Sad news from the world of extreme wildlife television. Steve Irwin aka Crocodile Hunter has been killed by a Stingray of all things.

I can't say it's surprising. The guy took so many risks that it always looked like something was going to get him in the end, but it's sad news nonetheless.

"Crocodile Hunter" Irwin dies

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Steve Irwin, the quirky Australian naturalist who won worldwide acclaim, was killed by a stingray barb through the chest on Monday while diving off Australia's northeast coast, emergency officials and witnesses said.

"Steve was hit by a stingray in the chest," said local diving operator Steve Edmondson, whose Poseidon boats were out on the Great Barrier Reef when the accident occurred.

"He probably died from a cardiac arrest from the injury," he said.

Police and ambulance officials later confirmed Irwin had died and said his family had been advised.

Irwin, 44, was killed while filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas.

Haha.. I heard about that today. I wonder who's going to take care of the zoo he owns now.
At least he didn't die from crocodile. That would be embarassing.

I am soo bummed, I really liked that guy! With all the risks he took, its amazing he lasted this long. But still, I never imagined him dying this young.

How unfortunate that the Crocodile Hunter had to die. He loved animals and was an inspiration to all who watched his shows! (If even by appearing to slightly endanger himself at times.)

I loved watching his bright, energetic and enthusiactic attitude towards the animals. He really never seemed to stop going on about them in his happy presentations. One could almost feel the very bond he had with them.

I do not mean to subtract from the solemn nature of his observance however I must propose this one small possibility:

Am I the only one who recognizes the potential for a very simple 'fake death' scenerio? We have a man who was in the 'public eye' so much but especially in a manner where it would seem there would be people almost expecting him to be killed in some way. I would propose that this man was not only smart enough to ensure his own safety in the scenarios portrayed on television but also keen enough to 'put one over' on the 'sleeping masses' so to speak.

Is this unappropriate?

No, it is not inappropriate.  My husband told me he's suspicious as well, even though the's not a "conspiracy theorist" like I am.  smile

My husband is an experienced diver who's participated in dives across the world.  He says he can't imagine how a stingray could have killed Irwin that way.  The odds of it slipping between the ribs and piercing the heart would be amazing.  He says that he'll need to see video of it happenig to believe it.  He also wondered whether Steve faked his death, but couldn't figure out why he would.

One of the stories stated that the barb "pierced" his heart!!  Now that seems a little radical, but supposedly it's all on film. 

I really liked and admired him for all the good he did for animal life and for the  positive vibrations he offered.

Irwin death footage 'terrible'


The underwater video footage of Steve Irwin's death after he was speared in the chest by a stingray was "shocking" his manager reportedly said today.

John Stainton told reporters the footage, which he had handed to police, was the worst thing he had ever seen, Sydney's 2GB radio reported this morning.

"I have seen the footage and it's shocking," Mr Stainton said.

"It's a very hard thing to watch because you're watching somebody die and it's terrible."

Mr Stainton, also a producer and director of Irwin's popular television shows, said the footage showed Mr Irwin pulling the barb out of his chest before losing consciousness.

'The tail came up'

"It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up, and spiked him here (in the chest), and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone.

"That was it. The cameraman had to shut down."

Mr Stainton, who was aboard Mr Irwin's vessel Croc One when the tragedy occurred, said it was likely the television star and naturalist died almost immediately as a result of the stingray's blow.

"(He was) probably a metre coming over the top of it," he said.

"He was underwater. I think, and the coroner's report will say what happened, but I think he died fairly instantly."

Mr Stainton said he was still in disbelief that a stingray could claim his close friend's life.

"He was always on the precipice," he said.

"He always pushed himself to the very limits but I thought he was invulnerable and I think he did too.

For the conspiracy theorists, I find it amazing that nothing can remain without question to you. Some things do occur in life that on face value appear to be one thing, and after close examination are exactly that. There are no alterior motives, no evil intentions, just unfortunate circumstances.

He died loving doing what he was doing, and he even managed to educate some of us along the way. That's the way I hope to go when my time comes.

I loved the guy too, he had a really infectious joy for life.

I don't go for the fake death theory, but I did wonder that so many people watched his shows in amazement but, like me, most people had the same thoughtform shaping 'He's going to get killed one day'.  I reckon that thoughtform was pretty powerful, and  played a part.

The impact on the collective of Steve Irwin's departure has been inspiring.  Usually when someone dies I hear people talk about it for a day, maybe a couple tops.  The reality I see many people living in is one of ADD for lack of a better description.  In other words something happens and its all the talk and then its gone and people are onto the next thing.

For Steve however it has been interesting that even today people I know are still talking about it.  Even more interesting is the fact that its not just "Did you hear about Steve?" they are actually opening up their hearts and discussing him, mourning him and looking to him for inspiration and hope. 

I see people talking about him that really surprise me, people that I thought were very closed, opening up.  Has anyone else felt something 'different' about Steve's passing? How about in relation to the way the collective is reacting? Or is it just me? Haha.
