In Steven Eriksons novels "Malazan book of the Fallen" one of his characters talks about darkness briefly - paraphrased here:

"Darkness was pure before Light came to corrupt it."

Puts an interesting spin on things.  And in this world where everything is shown backwards - it makes a lot of sense.  Why by default would "darkness" be a bad thing?
