Topic: The Problewm with B6

I thought this to be an interesting article.

Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION: THE B6 BOMBER STORY

What the Nutritionists, Doctors and Big Pharma Didn't
Tell You About "Vitamin B6" and What They Didn't Know

B6, THE WINTER PEOPLE, AND L-TRYPTOPHAN

Several months ago I wrote a series of articles about Winter People and the Three Circadian Clocks in the human body. I mentioned that one of the primary chemicals which operates the circadian clocks was made in the brain from tryptophan in the diet. Tryptophan in the bloodstream is converted into the neurochemicals serotonin in the morning when you wake up, and then is converted into melatonin in the evening to make you sleep. Thus the very same dietary chemical, tryptophan, is used by the body to raise and lower the brain temperature to create the sleep/wake cycle.

I also mentioned that surplus "vitamin B6" in the diet completely disrupts the circadian rhythms. Many readers wrote to ask how could so many people have surplus B6 in their diet. What I will show you here is that most people unknowingly actually get about 10 times the RDA for B6 even if they don't take any vitamins or diet supplements. And if they do take daily vitamins with B6 they are almost toxic and morbid because of the surplus. This is a tremendous health disaster caused by false food advertisements and profiteering. In fact, B6 is not a vitamin and it should never be used in the diet. There is no RDA for B6 - that false number was incorrectly based on the RDA for Niacin and not B6.

FIRST DISCOVERY

I first discovered the problem with B6 about 20 years ago. I found that B6 destroys all the tryptophan in the diet by converting it directly into the vitamin Niacin while still in the bloodstream right after ingesting the B6. By doing that, none of the tryptophan can later enter the brain and become converted into either serotonin or melatonin to operate the circadian clocks. The sudden excess of Niacin caused by the B6 in the bloodstream is simply wasted and peed away.

High levels of serotonin in the brain raises the brain temperature, causing a sense of wakefulness, well-being and satisfaction. It is the feedback mechanism when eating food to tell the brain you have had enough to eat -- you are satisfied and don't need to eat any more. Without the feedback mechanism tryptophan, the individual has low levels of serotonin and has "a brain chemical imbalance" and is diagnosed as ADD or ADHD, obese, hyperactive, needing Prozac etc (along with a very long list of related mental and physical disorders). All caused simply by a surplus of B6 in the diet and the resulting disruption of the circadian rhythms. It is the primary cause of the recent "epidemic" of obesity. Obesity is NOT caused by simply eating fast foods. The sudden rise in obesity around the world "by coincidence" started about 20 years ago, at the same time as most prepared food makers started adding extra B6 and other vitamins to all their food products.

THE FOOD MAKERS GO BONKERS

About 20 years ago, most food manufacturers started the trick of adding vitamins to enhance their food advertisements. It started when Ovaltine added vitamins up the wazoo to compete with Borden's chocolate milk. This was to overcome mother's concerns about chocolate milk having added sugar. But Ovaltine with vitamins was "good for you" according to their advertisements. So other food companies started doing the same thing. That was a big mistake.

In 1985 I started reading the list of ingredients on most food products. By 1990 all and every breakfast cereal had added 100 % of the RDA for B6, along with most other vitamins. It is also added to all flour products as "enriched flour" and a whole plethora of other food products. B6 is added, since it is a simple and stable synthetic chemical which does not degrade with age or cooking. It is also very cheap and adding 100% RDA costs almost nothing. But it is NOT a vitamin. It is not found in any natural food. And there is no natural form of B6. It is not a food. It's just a chemical.

Thus B6 is the only "vitamin" which is neither natural nor a vitamin. By 2006, of all the hundreds of commercial breakfast cereals in a box on the market shelves, only one remains a true food product which does not add any vitamins. I leave it as an exercise for the reader to see if you can find that one cereal box on your store shelf which has no added "vitamins." And if you do -- buy it and try it. Let me know if your kids like it. It has no B6.

THE HISTORY OF USING B6 IN FOODS

B6 was simply used since about 1920 as a way to enhance Niacin levels in the American diet. Low Niacin levels had caused the then prevalent American disease called Pellagra, a bleeding of the lips, gums and loose teeth. The result of that disease, caused by lack of Niacin in the diet, was a debilitating condition which led to other diseases. But natural Niacin quickly degrades when left on the shelf. So the USDA told food makers to add the simple synthetic chemical B6 to raise the level of Niacin in diet, since it instantly converted dietary tryptophan in the bloodstream into Niacin. In the 1920's most nutritionists assumed that tryptophan was useless and had no function in the body. So using it as a precursor for Niacin seemed to be a health benefit. That was a horrible mistake.

