Topic: Spirit animals

The most frequent animal in my dreams are dogs and wolves. Actually, they're the only animals I can recall seeing in my dreams. However, one night in particular, I believe I witnessed my true spirit animal. Though many of you have probably heard this dream, I nonetheless feel compelled to write about it once again, in hopes of inspiring others to write about their own spirit animals they have. What animal do you identify with? Has anyone told you, of credible value, what your animal is? Or have seen your animal in dreams or in states of altered consiousness?
It'd be interesting to see just how everyone relates to eachother, and you never know, there could be great deal of synchronicity in such a place. As they say, like attracts like.
Anyways, on to my dream.

"The night was silent, and the wind had stopped its breathing. The only noise was the soft crackle of a dimming fire, casting its last rays upon the white teepees that surrounded it, as if sitting around the fire to hug its fading embers. I stood there alone, staring into the fire, yet perceiving all around me; the lake to my left, the forest to my right, and our encampment set in the ground in between. I stood there, wishing to myself how I yearned to live in more peaceful times. The time was of a dark age, when men were pitted against men, when happiness seemed scarce, and the only thing that kept me alive was love and the promise of freedom this life had given to me. The great tension was like that of a storm ready to unleash its fury on the ground below, yet I stood there, motionless, gazing into the fire, defending the camp against anyone who were bent on hurting us
Then, there was a noise; a faint rustle in the woods. The hairs stood up on on the back of my neck. I gazed into the inky darkness, yet could see nothing past the glow of the hearth. Suddenly, a form emerged; then another, and another. They were ghostly white, and they knew I was scared. Their soft, yet perceiving eyes pierced through my soul, and I could feel my fears melting away. They were wolves, a whole pack of them." - The Magical Mongoose.

The only dog to appear in my dreams is my very own, and he shows up in "protector" role often.  But the other animal that has appeared in dreams of great import is the owl.  One night I dreamt of being on a reservation in New Mexico when I came upon an owl on a "T" shaped post, but he was lying parallel to the ground with his eyes closed and to the sky.  I then saw a man covered in owl feathers with face paint on who was carrying a staff.  He was huge-- 7 or 8 feet tall, and he spoke on the wind asking if I was going to face him.  I didn't that time, but not long afterward I dreamt that a baby owl flew over and perched on my shoulder, burying its head next to my neck.  "I guess I have to take care of him now," I thought.

Many traditions call Owl scary or downright evil, and some Native American tribes feared shamans who carried 'owl medicine."  But the Cherokee revered Owl.  I'm part Cherokee, so.... maybe Owl is my friend?  In any event, owls are considered creatures that reveal secrets because they can see clearly in the darkness.

Wolves are said to be aligned with lunar energies, and are considered teachers and signals of intuition.  Owl is also aligned with the moon and feminine energies, so that's a similarity.

Re: Spirit animals

Bears have appeared in my dreams often. Usually I'll be walking in the forests (most times the forest is the one close to where I grew up) and I'll see one.

About three years ago actually, when I was traveling on the road (my mom was driving/I was in the backseat) we hit a bear!  It was kinda sad because the cops came and shot it.

At the time I didn't know it was symbolic (like who hits a bear on the road?), then after my sister had heard the news she was like !!! well THAT means something...

I didn't even have my seatbelt on or anything, I was laying down listening to music in the back.  Didn't even see it.

And a lot of times when I am awake I'll see a black cat crossing the road, all the time!  Glitch in the matrix. wink

Re: Spirit animals

Finally something I can write about. This will be my first major post.

I seem to dream about animals a lot. For a year or so I got stalked across the same dreamscape by white sabretooths, white tigers, and regular striped tigers. All way larger than normal and each appearing in separate dreams  Always seemed to be herding me or just toying. Never attacking or actually getting close.

A past life dream where I was a native in an African village, did something to get myself banned to the plains, where a whole pride of lions killed and ate me. It was a triple perspective dream. I watched myself as an observer, getting killed, and flying away in spirit all at the same time. Always felt like the cats I've had in this life  are those lions. Had a future dream about them too, that they evolved into bear/cat-like creatures and I was still involved with them.

Had a couple of dreams about playing with polar bears. One swimming down a really clear river with them with me in an inner tube, and another sliding down an iced over river with them. Those were fun.

Have had some with 4 white dogs in the guardian role. All of dogs that I owned that have passed. 3 are always in a forward role together, 1 always in the background, barely seen. The 3 forward were actually white in life, the one in the background was black in life.

Had  3 dreams about the dogs I own now.
One of my Siberian 15 yr. old girl. She has trouble walking, bad hips. Dreamed I snuck aboard a reptilian mother ship with her, while the reps were loading human meat to take off. They surrounded us, so part of me became a pile of fire to hold them off while  another part used a machine they had to scramble her and put her back together in better shape. The reps were pissed. Heard an evp voice say"good luck" very sarcastically just as I was waking up,and I said "same to you" while picturing their planet blowing up. This all happened when the "Are The Reptiles Leaving" thread and  the evp reverse speech discussion was going on NR. So you know where that came from, thanks NR. She does better walking tho.

