I am speaking very literally, not condescendingly, and am genuinely confused. I am describing what "eggs", "milk", and "meat" as we call them, literally are. My questions are out of genuine confusion. I don't look down on people who are not vegan, but I believe I am entitled to my confusion. I am expressing it here.

Re: So, how much do you actually know about how your body works?

There is a truly great book called "Biochemical Individuality" about the differences in people and the diets they require. Some folks whose ancestors ate lots of dairy products have bodies that can use those foods, others can't. For instance, when the US shipped dried milk to countries in Africa many of the starving people they were trying to help got very sick. Their ancestors ate grain and vegetables with a little meat; they didn't raise cows like the Europeans did.

Since going vegan and not drinking milk for about three years now, I am able to immediately discern when I have eaten something containing milk by how nauseous I become within minutes. It makes me think that people who are still consuming quantities of dairy have become *extremely* numbed. If anything, I have become *overly* sensitive, but the difference is undeniable. I couldn't go back to eating animal products if I wanted to, my body responds automatically.

Your body saves energy by shutting down the production of milk-digesting enzymes if you don't eat dairy. Many societies that eat fermented milk products (yogurt, keifer) have some very long-lived individuals.

In evolutionary terms the modern western diet appears to be another selection process; anyone who can't adapt to eating low nutrient, pesticide-contaminated food dies young and the New Human, who can live on sugar, hydrogenated fats and contaminated protein survives.

Take a look at www.westonaprice.org/index.html for an examination of the benefits of a "traditional" diet.

No.  Clarification.  There's a difference between seeing through what somebody's words are trying to do, manipulation-wise, and actually being affected by them.   If anything, you bringing up eggs yesterday inspired me to buy some when we went to Whole Foods last night.

Ummmmmm....eggs.  wink

Did you realize that the foods that you eat in lieu of meat, eggs and dairy could also be spun in a negative light?  This is something I was laughing about in fact last night, how vegans get all snooty about describing dairy, eggs and meat, not realizing how the foods they eat can be spun in the same way.  ALL food can be spun in a weird light...if one really wanted to try hard enough.   Eggs are ova?   So aren't fruit.  (I assume that as a vegan, you're consuming fruit at some point?  If not, then this doesn't apply to you.)

"A fruit is a structure that develops as the ovary of a flower that nourishes and protects developing seeds." - http://www.jmu.edu/biology/k12/fruitdev/fruit.htm

"I can't understand why somebody would want to eat the ova of a plant."  Ptwey!  All foods could be spun in that light if one really wanted too.  Anything that's alive that we're ingesting can be seen in a gross way, and as "killing."  Just depends to what extent you want to take it.

(This reminds me of another related thing - how certain parts of an animal are more acceptable to eat than others.  In poor societies, they eat and use nearly everything - stuff you couldn't pay me to eat!  So I can understand the mentality of thinking products from animals is gross...and let's face it, based on one's culture and upbringing, there's going to be a "sliding scale" of grossness.  For vegans, no animals parts are acceptable.  It's all nasty.  "Cow secretions!  Unfertilized chicken ova!  Flesh dripping in blood!  Ptewy!" For many meat eaters, only certain parts of certain animals is okay.  For other meat eaters...anything goes.  If it moves and it can be killed and it'll keep you alive, then it's all good...)

CHRIST CONSCIOUSNESS SPIRITUAL TOOLBOX
Get spiritually streetwise now

   123456789123456789123456789

At the root of all illness and disease in the body is a spiritual reason. We are spiritual beings having a physical experience, so from a Christ Consciousness way of looking at how to have no disease issues in this world we need to pay far more emphasis on our spiritual aspect of why we are here and what is our purpose.

The most important thing a being can do in this world is to know who they really are, this is one of the biggest questions.

We are all here to learn and grow on a physical level, however our spiritual growth is our real purpose and much more important. Our message to you is forget religions and their churches.    " Your body is your church, as within as without, as above as below".