In the 1920's, nobody noticed that tryptophan, which does not ever enter body cells but just remained in the bloodstream by itself, while all the other amino acids were absorbed into the body cells, was not just a precursor for Niacin, but was also the only precursor for serotonin and melatonin in the brain. That wasn't discovered until the 1970's. But by then the "fiction" that B6 was a vitamin precursor for making Niacin was too well entrenched in nutrition theories. B6 was recommended as a food supplement and added to almost everything.

THE MASSIVE OVERDOSING OF THE WORLD

It's a long story, which I will tell in a later article. But the average person in America, and now throughout the world, who eats a bowl of cereal for breakfast, a McBurger bun for lunch and other snacks and desserts, gets about 1,000% or ten times the RDA for B6. That is an extreme overdose of B6. This stops all the natural tryptophan in the diet from ever getting into the brain, to become the neurochemicals serotonin and melatonin. B6 is THE SOURCE of the so-called "chemical imbalance in the brain" which affects about half the population. If you were ever diagnosed as have a "brain chemical imbalance," it was most probably caused by the excess B6 in your diet.

Seventeen years ago I worked with a professor and a group of his grad students at the University of Ohio. They were excited about doing some experiments to confirm my discoveries. But the school term ended before they could complete their experiments and I lost contact with the professor. That was before the Internet, and I was using the Compuserve Medical Forum to communicate with those Docs at Ohio. Those were the days when AOL and Compuserve were competitors. But AOL seemed to win everything, and in the explosive growth of other ISP's connecting to the Internet, the Compuserve Medical Forum simply disappeared.

B6 DESTROYS THE BENEFITS OF MOTHER'S MILK

I also, 15 years ago, worked with some pediatricians. I told them about all the new synthetic powdered mother's milk formulas (Similac and many others) now being fed to babies, containing surplus B6, and that it was the major cause of the increasing problem around the world of colic (crying, over eating and swollen stomach) and obesity in infants. They were amazed and had never heard of that before. But it sure seemed to make sense, when I explained it to them. I proposed that experiments could be done with baby formulas which could be made without B6 and comparing the results to standard baby formulas. So far, that experiment has not been done, but the results are easy to predict.

There is no B6 in natural mother's milk. Mother's milk is the highest dietary source for tryptophan. Nobody, other than me, has ever explained why mother's milk is so high in tryptophan. It is the biochemical method found in all mammals, which naturally runs the baby's eating feedback mechanism and kick starts the neonate baby's sleeping/eating circadian rhythm cycles. With surplus synthetic B6 in the baby's diet, the normal circadian rhythms are disrupted and the baby overeats and becomes obese. Obesity becomes a chronic lifestyle and disease.

WHAT IT MEANS TO OVERDOSE ON B6

The bottom line -- almost all of the dietary problems, mental and physical disorders, which are "inexplicably" becoming increasingly common around the world, are all simply due to a huge surplus of the synthetic chemical called B6 in the modern diet. Notice I don't even call it a vitamin, since it is not and never has been a vitamin, but simply a very cheap synthetic chemical food additive which is used in product advertisements to falsely promote the food product.

Thus when I say, "too much B6 interferes with serotonin and leads to obesity" that is only a very small part of the increasing major debilitating health problems now occurring in most children and adults.

I have already researched enough material and done enough experiments to fill a research journal which I call "The B6 Bomber." But, if you notice, I do research and conduct studies and publish articles in a large variety of areas. So the B6 story has been on the back burner for about 10 years, while I publish much more critical research. But be patient. Everything in its own time...

Re: The Problewm with B6

Interesting, just goes to show that its best to get your vitamins naturally.
I dont like it when they add synthetic vitamins to food like with the kids cereals and stuff.

Its not like we are fractions of the whole but rather versions of the whole.

Sorry, but I strongly suspect bad science here.  Is this article on the net?  If so, would you provide a link to this and his previous artlcle he cites?

Thanks in advance.  I'm keeping an open mind here, I just wish to investigate these pretty strong claims against B-6 thoroughly.

Re: The Problewm with B6

Aquarius, I searched:

http://www.brojon.org/frontpage/bomber/bomber1.html

Hmm my sleep cycles are always abnormal so I'm wondering if this could be true, even partially. I finished off a bottle of b-6 about a week ago, because it's supposed to help when taken before sleep to enhance the vivid-ness of dreams. The vitamin supplument I have has listed b-6 at 3750% of RDA. I don't eat breakfast cereal, but I am getting a lot of this. So beside trying to remove specific supplemented sources of b-6 from the diet, is there a safe tryptophan supplement to raise the blood level or is that a bad idea? I seem to remember some fiasco about L-tryptophan years ago but I barely remember. Hmm since there's so many balances and feedback loops, tinkering with something can unbalance something somewhere else...