My other dog, a black siberian/blue healer 4 yr old, I've raised since he was 13 days old. Mamma was little, had 8 pups, and quit feeding them or so I was told by the owners. Anyway it was a bad environment and I took him. So I took 2 weeks off work, slept on the couch with him, got up every few hours to feed, etc. Now we are really close, except he's pretty weird. The night before I went to pick him up, a dream voice told me: to take a male, that I would know which one because there would be something really odd about him. He had the souls of several of previous dogs I'd owned(the 4 I talked about above), and he would turn out to be the best dog I ever had. When I got to the place that had them, the lady brought out a huge clothes basket full of puppies. They all looked exactly alike. Thought  so much for that dream. Asked which ones were males. two.  Picked them up, couldn't see much difference. Looked closer, one had double dew claws on all 4 legs. I've never seen that before. So that was him and off we went. The jury is still out on the reincarnated dog souls and the best dog part of the dream.

When he was about 4 wks old, he tried to fly. Went to the edge of our deck, put his ears back, even smiled, and tried to leap up in the air. Promptly smacked into the ground face first. I remember thinking, he remembers how to fly. Now when he really runs, he still puts his ears back like that and gets the same smile. I think he's remembering still. Anyway one night I dreamed that I got in his body with him and he ran like that. I don't recall us flying, but it was one of my best dreams.

I also dream about fish and turtles once in a while.

My last recent animal dream was kind of gross, I was in an Indian village somewhere and there was a guinea pig crawling around on it's side because it's claws were so overgrown. Was half starved because it's teeth were too long. Felt really sorry for it, but woke before I could do anything about it.

Re: Spirit animals

SiriArc: Cool pictures. My name "Magical Mongoose" was actually made up by myself prior to knowing anything about reptilians wink.  I'm assuming you're eagle medicine, judging by the pictures you have posted here and in the past. Always nice to have a majestic visionary in such a time.

Lono: Cool. I think owls and wolves are deeply linked, as they both have a connection with the moon, and they are both teachers, stressing the idea of death and rebirth, not in a physical sense, yet the progression of change we all go through in our lives at some time or another.

Natural Mystic: I've also dreamt of a bear once\ My spirit guide, who calls himself Chief, who taught me in the ways of (you guessed it) the chief-shaman during the 1600s in a previous life, has also shown himself as a bear. In my dream, I recall being attacked by a bear. I ran inside, but the bear tried to follow me. I slammed the door shut, but its paw was stuck. A female companion, who I felt like I knew her, said "Forgive him, you must learn to forgive him", yet I wouldn't budge. I wouldn't risk letting something into my life that could hurt me, but by not trusting and forgiving, I was holding myself and everyone else up.
"A boy who's, leaving...nothing else, to chance again. You've got to let me in or let me out." - Badly Drawn Boy.

And last but not least, fidley. I must have canine medicine in me as well, and seeing them in my dreams often triggers varying degrees of lucidity. I once dreamt I was sitting on a bench on the edge of a cliff, looking down upon my friends and family that were swimming in the water. Out of nowhere, a figure...who I certainly don't recognize from this life, approached me. I stood up and said "It's good to see you again". We hugged, and he said to me "Sit on this bench for a while. Some interesting things'll happen". I sat there, and I became aware of a hunter that was travelling through the forest with a group of dogs. The pack immediately surrounded me, and began to bark. I immediately tensed up, but I didn't do anything. I sat there, and stared into their eyes. An overwhelming sense of peace and kinship with one dog in particular came to me.

My initial impression? Don't judge a book by its cover. See through the barking, and see if there's a bite. If there isn't a bite, embrace it. If there is a bite, ask yourself why.

Interesting story about being a stowaway on a reptilian ship with your dog. Also the "flying-dog" one is pretty funny as well. The one about that guinea pig is pretty weird. It seems to me like it represents a fear of suffering.

If you already haven't done so, you should research the different animals that appear in your dreams, and see if you identify with the medicine they ascribe to. Anyways, take it easy.

Re: Spirit animals

I've never had any significant dream that would indicate a certain animal as being "my spirit animal".  Guess I just never gave it much thought before.  Wolves have always protected me or led me to safety in my dreams (even saved me from a bear in one dream).  I've also had many dreams of cats, sometimes as guardians.  I've dreamed of turtles/tortoises and even some animals that don't have an earthly appearance or name.  Birds, though, are less frequent, but they are some of the most interesting ones.

