Part I - Global Economic Crisis

The news will come out of China.  It may be predicated on concerns over newly nuclear North Korea, or perhaps a claim of U.S. impotence due to a political gridlock following the elections, but it will be a bold economic move that demonstrates to the world that China is truly a force to be reckoned with.   I will take a wild guess and say that China will announce a new alliance with Japan and voice its intention to back the Yen as a major contender for the next global reserve currency with the massive amounts of gold it has been quietly accumulating while simultaneously dumping American dollars in South America in the form of foreign aid.

The U.S. stock market begins to go haywire, and the government, along with the plunge protection team, pulls out all the stops in a heroic effort to artificially stabilize failing stocks.  After a short period of recovery, all hell will break loose when the bond market suddenly crashes due to exponentially increasing defaults on home, auto, and student loans.  The stock market will soon follow and the United States will be hurled into a Grand Depression that makes the early 30's (and end of 2006) seem a golden era of peace and prosperity by comparison. 

Again, European nations will scramble as the the EU's close ties with the U.S. dollar act destabilize the European economy.  Europeans will begin to look more earnestly to the Iranian Oil Bourse to help stabilize the Euro.  The plan will work for a while, but continued political instability in the Middle East and the Caucasus will continue to plague the struggling Euro.  Enter Russia, who rushes to the rescue with the announcement of oil reserves discovered in Siberia so massive as to easily meet the needs of the EU while simultaneously expunging the need for dependence on Middle Eastern oil.   Russia will offer to abandon the rubel as its own currency in exchange for euros should the EU agree to buy its oil exclusively from Russia through its own oil bourse.   The proposition will be met with heavy skepticism and debate among EU members.

While the Europeans hem and haw, the increasing consolidation of money and power in eastern Asia will break into a frenzy as some countries in South America (ex. Bolivia, Venezuela, and maybe Brazil) wholeheartedly abandon the dollar in favor of the yen as their preferred foreign currency exchange.   Simultaneously, civil unrest will reach unparalleled highs in the Middle East as news of losing their previously unchallenged hold on the oil market emboldens various military factions to open defiance of their “elected"  governments.   The unrest will reach such grand proportions that it will encroach heavily on nations of the Caucasus, threatening western Russia and eastern Europe. 

Suddenly, Iran will not look so good to the EU, and the government will make an offer of acceptance to Russia's plan.  But by now, Russia has new plans.  In a sudden turn toward hostility, but in classic form, Russia will renege on its offer, claiming that its oil reserves might be better put toward national defense, especially on the rapidly destabilizing western border, leaving the EU to suffer the consequences of its indecision. 

Meanwhile, back in the U.S., the vast majority of people are still reeling from the shock as they begin to face the fact that their “It will never happen here" belief couldn't change reality after all.  Of course, this will hit boomers the hardest, as they watch their pensions and retirement funds evaporate almost overnight.   Also hit hard will be the younger generation, as they will be suddenly forced to pull their ears out of their I-pods and join the rest of humanity in the emerging global crisis.  Life in the big cities will turn outright deadly, and though many will desire to move to more rural areas, they will be paralyzed by their inability to find work, and the fact that nobody is willing to buy their oversized houses. . . at least not for a price anywhere near what they paid.  The final shock will occur as, for the first time in U.S. history, presidential elections are suspended indefinitely under a declaration of martial law. 

Shortly following the militarization of U.S. domestic affairs, another bombshell will fall as the world witnesses the re-emergence of the Soviet Union.  Perhaps under a different name, but with all the same players who had been quietly waiting in the shadows for just this sort of opportunity.  Nations in the Caucasus will be retaken by the newly declared republic, not by military force, but by economic.  The Soviets will make an another offer for European nations, this time to join the union.  Astonishment will rattle the E.U. as Germany and Poland quickly accept the offer, but all eyes will be focused on Afghanistan, and its massive oil pipeline.

Now, it's India's turn to move as it announces a new willingness to use its nuclear capability.  Feeling encroached upon by all sides, India will again make strange bedfellows, now with Iran and North Korea, forming a loose coalition of nations threating to pull the plug on the entire planet, if things don't simmer down, and soon.

Next comes a pause, as the world takes its first collective breath.

Plus I anticipate a whole spiritual element on the upswing - because taking away familiar routine and comforts will open people up.
