Where does the past reside? History. As it is remembered. The answer: in our minds.
Where does the future reside? The answer: also in our minds. (Assuming one makes plans or anticipates anything at all.)
Gives one a unique perspective on from where it is that the present may originate, does it not?

In the name of all things serious and also fun under the sun - like mental clarity and guava juice :
Xenopope -- i agree -- the past exists in our minds as it gets recorded (whether it's factual or we end up adding/subtracting stuff is another story - but maybe also part of the same story) ... and the future -- well it hasn't happened yet but we can certainly imagine/envision various scenarios in our heads and i'm pretty sure many of us do all the time ...
to be aware of the present -- to see things clearly - with what's happening around me - as well as inside of me, i know i need to be paying attention -- and i've noticed that when i'm paying attention, my mind is quiet - it's not chatting away ...
however - as i observe myself, and as i watch my mind - thoughts from the past creep in all the time -- sometimes by themselves with no seeming rhyme or reason for them to pop up, and sometimes in response to events that are happening ...
i think it's in this way that the past can be limitting / debilitating ... all the hurts that are acquired in various forms ... and when i think about the future sometimes there are worries or fears that come - what will happen - what if this happens or this doesn't happen, what if i get hurt again, what if i fail -- again it's fear -- that's why i THiNK that thinking is tied to fear in this way ...
so that's one part of memory ...
i see the past as the future - just repeating ... unless we're grounded in the present ... i believe that it's meeting myself in the present AS I AM (fears and flaws and all) that there is any hope of breaking free from the past & future ...
-- that's also when time ceases to exist -- in our heads -- in the present ...
K says the act of observation means caring -- that it's a COMPLETE non-fragmentary movement -- love and freedom (i'm scared of using those words sometimes) but those things are also tied into observation as well ... when you understand yourself - you can start to understand other people ...
maybe it's more complicated than this and there's lots of things i don't know or don't understand -- but at the most basic level -- this is it 4 me ...
for ne1 reading this: what do you think about time being related to sorrow or fear ?