I once dreamed that there was this fantastic bird, sitting on the fence in my back yard, that gave me a rosetta stone type of tablet and told me how to translate it.  Before I could get it to the house and begin my work, though, a portal opened up in mid-air, revealing a colosseum with thousands of people cheering on the participants (who were riding huge tigers, jaguars, lions, and such)... these riders began leaping through the portal and chasing me around my back yard... yada, yada, yada... but I never got to translate the text on the stone.  The bird was very large (about 3 feet tall), jet black feathers, had a beak somewhat more like a tucan's, but it was a brilliant blue color, as were it's webbed feet (it's feet were more like that of a duck's, only blue).  Of course there is no bird like that in this reality at this time, but I wondered for many years if such a bird ever existed.

I've also had dreams of a husky our family had when I was younger.  Samson was his name, and sometimes he finds me in the dream realm and we play for a while.  smile

Re: Spirit animals

Very cool thread...

I've often wondered what my spirit animal is too.   When I was living in the mountains, I had a series of dreams revolving around Elk and Bears.  Some were quite lucid.  Once while travelling on the train from the Rockies to Toronto, I had a very lucid moment with a bear.  I was in between worlds -not quite dreaming/sleeping but not awake - and I was in the forest when I saw a massive black bear approach.  We just stared at each other for a while and then it charged at me.  As it reached me, it bascially lept right into me and I awoke on the train wondering ?!?@?#@
I've also had a few lucid dreams revolving around dolphins.   I've never actually seen one in the wild, though I'd love to.  All my experience around water has been in cold ocean water.  In the dream, I was attending some sort of group meditation/seminar with my girlfriend.  There were many people there and we were being taught a new mantra or something.  After the first session wrapped up, I decided to go for a walk to explore the surroundings.  This is when I became lucid in the dream.  There was a massive body of water beside the meeting area that I hadn't noticed before.  I decided to go for a swim.  I jumped in and started swimming out into deeper waters.  All of a sudden, a dolphin came right up under my body and picked me up.  It started swimming around with me on  it's back and then dove deep into the water.  It brought me to the bottom where there was a crystal city.  It was soooo beautiful and calming to look at.  The buildings were of a very different architectural style than of anything I've seen today and in recent history.  The dolphin took me around the city until my human impulses overcame me and I thought "holy crap!! I'm underwater, how have i been breathing??!", at that point I was zipped up to the surface where I stepped back into the retreat like nothing had happened.

So yeah, I guess bears and dolphins have stood out for me in dream life.  When I'm out in the bush, it seems like I was wind up seeing wolves and everything I read about wolf medecine really resonates with me... so who knows!

btw, I've really enjoyed reading everyone's messages in this thread  smile

Re: Spirit animals

Yeah, I think most animal spirits come and go, depending on what you're working on and what you need during that time. The best bet is to find out more about these animals that appear in your dreams, particularly from sites that deal directly with animal symbolism, and go from there.
Pink: Sounds like your dog has been paying a visit to you in the dream world; there must've been a connection between the two of you. I'd be awesome if there were some real Native-American shamans we could talk to about our spirit animals, so we'd have some clue as to what exactly our soul resonates with.
Worldbringer: Cool dream(s) with the dolphins. Maybe in the dream world, they've created "psychic cities" underwater, and maybe you were invited to pay a visit to them to re-awaken your creativity and inspiration. Just a thought wink.
Though probably many have said this in the past, this just came to me: Our souls resonate at unique frequencies, seperate "stations" of perception if you will that every human is tuned into. This allows us individualization, individual thought and being. As you're probably familiar with the law of like-attracts-like, we attract certain spirit animals that match our frequency. Sometimes, our frequencies are in different areas than your baseline "station", and thus, we attract different circumstances, dreams and spirit animals to us to help us keep, in the ultimate design of things, our frequency maintained and heightened.

Re: Spirit animals

As far as interpreting animal symbolism goes, I've been using Animal Speak by Ted Andrews (I think!?!).  It's a great resource.  I usually like to have it with me for road trips too as I almost always recieve a sign in the form of an animal/bird sighting as I'm just beginning my trip - sometimes the syncronicities of the sighting and what takes place during the trip are tres cool.

Magical Mongoose:  I agree with your soul resonation theory... it also helps to explain the apparent lack of consistency or patterns in regards to animals that come to us.

I almost forgot about the raven!  When I was living in the rockies, years ago, I had a job as a campground cleaner.  We had lots of free time to do as we pleased, so I would wander around and taught myself how to do a very convincing raven call.  I would 'talk' to the ravens around and used it when hiking in the woods to let the bears know I was around.  Soon, I began seeing them in my dreams, sometimes with other animals, very often wolves.  That was cool as I later learned they will sometimes pair up with wolves in the wild!

This call was a great tool when I taught ESL overseas as the little Korean kids had little exposure to ravens/crows and the call would always get their attention right away.  I do it for fun in the city, either to get a hold of someone I know who is across the street and doesn't see me, or I just use it to wake people out of their bubble - random raven calls directed at joe public while walking downtown...great fun! lol  Sometimes I get a smile or a giggle out of them, others just look stunned/bewildered.