Your physical vehicle becomes a reflection of any spiritual issues you have within. Our society is conditioning us to take little responsibility for things that happen to us in our life. We see things as accidents and mask our illnesses with band-aids and in the process whether you are aware of it or not, the consequence of going down this path has led us in many cases to be victims and has lead people to believe and accept that there is nothing they can do and are helpless.

From a Christ Consciousness perspective it is horrendous what is going on in this society, simply if there were no victims there would be no predators. People have allowed themselves to be dis-empowered. One thing you can do right now as a new tool to incorporate in your daily life is to take full responsibility for everything that happens to you. This gives a reason for everything and if you can look at why it has happened rather than focusing on what has happened, it will soon change the feeling you have of yourself.

The purest way of interpreting our reality is known as 'Christ Consciousness' and a living being will keep coming back to this place till they reconnect back to this purity of energy.  It is the nature of your being to be connected to the source, however each being has free will and through the choices they make minute to minute will determine the path they lead and where they will align to in the universe.
As I have said before there is a war going on between the dark and the light to extremes we have never seen before, with humans killing each other over religion.  "My god is better than your god and I have a right to kill you for that god".  This is absolute insanity!
I will clarify again as Jesus there is no great father in the sky, it is mans way of putting responsibility and blame onto a fictitious authoritarian to explain pain and suffering.  There is a great spirit that permeates through everything, that is the truth of it.  I ask you what isn't god? Is there anything you interact with on a daily basis that has not got the spirit of god in it?: No, so if you can know this in your heart it will change the way you interpret things and you will feel a hell of a lot better.  Who would need to kill anyone again over religion if humans were to accept this fact.  There is no place for religions, disciples, secrecy and power.

Christ Consciousness is all about feeling a connection to great spirit and everything in the web of life.  To accept 100% total responsibility for one's thoughts, words and actions and an understanding that what ever energy you project, it will reflect or return, you are therefore responsible for experiences you draw into your life.  We must understand that it is not what a person does in their life that is important, it is rather the intention behind it.  In other words when you thought, spoke or acted were you coming from love or fear?, were you honest and childlike?

I hear many people in healing circles talking of a need to stay positive in life and people who have tried this approach have failed dismally, as it is dishonest.  The expression of energy throughout the universe shows us that it is impossible to stay in positive charge states for too long, children are a great example of this.  I have seen so many people with unbelievable amounts of unexpressed anger because practitioners haven't told them that to express anger is a normal process we must go through to release the negative energy.  A persons ability to feel happy is relative to their ability to feel sad, they must have the ability to be able to swing from one polarity to the other, from balance to imbalance, as you can again see in children.  If everything has the spirit of god moving through it, one must surrender to imbalance as well as balance.  There is reason for darkness and light, they work together as a timing process.
This is the exact reason I love working with babies and children.  They are free in their expression, one minute crying, the next laughing and sometimes angry.  They are focused on what is in front of their face and not concerned with yesterdays events or fearful of tomorrow.  They live in the moment, surrender to it and that's Christ Consciousness in action- My advise is: "WATCH THE KIDS!"

On a more physical level all degenerative diseases, all mental illnesses, cancers, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, kidney and gall stones, thrush and even tooth ache are directly caused by excessive acidity in the body.

What I have found through my experience is that the optimum PH of blood, tears and saliva is the same as the optimum mathematics. Basically 3.14 inches (or pye), converted into centimetres is 7.6.
A PH of 7.6 will not allow disease to grow in the body.

When we stress we produce negative energy. Negative energy into bodily fluids produces negative PH- which is acid.
All forms of arthritis, penile dysfunction, degrading of teeth and bones is acid build up.
Our world is holographic by nature, as we stress we acidify, as the planet stresses she acidifies- hence acid rain.

Our aim is to neutralize the acid by assisting and guiding you through the use of simple tools you can incorporate in your daily life, so it doesn't allow an environment for disease to grow.

Together with an understanding of our thought patterns to how we got the disease, allows you to heal yourself.
We have found using this way, healing is quicker with far less chance of relapse, as in the future you have the power and tools to heal yourself.

