other well, and already are in harmony as their natural state of being, because THEY don't believe in separation. That perhaps they already know that your body, spirit and all matter are ONE. It is only your mind that isn't aware yet that there IS NO ENEMY except your own choice to fear.

This does not mean that you wantonly consume fluoride once you are aware it is not exactly the best thing to take in, no. But you also don't unduly disrupt your life in order to accommodate a false need to avoid it at all costs. Or start a cause and disable others by instilling fear in them as well.

Trust in life and nature. Once you are aware of something, it is important to understand how to properly apply the knowledge gained. This is wisdom. Choosing to fear the knowledge you acquire, or the implications of that knowledge, is not applying it well. This is not how knowledge empowers. In fact, choosing fear is indicative of still having enough ignorance surrounding your knowledge to render that knowledge harmful. You're not complete, in other words, with that particular lesson yet. You will know you are when you no longer fear.

And in using the word fear, it appears that a great many people don't understand what is meant. Or assume they do know, and discount the discussion because they aren't "afraid". As used here, it doesn't mean shaking in your boots, can't sleep at night, or even feeling a need to warn the world (though all of these are a certain level of fear). It means the very simple, base level of choice that goes against trusting you are always well, safe and supported.

Fear in this sense is that nitty-gritty level assumption made that there is something you are encountering (or could ever encounter) that is greater than what you're made of that causes you to feel a need to protect yourself against it lest it "win" your life away from your sovereign domain. As if... that's even possible. This is fear at work.

It is completely understandable to take that stance in this world, of course. But if you're on the path, if you're seeking truth... it behooves you to reconsider that choice at every turn. Unfortunately fearing is quite embedded in consciousness here, and often goes unquestioned, labeled "common sense" or is even championed as "thinking with a hammer".

What's real and true is that whatever you are encountering is for your benefit, and your only "job" in the face of it is to discover how that is so. "How does this experience benefit my total self?" "What is the value of encountering this idea/thing at this time in my life? What have I been focusing on in my thoughts? How have I been feeling recently? How does this encounter relate to my energies as I've been experiencing them?"

If probed honestly, we inevitably - eventually - come to realize that what we encounter outside us is a result of what was going on inside us at some level for a while. The outer encounter is a reflection for us, to learn from. Not a causal factor in our life but a result of our consciousness. The causal plane exists at the unseen level. What's seen is the result of consciousness causes. *

So you can switch to non-fluoridated toothpaste, drink filtered water, but also trust that should you consume fluoride knowingly or unknowingly, your body knows what to do so that it isn't an issue for you or your health. And most knowledge about the dangers of this or that substance is minor in importance on the path once trust in life and nature is firmly established. You literally become impervious to much.

This is so simply because you now understand the value of dangers in a physical universe. They bring about dilemmas of consciousness. They insist that you consider many possibilities, engage yourself, choose something. Through this process you are given the opportunities needed to awaken to the truth of who you are.

You needn't be constantly at their whim or mercy, however. You can master the awareness needed to be in harmony and cooperation with life in this regard. Life will watch out for you just as you watch out for your own well being. This occurs through frequency resonance. All of your exploration, discovery and choice-making alters your frequency. All life is intelligent. Everything that exists resonates to certain frequencies. You simply won't encounter what you do not and cannot attract, once your awareness is such that those lessons are complete.

Most of the fears mankind lives with daily and thinks are "common sense" are rooted in a fear of death. Face that, and you will come to understand much of what I offered here in this thread. When you have no fear of dying, you suddenly look at all of life in a very different light. You become free to finally live.

I realize that many are not up to living by these ideas put forth, but some of us do, and do quite well. They are tested, tried and true for many years. Not just theories. And if one can accomplish something in this world through self-empowerment, all of us can. It's a choice, however. A choice that demands a great deal of self-responsibility and diligence of a different order than the norm.

And so I offer them simply for consideration. Only you can say what's true for you anyway, but now there's another direction for exploration and discovery of your truth, perhaps. Take or toss, of course.

(Must be the retrograde, I've suddenly found my voice again. wink)

* NOTE: For those who often cite painful or traumatic experiences in early childhood before beliefs and prejudices could have formed as reason not to buy into the premise above, bear in mind that the "consciousness" of a human being entering this realm is predicated on many factors, for the purposes of learning. There are indeed "pre-sets" that produce experiences as fodder for growth. There is also the mass consciousness influences and spectrum of frequencies, which are limited, to appreciate. Once here, however, the "I" has free will to choose how that consciousness, at whatever level it may be, is utilized. Most children cannot do this as children here, no. But once they become adults, if they realize there was a set up for the specific purpose of their growth and learning, they can look back upon their childhood experiences and discover the truth of self and sovereignty just as much as they can from their current adult experiences. Once again, to do so requires making a choice to invest faith in fear or in trusting life and nature to be inherently supportive of our growth at the onset of the discovery process. In other words, choose to explore from an open stance, or choose to explore from a closed one. And realize you made the choice you did, because the results of your exploration will be based on your initial intent for discovery.

Re: What is the proper diet for humans, Raw Food?

Ok, disclaimer, I just skimmed sowelu's long posts cause it seemed a little redundant and verbose.  I get what your saying, but would have to side more with Tao Jones.  I am reminded of my grandmother.  She is a strict christian scientist, and that plays a big part in her refusal to consider healthier food.  She believes that all healing comes from god, and therefore you don't need to worry about what you eat because you are the image of god and therefore perfect and yadayadayada.  My point is this, while I definitely agree that with enough consciousness, even a McMeal can be transformed into blissful, healthy conscious energy, it is a lot more difficult to create harmony out of discord, and realistically, most of us don't have the presence to pull it off, especially not on a regular basis.  Yes, you can do it, but why make it so difficult?  Most of us need all the help we can get to maintain presence of mind, and the right food can be a HUGE help.

Also, I don't think following cravings works when your body is still under the spell of powerful addictions, which is exactly what our attraction to processed flours, sugars, oils and such is.  I think the crackhead reference was actually very appropriate here.  Once our bodies are healthy and free of that crap, the urges become much more reliable and salubrious (though you still need to differentiate mental and bodily desires).