Realistically most ppl are eating some restaurant and processed industrial age "food" products, and will get some level of b6 into their diet. I've tried to be raw vegan but it's really tough for me to maintain, but I do think energetically it is easier to wake up/sleep, and this is when my diet is 100% fruits and veggies without any processed products. That kinda makes me think there might be something to this claim. But it probably is a good idea to check around a bit and not make bit alteration in the diet based on a single article that doesn't include any references to further research.

Okay, Now I have a point of contention here...

the article wrote:

In fact, B6 is not a vitamin and it should never be used in the diet.

Now this is based on data contained in the following nutrition site:
http://www.nutritiondata.com/

The article states specifically that there is no naturally occuring form of B6. However, when using this site to look up nutritional profiles on fruits such as Apples and Bananas (raw), they show > 0.0mg >0% RDA for B6. So that is very much a contradiction to the article, at least on the surface. It looks like there is a natural form of B6. So what's the rest of the story?

Re: The Problewm with B6

Thanks for the links, Sinaptix.

My experience with B-6 is that it, taken with zinc, really helps combat my natural propensity toward depression.  So I supplement with B-6 daily, yet my sleep cycles are normal and regular.  I have no trouble either falling asleep or sleeping deeply.

Yet my understanding of biochemistry and nutritional supplementation is incomplete, and I always try to keep an open mind.  We have been lied to so much, much of it intentional, but many lies are unintentional.

I am definitely going to look into this further.

Re: The Problewm with B6

Okay, well, I guess I'm confused.  I'll outline my confusion below:

But it is NOT a vitamin. It is not found in any natural food. And there is no natural form of B6. It is not a food. It's just a chemical. .....Thus B6 is the only "vitamin" which is neither natural nor a vitamin.

Okay, maybe I'm missing something here, but I've got my copy of "Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements" by Michael T. Murray, MD  in front of me, open to Chapter 11, page 100, titled "Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) and it lists all the *natural* sources of B6, and their amounts in milligrams per 3 1/2 oz, including (but not limited to):

Sunflower seeds     1.25
Walnuts                   .73
Lentils, dry              .60
Lima beans, dry       .58
Brown rice               .55
Bananas                  .51
Avocados                .42
Kale                       .30
Spinach                  .28
Turnip Greens         .26
Peppers, Sweet       .26
Potatoes                 .25
Raisins                   .24

....and, well, you get the idea.   So, how can B6 be "just a chemical" that's "not found in any natural food" when apparently, according to the book I have, it's found in at least 32 items of naturally occurring grains, fruits, veggies and legumes?

Is there then both a synthetic version AND natural version of B6?

And if so, is he solely referring to a synthetic chemical masquerading as the naturally occurring B6?  If he is, then he needs to brush up more on his stuff and make a distinction, as it stands, he seems to either be unaware, or deliberately not mentioning the fact that there is naturally occurring B6 found in many common foods.

The "Encyclopedia..." book goes on to say this about B6:

"The human body requires vitamin B6 for the proper functioning of more than 60 different enzymes.  It plays a vital role in the multiplication of all cells.  Vitamin B6 also plays a critical role in brain chemistry because it is involved in the manufacture of all amino acid neurotransmitters, e.g., serotonin, dopamine, melatonin, epinephrine, norepinephrine, etcetera).

Yet according to this article, B6 "destroys all the tryptophan in the diet by converting it directly into the vitamin Niacin while still in the bloodstream right after ingesting the B6. By doing that, none of the tryptophan can later enter the brain and become converted into either serotonin or melatonin to operate the circadian clocks...."

The book says that B6 is involved in the manufacture of these neurotransmitters, yet this article is saying it inhibits tryptophan and thus *destroys* all of those neutrotransmitters.

I guess I'm confused.  We have two polar opposite conflicting views here. Either the book is sadly mistaken, or this article is.  !    But possibly the mistake lies in not acknowledging (or possibly not being aware of) the natural form of B6?

It is the primary cause of the recent "epidemic" of obesity. Obesity is NOT caused by simply eating fast foods. The sudden rise in obesity around the world "by coincidence" started about 20 years ago, at the same time as most prepared food makers started adding extra B6 and other vitamins to all their food products......But the average person in America eats a bowl of cereal for breakfast, a McBurger bun for lunch and other snacks and desserts, gets about 1,000% or ten times the RDA for B6.