The simple tools you can use to keep your body at a PH of 7.6 is meditation and diet.

Meditation is a great tool because during meditation we slow down our breathing.  This raises the carbon dioxide levels in our body.  CO2 is a neutralizer for acid and is the same as bicarbonate soda, in a gas form.

To neutralize acid levels in your body take 1/2 teaspoon of bicarbonate soda in a glass of warm water one to two times daily.  This also acts as a great detox. Eating more alkalising foods such as bananas, avocados, eggs and fresh vegetables will reduce acid build up.  Acidifying foods include meat, fish, soft drinks.   The ideal diet is 80% Alkalising foods and 20% acidifying foods.

Saliva or urine tests can be done daily to monitor acid build up.

Re: So, how much do you actually know about how your body works?

Very helpful website about body PH:

http://www.alkalizeforhealth.net/

Lyra, it is just a bit frustrating to have people explain to me that I'm being "snooty" when it was not within my intention. I was not aiming to be emotionally manipulative with what I was writing. Many people dismiss all vegans as snotty and cranky, and never bother thinking about changes they could make in their own eating/health.

I don't really want to list all the reasons I am aware of to not eat meat. I made the decision because when I look at meat, I am reminded that my body is made of meat, and so yeah that grossed me out. I don't want someone to eat the meat of my body, therefore I choose not to eat other people's (haha, I mean animals! typo!) meat.

And yeah, you can spin vegetables as being gross too, but I dunno... I guess I just think its different to stop an animal's heart beating than to pick an apple off a tree, even though both die. Also, have you ever seen footage of a slaughter house killing floor? Its quite different than watching a piece of broccoli being hacked to bits by sharp knives and exposing the "glistening broccoli-inards". smile But I really don't want to argue about it, or hurt your feelings.

I don't think that everyone needs to/ought to go vegan, either! I just think it is a good response to a world very much out of balance.

I have recently been very depressed by the cattle industry, and what it has done to America, not to mention England and Ireland before that. I read an amazing book called Beyond Beef : The Rise and Fall of the Cattle Culture by Jeremy Rifkin. I will post some of the data from the opening chapter here later, because it is kind of brain-bending. You can read some reviews at Amazon. This one reader had a very good point, and he lives near me:

http://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Beef-Cattl … 0452269520

It was in reading Beyond Beef : The Rise and Fall of the Cattle Culture by Jeremy Rifkin years ago that I had a better idea of what I was seeing around San Joaquin County in Northern California as I drove around the dairies that stood close to the San Joaquin River and reeked of ammonia and manure dust in the air on windy days that left ones car and lungs dusted with a fine film. The cattle and their massive manure piles , are less than 30 yards from the San Joaquin River. Now consider some basic facts. Cattle produce a large amount of urine as it is. Now take one cow and multiply it by 100, 200 even 500. Now visualize all that urine going into the ground, where when it rains it soaks deeper and in dispensed into the small leech veins in the ground that in turn hook up with larger areas that feed into ground water and the river. Then look at the massive manure piles that dots the area and hang a clean white piece of clothe on your car antenna as well as a tree branch or whatever in the back yard. Then after you have driven around check the antenna clothe. After its been breezy check the clothe in the back yard. Then if you have the micro filters on you home air conditioner recheck them as well. What you will discover is pollution that has literally changed the white clothe-filter to either a light brown or a dark brown. Now consider what this manure dust does to your lungs.

I will post some of the stats later, but it is something to the effect that out of all the grain produced in the world, over 20% of it goes straight to feeding cows. And then, out of all the beef grown in America, 80% of it is exported to England! English and Scottish elite families have maintained control over America by way of buying massive plots of land and filling them with cows. Literally tens of millions of buffalo were slaughtered to make room for the first 600,000 head of cattle in America. The buffalo was an animal with spiritual significance to the Native Americans, and the slaughter basically eliminated their ability to conduct their rituals with the buffalo. So the drive towards cattle farming was directly related to the genocide of the Native Americans. Well, the book is plenty to read, there are tons of factoids in it like that.

