Court TV's Latest Tune-In Gimmick: Schizophrenia
– Wed, Nov 8, 2006 –

Hot off its decision to cut programming from an excruciating 30 minutes to a more manageable 15 minutes, Court TV is ramping up its buzz with a new marketing gimmick to push its new series Murder by the Book. Planting an fine-tuned audio device in select book stores, the network has combined one part "cool military-style technology" with three parts "this isn't gonna be good for the crazies."

"Hey you, over here. Don't turn around," the voice warns. "Can you hear me? Do you ever think about murder, committing the ultimate crime?" [...]

The effect is achieved by focusing a beam of sound much like a laser. Someone standing in the beam can hear the voice loud and clear, while someone standing just two feet away can't.

So when your child goes hunting through Barnes & Noble looking for the last Harry Potter book, no need to feel too surprised when he shits his sheets for weeks to come.

Last week, I read this very article in the New York Post while I was at work. I could not believe my eyes while I was reading it. I wanted to post it on NR because it would be a perfect topic to discuss and now, it's smack middle in our silly newspapers. The article was very small (typical of NY Post, who put Britney Spears' divorce on the front cover instead of the election results) and figured "well, I will find it on its online version". WRONG. I couldn't find it for the life of me, so I gave it a few days and found it!

Add whatever you want pertaining to the subject. I never paid much attention to MILABs, military stuff until this article. Pretty freaky when it's in "broad daylight" as it was written in the New York Post.

Re: CourtTV's military tech. ads! SCARY!

I referenced an article from The Scotsman from 2002 in my MFA thesis on The Use Of Sound For Control, Healing and Empowerment. It sounds like the exact same technology.
http://www.truesoundhealing.com/thesis.html

In 2002, Woody Norris, the CEO of American Technology Corporation, announced the development of a sonic weapon for the Pentagon, which fires “sonic bullets.”  The demonstration model of the device resembles a large stereo speaker and uses a “hypersonic sound system”  which projects two beams of ultrasonic frequency, which act as a laser-precise carrier over which a 140dB sound is projected. The sound will only be heard by the target the beam is projected at, while those outside the beam would hear nothing. To the target, the sound would be about as loud as being under a jet engine taking off. A selection of 50 sound tracks is available to the operator, one of the most powerful being the sound of a baby crying, played backwards. Norris explained, “[For] most people, even if they plug their ears, it will produce the equivalent of an instant migraine. Some people, it will knock them on their knees (“Sound To Make An Army Flee” ).”

American Technology Corporation has also developed another device using their Hypersonic Sound System, which has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Installed in a vending machine, vendor display or advertisement, directional sound can be projected so that when a consumer passes by they hear a sound, message or advertisement, silent to other shoppers around them. Norris demonstrated the device at a mall near his office, directing it at passers-by, who all stopped to listen when the sound was directed at them. One woman was quoted as saying, “That is absolutely amazing. It sounds like the sound is inside your head (“Sound To Make An Army Flee” ).”  A popular soda company is planning to install the directional sound device in their vending machines, so that approaching customers will hear the sound of soda being poured over ice.

...... the strangest thing is... I've gone back and found this article, and I see that the TEXT HAS BEEN CHANGED. The woman's quote about the sound being inside your head is NO LONGER IN THE ONLINE VERSION OF THIS ARTICLE! How strange! I know I have a print copy at home, I'll have to go find it now....

A little more about HSS:

http://www.raven1.net/atcag982.htm
(SAN DIEGO, CA -- August 27, 1998) - American Technology
Corporation (OTC: ATCO), announced today that it has been
awarded its first military contract to assess the
applicability of using HyperSonic (tm) Sound (HSS)
technology to detect infrasonic acoustics associated with
high energy events important to the Nuclear Treaty Program
Office. The Company expects that this contract and expected
follow-on work will generate approximately $400,000 in
revenue over the next six months.

"This first military contract is the culmination of months
of work and serves as a springboard for significant
opportunities with the military not only for HSS, but for
our other technologies as well," said Con Brosnan,
president and CEO. "Because HSS is the first technology to
give sound projectable directionality, we expect this award
to be the beginning of additional military application
contracts."

Norris calls it a HyperSonic Sound System, and it is no ordinary speaker. Instead of a vibrating membrane, it uses a crystal wafer that can project a beam of sound across a room like a spotlight. When the beam hits a wall or a ceiling, it bounces off end creates the impression that the sound originates at that spot, like a ventriloquist throwing his voice. To achieve a stereo effect, two beams can be trained on opposite sides of a room or theater. "You can focus each beam on a point, and that's where the sound will be created," Norris says. Equally important, he adds, is that his new way of generating sound has less distortion over the full range of human hearing than even the most expensive speakers and is five to ten times more efficient, so less power is needed.

It may almost seem magical, but Norris's sound spotlight relies on a simple effect first explained 150 years ago by the physicist Hermann von Helmholtz. When playing two notes very loudly on an organ, he noticed that a third note, whose frequency was the difference between the frequencies of the other two notes, was also produced. Norris's device does the same thing, but in place of the organ he uses a crystal that produces two powerful beams of sound so high-pitched that they are beyond human hearing. The beams interact in such a way as to produce a complicated ultrasonic wave, of which one component is the difference in frequency between the two. That component is all you hear. For example, to produce a note of 440 hertz--A above middle C--Norris generates an ultrasonic wave containing tones of 200,000 hertz and 200,440 hertz. Only the difference between the tones--440 hertz--is audible.

Note: this effect of two tones producing a third "difference" tone is used in many Healing Sound CDs in the form of binaural beats (Robert Monroe's HemiSync is the most famous example). In that case, the different between frequencies is much lower because it is intended to effect brainwave states. For example, 400hz in the left ear and 410hz in the right ear will produce a binaural beat of 10hz, which the brain will entrain to and produce more alpha waves around 10hz. To imagine the same technique applied to ultrasound is pretty mindblowing!

The HyperSonic Sound technology gives you the ability to direct sound where you want it and nowhere else. With the combination of an ultrasonic powered emitter and a proprietary signal processor/amplifier, HSS can focus sound into a tight beam for optimal sound directionality and intelligibility. Similar to a beam of light, HSS uses ultrasonic energy to "shine" your sound on a very specific area. Using any media player with line-level output, HSS converts music or voice into a complex ultrasonic signal prior to amplification. Once emitted, the converted sound forms a sound column in front of the emitter, which remains focused as it encounters a listener located in the narrow column of sound.
