No need to explain girl, hokey movies are always better buzzed
That was the first time I ever drank at a movie called National Treasure. But I knew...it's gonna be hokey. Need some help here! haha)

Sorry to add into your post Lyra - but I couldn't resist that one...

Regarding the movie - it was a quite enjoyable on an purely entertainment level. Helped a lot by Sean Bean who I think is totally great!!

Well - I was kinda taking the pee out of the fact you mentioned not drinking very often at the cinema. On this occasion suggesting that it was the only time you got drunk whilst watching that particular movie, rather than movies in general.
Sorry - it's never very funny when ya gotta explain...
Just my dumb humor... hehe

Okay, well, maybe I'm retarded 'cause I'm still not getting it. I don't get what was meant by adding "called" and having it read the revised way. I went back and re-read it a bunch of times, but it's not making sense to me, like, what am I missing here? Oh well, moving on....!
Related to connections between actors - I think another one would be Keanu Reeves and Brad Pitt.
Both tend to do similar themed films (breaking out of the system for one example). But where as Brad Pitt portrays rebellious characters in an aggressive, disruptive and mayhem causing way, Keanu Reeves tends to be rebellious in a passive, non-compliance "I will do my own thing" type of way.
I wonder if there are any more pairs of opposites. Can anyone think of any others?
I wonder if there are any more pairs of opposites. Can anyone think of any others?
Well, (and this is just my opinion) ultimately it's not important. !

Not important for sure. But interesting - for me at least. So I was wondering if anyone else found such connections interesting...

You know what it is, it's that I just got through reading Stuart's latest (http://forum.noblerealms.org/viewtopic.php?id=1277) Anytime I read his stuff or anybody talking about the big stuff that matters it jolts me back from the dream you could say. This movies stuff has gotta stop. I'm about ready to delete the movies section from my website in fact. The only problem is, it draws in a lot of people...like, a LOT. And many of those people then go on to read the rest. So I'm a bit torn. But it's time to stockpile food and guns and get ready for the end!!!!
haha Actually I don't feel that way about stockpiling, but when I read these sorts of articles (like Stuie's) I do feel like maybe we should all be focusing our attentions elsewhere? You know, be concerned more with stuff that matters, like what should we be doing here, versus using that precious time to figure out which actors are polar opposites? You know that when we die we're going to be kicking ourselves for using our time in that way! ![]()
Lyra-I know what you mean. Its time to look inward now. Unplug so to speak.
The movies have a way of leading us back into the mass illusion. Even though I still think there are some important clues to our spiritual salvation hidden within them...but ...its not worth the brain-drain.
I haven't meditated or dreamed in the longest time. I have to work on myself and turn away from the mainstream I guess. Thanks for the wake-up call.
p.s. I realize you weren't talking to me but it applies.

I often feel exactly the same way after reading those sorts of things. Also there have been one too many snags in the system recently that nearly caused my family a fair bit of difficulty, and certainly gave me an indication of how precariously balanced we all are...in the physical sense of material and financial requirements that is.
But that said - most of us here at NR have known for a long while what sort of potential future may turn up eventually. Some have probably prepared mentally for it – just in case they end up in that eventuality. A few may have taken steps for physically preparing for such a possible future. I guess I have gone 50 / 50 in both cases.
Within us on a deep level we all will have faced trials and tribulations. By now, those people that have been on the path for a fair while – will have figured out a bit about how they work as individuals. Or as Stuart Wilde puts it, they would have taken steps toward integrating the Shadow. I have done a fair bit of that as well. And I guess so too have quite a few others.
Meanwhile though, there is only so much we can do when faced with potential and possible futures, and regardless of how much stuff we work on that is actually important – we are in the here and now, and whilst here we may as well pay attention to what is going on around us. Movies are a big part of our culture (even if much of that culture is bullshit and unimportant) – which I happen to enjoy. I don’t follow any celebrity nonsense, but I find connections between actors and their various projects interesting. It’s a reflection of the dark / light aspects of the world and the psyche – and for me at least – I think it can mirror personal lessons.
It is a bit of a coincidence then that you are considering taking your movie section down from your site, whilst meanwhile I am about to add a TV, Movie and Media section to my site. Starting with a write up (that I have just about finished) on Battlestar Galactica. I don’t watch much TV – we all know that it is 99.9999% distraction. But there is still a part of it that I enjoy – and there is still that component that has meaning on a deeper level.
Then after that is up I am off to spend two weeks in the forest with my wife and daughter – and will be miles away from anything, including the Internet. I will probably spend a lot of time enjoying nature. But no doubt I will also spend a bit of time pondering some movie or TV show in my head, as well as giving a bunch of thought to our reality and my own personal nature etc.
I guess in the end – I am learning to not be all that worried about what interests the bulk of the population have (even though it does have in impact on all the rest of us). Though I still find that I am deeply affected by the opinions of those I respect – which includes many of the people I have met on the Internet over the years. It’s all a bit of a mish-mash I guess – so I am just balancing things out, following the middle-line rather than jumping the polarity back and forth from black to white. It isn’t all that easy though.
Anyway bit of a long post, and not entirely relevant to movies.
But that said - most of us here at NR have known for a long while what sort of potential future may turn up eventually.......
Oh, I'm not just talking about prepping for potentials, I'm also talking about time wasting in general. Is this how we want to spend our time here? Probably not. There are so many more things we should be focused on. By making a joke about stockpiling food and guns I probably gave the impression that I was solely concerned with prepping for future problems, but that's not entirely what I meant. It's just a lot of issues I have with the whole movies things. We're a media obsessed culture. It gets.....worrisome after awhile. Case in point.....
Then after that is up I am off to spend two weeks in the forest with my wife and daughter.......But no doubt I will also spend a bit of time pondering some movie or TV show in my head,
See what I mean? !!!