We recently moved out of the city and into the sparsely-populated countryside. Unfortunately, we are finding that although the scenery is very expansive... everything is FENCED OFF! There are fences everywhere, across these huge vast plains. And it turns out, no public access. Cow grazing land only! So we end up having to drive for 30+ minutes to get to an accessible trailhead, even though we are literally surrounded by millions of wide-open acres. They are reserved for the cows, and the farmers will shoot at us if we trespass.

EATING
By Peter Singer and Jim Mason

ARE VEGANS BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT? (From Chapter 16 of the same name)

Some people think that factory farming is necessary to feed the growing population of our planet. The truth, however, is the reverse. No matter how efficient intensive pork, beef, chicken, egg, and milk production become, in the narrow sense of producing more meat, eggs, or milk for each pound of grain we feed the animals, raising animal on grain remains wasteful. Far from increasing the total amount of food available for human consumption, it reduces it.

A Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation, or CAFO, is, as the name implies, an operation in which we concentrate the animals together and then feed them. Unlike cattle on pasture, they don't feed themselves. There lies the fundamental environmental flaw. Every CAFO relies on cropland, on which the food the animals eat is grown. (Aquaculture for carnivorous fish like salmon has no need of cropland, but the basic principle is the same - they don't catch fish, fish must be caught for them.) Because the animals, even when confined, use much of the nutritional value of their food to move, keep warm, and form bone and other inedible parts of their bodies, the entire operation is an inefficient way of feeding humans. It places greater demands on the environment in terms of land, energy, and water than other forms of farming. It would be more efficient to use the cropland to grow food for humans to eat.

Cattle in feedlots mostly eat grains - in the U.S., corn, but in other countries it may be wheat or another grain. This is what Frances Moore Lappé famously called "a protein factory in reverse" - meaning that you start out with a large amount of protein, channel it through cattle, and end up with a much smaller amount. In her 1971 classic Diet for a Small Planet, she calculated that it took 21 pounds of grain to produce one pound of beef, and that an acre of land devoted to cereals could produce five times as much protein as an acre devoted to meat production. Since then, beef producers have improved their efficiency, but when we take into account the fact that only about half the weight of a steer is boneless beef, 13 pounds of grain are required to produce that single pound of beef. With pigs, it takes about six pounds of grain to produce one pound of boneless pork. But even these figures are flattering to meat production, because a pound of meat contains much more water than a pound of grain does.

Raising chickens is less inefficient. According to the U.S. National Chicken Council, it takes just two pounds of feed to produce one pound of chicken, but this is a live-weight figure. After slaughter, when blood, feathers, and internal organs have been removed, a 5-pound chicken won't produce much more than 3 pounds of meat. That puts the grain-to-meat conversion ration back up over 3 to 1, including bones and water. So the National Chicken Council's own figures prove that, even with the most efficient form of intensive meat production, if we really want to feed ourselves efficiently, we'll do much better to eat the grain ourselves than to feed it to the chickens. If it is protein, rather than simply calories, we are after, we'll do better still growing soybeans. Although in the past some nutritionists claimed that animal protein is higher in "quality" - that is, in the balance of amino acids - than plant protein, we now know that there are no significant differences in the quality of protein between soybeans and meat.

How Much Water to
Make One Pound of Beef?

March 1, 2001 -- To date, probably the most reliable and widely-accepted water estimate to produce a pound of beef is the figure of 2,500 gallons/pound. Newsweek once put it another way: "the water that goes into a 1,000 pound steer would float a destroyer."

Well, no worries, nobody is making you have to explain anything or answer for anything.  I mean, if you're able to go without animal products, more power to you.  I'd like to ideally.  But for me it doesn't seem possible while in this body, without getting sickly.  But I admire anybody who can pull it off.

