Topic: How often do you lie?

I did a poll on another message board in the Spirituality and Philosophy Forum and we all learned much about ourselves from participating in it.  Please assist me here, so I can compare and learn a bit more. These were the questions--please discuss the merits of the poll.

A) I lie daily--everyone does.
B) I lie to save myself from embarrassment or to get what I want
C) I lie only at work--performing my regular duties depends on it
D) I do not feel comfortable with lying, yet I feel the blunt truth can hurt people
E) I seldom lie--but life has a rare few times when it keeps people honest
F) I never lie--except this once
(Default) I refuse to participate because this thread is BS

Re: How often do you lie?

When someone asks me a question of sensitive nature, I'll sometimes say "do you want the nice answer, or the honest answer?"

Hehe- let the other person decide whether or not I'll lie- passing the buck ;-)

Re: How often do you lie?

Count me as an E... I seldom lie.  Honesty is a value which I have been working very hard on lately.  My relationships with people have transformed beautifully as a result.

Two huge benefits of honesty...one, it makes available for other uses a lot of energy once wasted in developing, defending and feeling guilt over lies... and two, whole new avenues for exploration within love relationships that are blocked by lies open up with honesty.

Hahaha... I almost never steal either, but I like this quiz and I'm horking it for another forum.   Thanks!!

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great and would suffice.  ~Robert Frost

Re: How often do you lie?

I count mostly as:
D) I do not feel comfortable with lying, yet I feel the blunt truth can hurt people

I think there's a distinction between lying to other people, and lying to yourself. I never lie to myself, I think that's completely wrong and harmful. But I have to lie to other people, either overtly or by omission, when telling the truth would endanger my safety, or prevent me from buying the things I need for my hobbies. There's also a difference between lying to business's and lying socially.

I think lying can be kind of caustic, so there has to be good reason to do it. Lying should be treated like knives, handled safely, kept sharp, to the point, used as tools, and then put away in a safe place when they're no longer needed. I don't believe its good to lie to cover up a mistake or an embarassment, to do that just shows the other person that your not very emotionally evolved. I also feel it's also wrong to lie in relationships, because lying to protect your partner's feelings, feels to me like lying to myself. If your partner can't handle the truth, then you're not in a good relationship.

It would be great if we lived in a world where people didn't need to lie, but we don't. We live in a world where peoples minds are segmented into rigid categories. So this makes communication difficult, because if you tell the truth, then you get pushed into a box where further communication becomes impossible. So lying is a necessary part of good communication skills, especially the further your life is from the accepted social norms.

The most important thing to do when lying, is that you have to be completely accepting of your need to lie before hand, and already have your lie prepared, so you're not put on the spot when the ackward questions come up. Then you have to believe the lie yourself while you say it, as this makes it sound like you're telling the truth, instead of sounding shifty like your lying. If you're lie doesn't work, you have to have additional back-up plan consitant with the lie you already told. So it really is like becoming a character in a play. My partner tells me that I'm quite good at it, but that's because I practice thoughly before I'm put in a situation where I have to lie.

But just blanket lying to other people as a matter of habit, I find distasteful. In my personal life I would rather have a few friends I can be completely honest with, then be friendly with lots of people but have to lie to them. Although with friends for somethings, it's better to just have areas where you don't discuss, and respect each others privacy. Instead of sticking your nose where you're not wanted, and putting your friend in a situation where they have to choose between offending you, or lying to you.

Re: How often do you lie?

I lie, somtimes, but I always feel guilty afterwards. Understanding ones motivation for lying is important though.

I sometimes feel that existing in this world is like living-a-lie. The constant barrage of untruths, half-truths, fallacies and outright lies  make it feel like a Matrix or Hell-realm. This is not to excuse ones own contribution to it, but it lessens the value of real Truth and desensitizes serious minds to the reality of illusion, negating the good.

I don't mind a harsh truth so long as it's verifiable in my own experience.

Re: How often do you lie?

I think I do lie on occasion.

Usually when it spares someone's feelings or someone asks something that is none of their business.

Re: How often do you lie?

I am a truth seeker, so I hate lies, so I do not lie to the fellow good souls or
almost do not lie.

But for the suckers, OPs and alike they receive what they deserve.

Re: How often do you lie?

I agree that the line between tact and dishonesty can be blurry.  Sometimes it can be difficult to be honest, in varying degrees depending on the situation.  I would say I rarely lie, but I often hold back.  I don't want to be like Jim Carrey in "Liar, Liar"!

I rarely lie at work, and if I do it is about something completely insignificant.  A reputation for integrity goes a long way for me at my job and I am not about to compromise it.

Re: How often do you lie?

I dont particularly like any of the available answers, including the default!

I think about this general topic quite a lot. Its a can of worms for me.... so probably best i leave it at that. ( i just backspaced the long answer )

I am intrigued to see how others will respond though.

Q: (L) Whatchu know about that?
A: We know all about that.

The truth is Good; the lie is Evil (Y? Because of reality.)

The act of lying therefore aligns u with the Evil/plugs u into The Food Pyramid.

As far as hurting others feelings, it is the ego - a Foreign Installation - that reacts badly to the truth. Our fellow humans' failure to love the truth makes them unable to resist its (the Foreign Installation's) influence. They r responsible for that failure.

As far as OPs (if there is such a thing), what example r we giving them by our willingness to accomodate that which is not legitimate (in this case, the lie)?

It is possible to live in this world and never lie. cool

We are all Kosh.

Re: How often do you lie?

Hey titmouse_,
Great question, it gets to the heart of "just how STO are you?". I can proudly say I'm an "E" and have been for quite some time. Even then I'm conflicted and want to tell the truth 100.00% of the time. Most times I do.

The real test is  B) I lie to save myself from embarrassment or to get what I want....

The absolute kicker is ( to save myself from prosecution). Find someone who will put right ahead of consequence and you've found yourself a true STO.