Yeah, I really am going back and forth about this. And while I wouldn't go as far as to say I have "regret" about having that section on my site, I have to admit that I do feel a pang of something that makes me feel like maybe it was wrong to have it, I don't know. I mean, sure, it's all interesting and people have loads of fun reading it, but still.....it encourages the media obsession. I'm helping to perpetuate it. Do I really want to be doing that? Not really.
The world is in the shape it's in today, why? Because our parents, and now us, sat around watching TV and consuming movies and media all throughout the 50s-90s. We all sat on our asses consuming entertainment, and look where we all are. Quite a fine mess we're in. So yeah, I do feel a bit like I'm just helping to further that. Think I'll go flip a coin, see what it says. "Heads, I remove the movies section. Tails, it stays."
I'll let you know what the coin toss says. I always do best two out of three. ![]()

No - I got your meaning...and just to elaborate and clarify a bit...

You are quite right! And that was my point. In fact that is exactly what I have written about in my last two pieces on my site. I know what it is and I can see where it is heading. What I am trying to say is that I make a conscious choice to watch a bit of TV and some movies (just like some aware / awake people make a conscious choice to smoke, drink alcohol, or eat junk food even though they know it isn’t good for them). In addition to the fact that I think the sort of thing you write about on your site regarding movies (and the question I posed about actors in this thread) is very interesting and worthwhile (in a earth-bound, practical, every-day materialistic sense).
Are there more important things to be doing? Undoubtedly! Does that mean I shouldn't make a conscious choice to spend a fraction of my time consuming / thinking about media (heck I will also no doubt spend some time thinking about the few computer games I play, along with the novels that I read)? Well that is totally down to the choice of free-thought. Of course that is simply my opinion.
I think there is a distinct difference between people that spend their lives addicted to media and never think of anything outside of the mainstream. And someone who has just gone out to the forest, getting in touch with himself and his family…probably hiking all over the place – and no doubt spending from morning to night out doors, self-reflecting, considering the world and life etc – and just happens to spend a few minutes each day thinking about media. (And I say this not to justify my own case - this discussion isn't about me, but to highlight the sort of situation that may apply to others. I don't think I need to hammer at that point though, because you are probably as aware of it as I am, without my need to write this paragraph).
But yes, I appreciate your point that media has got so ingrained into us to such an extent, that some of us could go out into the middle of the Arctic and still find time to think about it.

Yep, I see where you are coming from. I didn't update my website for nearly a year for the exact same reason. People spend their lives addicted to the Internet - they pour a lot (too much?) energy into games, reading websites and news sites, creating websites and blogs, not to mention the amount of energy that is required to maintain a presence / conversation on a forum! (The previous post I wrote in this thread took me just under an hour to write - and this one as taken nearly 30mins - the length of a short movie!!!)
So I was coming from pretty much the same angle; that I need to invest x amount of time into a website, just so y amount of people can come and spend a portion of their time to consume it. Many of those people could well be Internet addicted. I choose to think that the content makes it worthwhile - and that I can't hold myself accountable for how much time others spend on the Internet - even if I maybe contributing towards their addiction. Again that is my conscious choice.
I work on myself and slowly progress my living situation toward a more balanced and integrated whole (like you do no doubt). In the meantime I am quite happy to make a conscious choice reading, thinking and consuming a small amount of media – which sort of includes these very forums!
So I personally feel that is an acceptable approach. But as to those that just want, movies, movies, movies – I really cannot attest, because I am not one of them – and if any of them come to my site to read about Battlestar Galactica, that is the choice that they have made with their time and their life. I guess ultimately I am not writing for that sort of audience, I am writing for the sort of people who will find the topic interesting and mind-opening.
As you say it works both ways – and whatever you choose to do regarding your movies section will ultimately also be a free-thinking choice.
I mean, sure, it's all interesting and people have loads of fun reading it, but still.....it encourages the media obsession. I'm helping to perpetuate it. Do I really want to be doing that? Not really.
Maybe it's causing people to look more closely at their own media obsession, and once they realize what it's really all about -- THANKS to your site -- they'll then be ABLE to disconnect much more quickly than they otherwise would have.
I don't think that intelligent discussion of any subject could in and of itself constitute an "encouragement of obsession" with it. I think it would be a mistake to remove the section.

Well, I did the coin toss. Heads, I scrap the movies section. Tails, it stays. Best two out of three.
First two flips.....tails. Third.....heads.
Guess it's staying.
I really and truly do make life decisions many times based on coin tosses. "Heads, I quit and walk out the door, right now. Tails, I stay." "Heads, I buy the CD player for my car that's on sale. Tails, I don't." Several jobs I didn't quit...solely based on coin tosses. So yes, I guess the movies stuff remains for now. ![]()