No...but I have seen pics.  It's not pretty.  I've also read descriptions in books and write ups and such.  (btw....I only eat beef here and there, just poultry and fish mostly.)

I'll tell you, it's a weird conflict.  I can look at animals and think they're the cutest most wonderful things............and still get hungry.  My body knows how much nutrition is there and no matter what I read, I can't help but finding animals tasty.  Here's a funny anecdote you'll probably roll your eyes about big_smile  but one time back in California I was feeding the ducks at a lake....totally cute, wonderful ducks full of fiesty pep and personality..........and as I'm sitting there on the bench I'm watching one of the ducks waddle away from me and was like, ummmmmmmmmmmmmm....duck.......... big_smile  I totally envisioned this big fat duck on a plate with like, Chinese sweet and sour duck sauce or something.  It was terrible!  Vision overlaid the scene of me feeding the duck.  I don't think I've ever actually eaten duck...it just suddenly seemed like a tasty idea!  Ah well.   Oh yeah...and there's the time I was on a train heading to San Francisco and passing through one of the many fields in California's Central Valley area.....and there were cows.....and I was looking out the window at these cows in the field and my stomach started grumbling.....ummmmmm....hamburger!  Steak!  YUM!   I got up and ran off to the dining car to see if they had hamburger.  No, just had chicken.  Not the same, dammit!

It's terrible.  I know.  I've tried.  But these evil meat eating tendencies persist.   But it would be different I know if I had to kill the animal myself.  I probably couldn't and would just starve and waste away rather than do that.  It's obviously easier when somebody else is doing it behind closed doors.  hmm

That is interesting, definitely.  I think the reason that this has been so rampant is that people have been in the dark about it for decades.  People aren't exactly seeking out the information about what's really going on here, and nobody has exactly stepped forward to show them.  But we've seen the tide turning in the last 10 years alone, with a rise in the green movement, more and more people going vegetarian....I used to work in an office that had 18 computer software programmers...and fully half of them were vegetarians.   Numbers like that were unheard of years ago.   Vegetarians/vegans are becoming so common that restaurants are changing their menus to cater to them.  And now we have documentaries like Super Size Me and mockumentaries like Fast Food Nation, (based on the book of the same name) among the many MANY exposes out there, that are bringing awareness of the situation to the masses. People are now becoming informed.  It may not be enough though, or too little too late, I don't know.   Maybe it's all a part of the shift.  You never know. wink

Now, here's the kicker though, back to the cattle farm stats you were relaying, and avoiding meat because the world has become unbalanced.............all those cows aren't just going into hamburger and prime rib.  They're going into the bezillion products that people are using everyday. !!!  The obvious one, "leather" aside, there's Kodak film to face cream to who knows what else.  Products that you yourself may be using.

They've basically got the cow thing rigged so that there's almost no escaping products that have cow in it, some way, some how, from ground hooves to the organs, etc.   I read an article about this several years ago in Discover Magazine, and even saved the issue for that reason, feeling like it might come in handy some day to know which common every day products utilize which particular cow parts, as a useful "FYI."  I'll see if I still have this issue laying around....

I'm still not sure what to believe in regards to vitamin c.  The powder form still has benefits whether it works the same way natural vitamin c does or not.  So call it what you will, c, c/2 or whatever.

I agree natural sources should be the first choice for vitamins and minerals, but supplements do have medicinal effects, which can be positive in the short term.  I believe vitamin c falls into this category.  Another example would be co-enzyme co-q10.  If taken in large doses, it has the ability to kill all stages of tapeworms and ascaris.  Vitamin c has the ability to inactivate most mold spores in multi-gram doses.  It takes care of the mold spores that inhibit the liver from functioning, so the liver can get about its business of cleaning the blood.  This is why mega doses of vitamin c can shorten the length of a cold/flu (don’t expect the little pills they sell to have this effect though!).  So even though these supplements may not be equivalent to natural sources, they still can have medicinal benefits that can be utilized over the short term.  I believe all of Linus Pauling’s research was done with pure ascorbic acid or the buffered versions.

