Topic: Unexpected sounds on computer speakers

Today I was working on my computer, and I suddenly heard a voice come through my speakers.  It spoke a single unintelligible word that sounded like it may have been German.  An hour or so later, I heard a thunderclap sound effect through my speakers.  I didn't have any of my music programs open, and I wasn't on sites that had embedded sound/ music. 

This isn't the first time this has happened, either.  It's happened several times in this house.

Could this be sound transmitted from a point outside my house?  Could this be accidental (just picking up noise randomly)?  Is there a computer virus that causes this?   I'm hoping it's not something sinister.

Did you have a cell phone in the room? They often emit signals that can be heard through computer speakers.

I just checked, and yes, my cell phone is in the room.  Thanks for the info!

How does this work?  What signals is it picking up and transmitting?

Is it possible that your computer security has been comprimised?

I've heard a few fun stories, one was where a hacker comprimised a Windows computer, which was net connected, and had also a webcam attached. The hacker was able via the webcam to see the computer user, and then remotely they would do things to mess with the person. Such as ejecting the cd-rom drive, or sending a popup message window telling the user they were fat and ugly, etc. Then they would enjoy the user's confused and bewildered reactions via the webcam. So I'm throwing this out there as a possibility...

Thanks for the replies, guys!  I'm currently scanning w/ Dr. Web (I have microsoft anti-spyware, but I suspect that it sucks). 

I suspect that "silk" on one of the threads I was pointed to had the answer-- unshielded speaker wires.  I have the surround-sound kind mounted on a wall that faces the street, so that's probably what I'm picking up. 

Still, it's a spooky thing to have happen when you're visiting MILAB and mind control sites!

Co-incidence wink So dark is the con of the empty wires and such (and no, its not an anagram) big_smile I just finished watching da-vinci code for the 2nd time, i'm probably gonna go for one last view. Meh, who knows.

Anyway, Get a tin can and cut open one end and put your wire on the other end and use it as an antenna and you can probably pick up all sorts of weird transmissions big_smile I could get some strange central europaen pop channel on it from my home TV big_smile