Actually, I do think the rise in eating prepared food and fast food IS to blame.  B6 as the sole culprit sounds fishy to me.  Unless again, there is a distinction between a synthetic chemical masquerading as B6, versus naturally occurring B6.....which again, he swears doesn't exist, even though there's a book here in front of me that says it does.

What he's also not mentioning is how it's not just the McBurger bun they're eating....it's the huge fatty burger dripping with cheese and bacon, the large fries cooked in beef tallow and oil, and the 32 ounce Coke they're downing with it, and yes, the fatty snacks and desserts, vending machine food, more drive thru on the way home.....pre-prepared packaged junkie "dinners" and other assorted foods...etc. and so on.   People eat this way now as the norm.....this was not the norm 30 years ago.   And sure, B6 could be a culprit.....again, if he's referring to a totally synthetic chemical and not the B6 that does occur naturally in nature.

But to say that "Obesity is NOT caused by simply eating fast foods" is complete hooey.   Of course it is. Anybody with two neurons firing knows how junky and fatty fast food and prepared food and desserts are.  I'm skinny with a high metabolism, but if I *needed* to get chubby very quickly, I know that all I have to do is to start eating a whole lot of fast food, then watch out.  wink   Honestly, come on, you know?

Anyway, something seems off about this theory.   If he's going to make a case against B6, then he needs to rectify his claim that there is no naturally occurring B6, because there apparently is;  then, he needs to clarify whether there is a completely synthetic chemical masquerading as naturally occurring B6 and whether that's his actual target culprit;  then, not make silly statements that America's rise in obesity does not correlate to the country's rise in junkie food eating habits.

Re: The Problewm with B6

It is always the same…
The difference between poison and medicine is dosage.

Vitamins are very good for us, but do not overdose!
Do a good research before taking supplements and or go
to a doctor.

A lot of doctors do not like vitamins because they make
people healthy and healthy population = less sickness = less clients = less money

Re: The Problewm with B6

If B6 could help with dream lividity and help me gain weight, it would be a miracle.  I can't gain a pound to save my life.  tongue

But yea, back when I used to read books, I got the same type of info Lyra posted.  B6 was part of some of the best natural foods one can eat.  Of course, everyone should do their own research.

Another thing came to mind when reading the article.  This is just personal observations here.  I'm no medical doctor, nor would ever stoop to that level.  But I've taken Niacin straight and it is the only vitamin (I know of) that causes a reaction within 15 minutes.  Severe physical heat, itching and redness.  I got a couple friends to take it one time and they were quite annoyed with me after about 15 minutes.  big_smile  The article says that it turns that T-thingamachemical into Niacin "right after injesting B6".  If it did that I would notice it and wouldn't ever take it again.  That itching and heat is under the skin and annoying as all hell.  But, like I said, just my observations.

Do your own homework, as always.  For me personally, I don't care.  The body is fun to play with.  And extremely resilent to boot.  Thank you all for the reminder to take my B6 cuz I'm bad about remembering that stuff.

Awwwwwww . . . poor baby . . . can't gain a pound to save his life. I'm sure there are several people who would be willing to sacrifice THEIR cellulite for your cause . . .

Years ago I took some supplement with niacin in it right before a company Christmas party. When I pulled into the parking lot, I felt the notorious niacin "flush" coming on. I almost turned around and went back home to save myself the embarrassment, but the free food thing had more pull (hence the cellulite...).

When I sat down at the table, the GM was teasing me about having gone to a "fake and bake" (tanning salon) right before the party because of how I looked. I almost went along with this scenario, knowing that it would be far less complicated than explaining biochemical reactions within the human body, but I realized the effect would fade, and so would my story. So I owned up to the situation, confused a lot of people, and learned some more humility in the meantime. Shortest "tan" I ever had . . .

Re: The Problewm with B6

Fellow members,

I posted the article on B6 vitamin because it was so odd and it went against the grain of everything I know about nutrition, specifically B6.  I have done several searches looking for confirmation with no success.  I finally e-mailed the author of the article and I am waiting for a response.  Here is the e-mail I sent:

Mr Smith,

I read your article on vitamin B6 and found it quite interesting.  Unfortunately, I have tried to get more information concerning the issues associated with B6 with no apparent success.  every internet search came up the same:  B6 is a naturally occuring compound which the body needs for many reasons.  I understand that this information comes directly from the acccepted guidelines established by USDA (and other research facilities) many moons ago but it is all the public information I can get my hands on.  Could you provide links to sources outside your article that support your theory?  Your reply is deeply appreciated.

Regards,

XXXXXX

I will share whatever information Mr. Smith supplies............If he does answer the e-mail.
