Topic: Something in the water? (pictures)

Filled up our filter jug earlier from the tap, and the water started frothing up everywhere.  Initially I thought maybe some washing liquid had somehow got in the jug.  However it didn't have a smell to it (other than the normal chemicalish smell tap water tends to have).

So I cleaned the jug out, and filled it again - the same thing happened.  So curious I filled up a pint class from the tap only to find the same thing.  The first photo was taken just after the class was filled, and the second photo is about five mins later, after it had settled some.

Not sure what it is - the class was totally clean.  I am not much of a plumber so don't really know if it could be something in the house, or something external.  I can get my dad to look at it at some point though as he is a plumber.  But just wondering if anyone here has any ideas about this?

Yeah; ewwww was my first thought!!

It appears to have cleared up now.  I say "appears" because without any sort of measuring instrument, there is no way to be sure.

I know the filter jugs are a very basic way of filtering water, but I am not inclined to believe they will efficently remove whatever this stuff is.

Well for now - I guess it is back to bottle water again.  Although to be honest I have always used filtered tap water for tea and coffee etc, as it is always boiled before being consumed.  Seems I will be going through a hell of a lot of bottled water then... sad  it's not all that cheap either...

EDIT Can't believe I wrote class instead of glass so many times in the original post!!  Maybe that water has had some wierd effect!! big_smile

Well here in the US we can get a gallon bottle of no-name generic distilled water for roughly a dollar.  How does it compare in England?  (using litres and Euros, of course big_smile  haha)

Are you in NY area?
Since the weather's gone goofy, the famously pure water supply from upstate has been added to it, a component to make it settle...
too much clay in the water from big rainstorms has made the water muddy.

I forget what the additive is but it makes the clay particles bunch up and sink so the water is clear enough to pass inspection.

Saw it in the NY times a few weeks ago...
if it's happening there it's happening else where too.

They say if the weather keeps up like this they will have to build huge purification stations, costing taxpayers millions. Nice huh.

We can get a 5 litre bottle of water for  £1, which is $1.90.  But getting hold of that is pretty much out of the way, and the store doesn't hold a particually big stock.

Elsewhere 5 litre bottles are around  £1.50 which is a fair wack over $2.

Hey Marcus- I have been using distilled water exclusively for about 4 years now, as I just do not trust any water supply.

Thankfully I am on a well, and not a municipal supply, however wellwater can be far worse than city water because it is unmonitored, whatever may end up in the water table may end up in you.

I did alot of reading years ago on the topic, and I saw many instances where pesticides, pharmaceutical and other harmful substances were not fully removed after treatment.

That is when I decided distilled water has to be the safest. Watch for "spring water", many times flouride is added (check labels) and the source may be just filtered city water!

feedbaxlow, I am in upstate NY, all the rain we have had has indeed made the water supplies a little funky, so that only adds to the worry.

Marcus, a buck a gallon is well worth it just for my peace of mind, I also use it for cooking and mixed beverages, so I may go through 2 or more gallons per week, but you can really taste the difference.

Distilled water is 'flat' tasting, as in it really has no taste, but after using it for awhile you will be able to tell it apart from even springwater. It may be worth it to you for your own peace of mind, at twice the cost in the UK even.

transient, I think we would go though about 15 litres+ of water a week.  But still the peace of mind, and better health is worth the cost.  Still it would be nice if we could get water at the same price you guys do.

Anyway - did a bit of investigation, and it seems that a water mains pipe burst in the neighbourhood on the same day as the wierdness in the water.  So I guess something got in the pipe.

However the water company say nothing could have got in the water, and that whatever we saw in the water must have been "trapped air".  Further they even suggested that if the water at the bottom of the glass is clear, then the water is fine...no matter what maybe floating at the top.  I guess they have never tried mixing oil with water then... hmm

Whoa, that's weird. I wonder how many times this happens while an unsuspecting consumer just chugs it down.
It definitely looks like some kind of detergent to make the water more viscous, and hence the formation of lasting bubbles. There's definitely a difference with this and "trapped air", as I see that all the time.
Do you still have the water, or did you dump it out? I would take it to a lab and get it tested, just to make sure. I get a feeling that it was an industrial pollutant dumped into the local water supply. By who? Do you have any chemical processing plants or paper-making facilities? Maybe there was a spill, but I'd definitely take it to be checked, if only it turns out to be for your peace of mind.
