You cannot even trust the statistics coming from the school system.  I cannot say I am surprised but I did not know it was this blatantly rigged.  Here is an excerpt from an article I read today"

Overall, the AP found that about 1.9 million students – or about 1 in every 14 test scores – aren't being counted under the law's racial categories. Minorities are seven times as likely to have their scores excluded as whites, the analysis showed.

I am currently going to UCSC. I am a first year with a 3.6 gpa, but I have absolutely no motivation to even pass my two hard classes this quarter (Last part of General Chemistry and Multivariable Calculus.) I am so tired of college. It does not resonate with me at all. All it does is wear me out and stress me out. I am considering just failing those two classes at this moment with two weeks left of school. It is still possible for me to pass them, but I plan on dropping out after this quarter anyways, so whats the point in trying? If I receive two Fs (my other class, French, is a pass/no pass class which I am easily passing) I will still have a 2.5 GPA.

My question is this... do employers care at all about a first years GPA in college?

Instead of sticking it out in college, which would probably make me go insane and drain me spiritually, I am going to quit and work in a warehouse during the summer 50+ hours a week making around $1600-2000 a month. With this money I plan on investing in gold and silver. I don't plan on working there forever. I consider it a temporary thing. I am going to live as cheaply as humanly possible and maybe try to start an online business on ebay. I read about a program you can download (it isn't free) that scans all the keywords people type when they search ebay. So I am thinking about researching the best ways to sell items on ebay and then selling items that receive the most traffic. So thats my plan and it is of course subject to change.

I recently read a book by Robert Kiyosaki, (author of Rich Dad Poor Dad.) The book is called Prophecy "Why the Biggest Stock Market Crash in History Is Still Coming... And How You Can Prepare Yourself and Prophet From It." It was a very good book in my opinion. It explained how almost everyone in America invests in 401k plans and mutual funds because they think they are good safe investments. The book goes on to say how when the baby boom generation starts to retire, and there is little or no social security and no medicare, they will start selling their 401k plans and mutual funds in masse. This will trigger everyone else to panic and start selling theirs.

I read spiritual articles about how not to worry about money, and how all my needs will be met in the future. But I feel it would be a good idea to start preparing for this, I don't think money will magically fall from the sky into my hands, although it is possible. I know the future is so uncertain. I just don't know anymore. I don't feel in control of my life. I feel like I am just letting everything affect me and not being the one affecting my environment and my path in life. (This is probably a symptom of feeling imprisoned in school.) Sorry I kind of swayed away from the original purpose of this thread, but I think everything I expressed here is relative on atleast some level.

Hello Bounce. 

I understand your viewpoint on school.  I've just experienced that this year (my first year of univercity) and although I crammed and barely passed my first term, I ended up in the same un-motivated state again next term, except that time I didn't cram, and didn't pass.  I felt that school really had no significance (at least the program I was in) to my life.  Thus next year I plan to go back once more and study the Arts.

I do not know if the employers care about grades during the first year.  Maybe some employers are different than others.

We all know school is a big scam, but the way the system is built makes me feel frustrated at times.  Either go to school, get a degree then get a high paying job so you can FINALLY save up and retire.  Garbage! OR work at low paying jobs that suck all the energy out of you.

I think the best way is to pull back within your self and look for answers there, and then you could probably by-pass the establishment and attract certain opportunities or engaged in healthy creative projects that can build revenue.  So if you don't feel in control - take back control.  Take time to yourself, ponder, meditate and figure out what you really want to do. 

Financial situations and education are always a sticky subject, at least from my experience.  The best way that I've found works for me is to take one step at a time and know that in the end everything will work out - so far it has! smile

To be wealthy you need to be wealthy in all areas of your life. Quotiing James Ray, you need to be wealthy in five areas: 'relationships, spiritual, mental (includes intellectual and emotional), physical and financial.' I think that life should be abundant.

School and university is a tough one. I think that most of the stuff being taught in those institutions aren't very stimulating for me anyway. But, if you choose to find another path of learning, for example one with a mentor or independently, then you should keep increasing in knowledge if you wish to function in this society. So in your mental area, try and learn something that society would deem useful as a backup, as well as focusing on your spiritual path if that's what you want. If possible go into something that you enjoy and love as well as being useful to others in tick-tock. Society does suck right now, but what can you do about it? Change yourself, you cannot change others. I think that if you discipline yourself in these tough times and you will grow very fast.

I recommend watching 'The Secret' if you guys haven't yet. There is a section on it about financial prosperity. Additionally, you can read 'Creating Money' by Sanaya Roman. It provides a practical guide to being abundant from a spiritual perspective.

Concerning going to college:

I am in my mid 50's, so look at this with a bit of hindsight.

The only reason, this day and age, i can think of for going to college is social.  It gives you a chance to meet people and selecting a school, or your path once in a school, can allow you to cut through the masses and meet folks that you can share interests with.  Far from "deciding what you want to be when your grow up"; before going to college you should should look hard at yourself & figure our what types of people you share in common.  This also tells you a lot about yourself.  What types of people energize you?

There may very well be better ways of meeting those people, in fact, that is very likely.  But, college is one option depending on you.

Other than that, there is NO reason for college that I can think of.  If you need to discover yourself, or to expand your horizons... spend the money on travel instead.  If there is a topic you like, there are better ways to learn it... shop around.

Myself, knowing myself as I do now, I would tend bar (or something) & save enough money to buy an abandoned farm WAY AWAY from the beaten path & homestead.  This is now what I am doing.  I'd also invest in a satt. dish so that I had access to the internet.  I'd then pursue a simple life (homesteading actually is not simple), and spend my winters learning through the internet.

Most important book to read before any of this... Walden by Thoreau.  I school has killed your desire to read... REKINDLE IT.  It is your key to many, many things.

Or something like that, smile.

Oh, one more thing.

If "wealth" is defined as being truely Happy, then college is far from a good investment in your future Happiness.  Only you, the real you, can define what happiness is... for you.  Culture cannot define it for you.  You must throw all that baggage away.

But, I think you guys know all this...

I remember a moment from Kindergarten (what does this word mean, anyhow?), I can't quite recall the entire situation, all I know is that I was supposed to write down "television" (probably next to a picture of one) and as I was writing "t.e.l.e.v.-" the "Teacher assistant" interrupted me and TOLD me to write down "T.V", even though I knew how to fully spell the word, I remember erasing it and re-writing the abbreviation.

Dumbing-down in action folks. I remember the feeling of being disgusted and confused, even as a child!

I've had the same attitude for school my entire life...
