Topic: holy hail storm

there was this brief but very real hail storm in toronto just a few minutes ago -- ya i know, so what -- it's just that i'd never witnessed a hail storm in the summer when the weather is almost 30 degrees outside (i forget what that equates to in farhenheit, but it's warm - very warm) ... the hail storm was very cool though, first there was lightening and thunder - lots of that going on yesterday as well - and then kabloomski - all this hail for like 2-3 min ... big chunky pieces maybe a couple of centimetres in diameter (i witnessed this at Sheppard & Leslie area). there's still thunder and lightening going on though it's stopped raining - there's something very curious / mysterious /wonderful / exciting about this weather - it's electric !

Re: holy hail storm

I just checked on wunderground.com, and in Fahrenheit it's about 66 degrees.   It also shows some swooping low pressure zone going right down over Toronto:  http://www.wunderground.com   I've been in a hailstorm in the middle of summer though, it was June of 1995 in Old Saybrook, Connecticut.  Big hail, the size of golf balls and larger.   It was torrential - broke a tree branch which landed on my car roof and dented it, as well as denting cars with the hail itself.  It happens I guess, but I don't understand the mechanics of it.  Have no meteorological training.  It would be nice to know how weather works, but it's almost becoming moot now that "stuff" can manipulate and control the weather, and being that "stuff" from other realms or whatever can affect what we're seeing!  big_smile

Re: holy hail storm

The rain keeps getting bumped back up into the cold layers, and that forms hail.  The more it keeps getting bumped back up the thicker the layer of ice.  I've heard of hailstones as large as grapefruit.  I would not want to see that in person!  I've seen them up to softball size, and they can do tremendous damage.

Re: holy hail storm

I bet, imagine hails the size of a softball and then a sudden tornado that throws them around like cannonballs. Yikes that would do some serious damage

I realize now that the hail I saw in that one storm I mentioned earlier, (which I said was maybe like the size of golf balls) wasn't actually THIS big.....and this is golf ball size hail.  They were smaller than these here, but yet still large enough to dent cars and bring down tree branches...

Re: holy hail storm

Anyone remember the "thunder-snow" of some months back?  I even remember the Daily Show doing a bit about it because of how ridiculous it seemed.