I don't believe in taking supplements any longer than necessary.  I tend to treat them just as I would any pharmaceutical.  I certainly would never advise somebody to substitute a vitamin or multivitamin for the real thing.  That doesn't mean I'm going to throw the baby out with the bath water though.  I've knocked out colds with vitamin c and used diluted solutions to de-mold nuts/grains for eating or sprouting.

Even though I agree with most of what Tim O'Shea says, I disagree with his assessment of vitamin c in this article.  He’s only giving his readers half the truth.  Maybe that was the intention, I don't know.

YES, that is a very good point! Even things such as building supplies, stuff that your house is made of, can be composed of cow/animal by-products! It is basically impossible to actually avoid.

It becomes very tricky. Is it important to have "vegan" shoes? For some people it is. But is it even possible to have, for example, a vegan car? A vegan house? Who among us is not dependent on DuPont or whatever other company for all the wires, cabling, pipes, etc in all the buildings we inhabit that incorporate animal products? Even Kodak film, that is kind of amazing, I mean who would associate "animal products" with camera film?

That would be an interesting article to read. I remember when I first learned about all the animal by-products that go into construction materials, I just thought "Man, they have made it *impossible* not to be dependent!"

Re: So, how much do you actually know about how your body works?

I was going to hold off on posting this until a little while longer, but I can't help it, I'll spill it now...but today was Day 6 of:

- No caffeine
- No processed foods
- Minimal to almost no dairy

and Day 5 of:

- No caffeine
- No alcohol
- No refined sugar
- No processed foods
- Minimal to almost no dairy

!!!!!!!!!!  It's kind of exciting.  I just might be able to pull this off.   But there wasn't a day that was going by where I wasn't consuming several cups of caffeinated tea and coffee, with sugar, and those junk snacks that they give away for free at my job, and maybe wine with my dinner, (and big piles of jellied/whole cranberry sauce that has like 10 pounds of sugar in it too...) and eating out a lot, getting pizza, bagels with cream cheese, just whatever I felt like, and whatever additional junk in general.  I'd so fallen off the wagon of healthy eating it's not even funny.  But for the last six days it's been a huge salad of raw veggies every night, fish, chicken, avocados, bananas, apples, muesli cereal...nothing but real food.  And no caffeine, refined sugar, or alcohol.  I even turned down attending the company Christmas party at my temp job, which is going to be held at some fancy schmancy Virginia Inn, you know, one of those old 1800's mansion houses that are now converted into a hotel, which would have had things like prime rib in red wine sauce, cream brulet and a full open free bar.   Not to sound like an alchy, but I mean seriously...who can resist a free open bar, you know?  wink  haha And I had the chance for a free bottle of Merlot wine today...and said no.   Have had all kinds of free holiday junk snacks waved in my face since last week from companies that send tins and baskets full of junk for the Holidays...said no.  And said no to the office birthday thing last Friday where they had Ben and Jerry's ice cream cake.  It's not that I don't still want these things....Ben and Jerry's ice cream cake??  Yum!  But I just keep remembering everything I've read recently, and can't do it anymore.

I wanted to wait until I've made it a full week, because otherwise maybe I'm jumping the gun, but, we'll see.  So far it looks pretty good.............Let's hear it for Tim O'Shea and his big kick in the pants website!  big_smile

Thanks Thook.  smile  I have the "first week grumpies" though.  (just made that name up on the spot, haha)  But at work I've been irritable without my cup of sugary tea, or sugary snack to munch on.  As healthy and nutritious as bananas, apples and avocados are to snack on, they're not the same.

It's funny, but I was thinking about how the whole "going to get a cup of coffee or tea" (and snack) in the kitchen at work is a nice time filler sort of thing for a lot of people....it's "something to do."  And a the sugar itself creates that pleasant feeling that everything's okay.  Take that away and all of a sudden you've got somebody with nothing left to do and who knows that things AREN'T okay, and starts feeling really really grumpy!  haha
