Mahathir bin Mohamad, outgoing prime minister of Malaysia, accuses leading democratic nations of terrorising the world. He seemed to be referring to the USA, Israel, and Australia.

In 2003, Mahathir spoke to the Non-Aligned Movement in Kuala Lumpur, and as part of his speech, said: "If innocent people who died in the attack on Afghanistan and those who have been dying from lack of food and medical care in Iraq are considered collaterals, are the 3,000 who died in New York, and the 200 in Bali also just collaterals whose deaths are necessary for operations to succeed?"

I have seen this speach popping up as trigger event in the past. Seems significant for the current timeframe

Bush does not rule out nuclear strike against Iran

April 19, 2006, 10:54 AM (GMT+02:00)

The US president said he would discuss Iran’s nuclear activities with China’s president Hu Jintao in Washington this week. Asked if options included planning a nuclear strike, President Bush replied: "All options are on the table. We want to solve this issue diplomatically and we’re working hard to do so.”

Iran is also turning up the verbal heat. Taking a salute at a military parade in Tehran, its president again declared its nuclear program would go ahead and threatened to “cut off the hands of any aggressors.”

American, Russian, Chinese and European officials meeting in Moscow failed to agree on ways to pressure Iran to give up its plans to accelerate uranium enrichment. They do not see eye on either preventive or punitive measures. Russia and China oppose tough measures, insisting on a negotiated solution. They are all waiting for the ElBaradei report due by April 28 on Iran’s compliance with UN Security Council call to halt uranium enrichment – even though Tehran has publicly spurned this injunction.

The man who says he sat in judgment on murdered hostage Kenneth Bigley

Ian Cobain in Istanbul
Thursday April 20, 2006
The Guardian

A senior al-Qaida terrorist in custody in Turkey has claimed he was a member of the gang that abducted and murdered the British hostage Kenneth Bigley, the Guardian has learned.
Louia Sakka, a Syrian associate of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the organisation's leader in Iraq, maintains that he presided over a mock trial of Mr Bigley shortly before the 62-year-old was beheaded.

Sakka made the confession while being questioned about his alleged role in suicide bomb attacks against four targets in Istanbul, including the British consulate general and the local headquarters of the HSBC bank, in which 61 people died and more than 600 were injured.

He was arrested after a later explosion ripped through the bomb factory he had constructed inside an apartment overlooking the Mediterranean at the resort of Antalya, where he was planning to attack an Israeli cruise liner.

Sakka's defence lawyer says the terrorist has repeated his claims about his involvement in Mr Bigley's murder to him, and is convinced they are true. "My client has been a warrior for Islam for the last 10 years," said the lawyer, Osman Karahan.

So far, however, Sakka has refused to say who carried out the murder, or reveal the whereabouts of Mr Bigley's body.

Although Sakka is thought to have been in Iraq at the time of Mr Bigley's murder, and is believed to have close links to Zarqawi, his claim is difficult to verify. Foreign Office officials were unaware of the claim until contacted by the Guardian and are now seeking to interview him in prison in Istanbul. Mr Bigley's brother, Phil, said: "Anything that would help with the closure of this matter would be welcome."

Sakka, 33, is accused of bankrolling the bomb attacks in Istanbul in November 2003 with $160,000 allegedly handed to him by Zarqawi. Turkish authorities discovered he had slipped in and out of the country at least 55 times, using 18 different identities, and say there is evidence that he underwent plastic surgery on several occasions to change his appearance.

Sakka claims to have met Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan, says he provided false passports for some of the September 11 attackers, and that he fought with insurgents in Falluja.

Prosecutors in Istanbul say he was a member of a group that beheaded a Turkish truck driver in Iraq, while Jordanian authorities suspect he was involved in a plot to bomb hotels and tourist sites around Amman on New Year's Eve 1999.

Sakka admits that he was intending to attack the cruise liner but denies any role in the Istanbul attacks.

Branch Davidians getting out of prison
Armed standoff ended in inferno 13 years ago

Wednesday, April 19, 2006 Posted: 2234 GMT (0634 HKT)

WACO, Texas (AP) -- Thirteen years after the Branch Davidians' armed standoff with federal agents ended in an inferno that killed nearly 80 people, six of the remaining sect members are about to get out of prison.

Most of those who will be freed over the next two months escaped from the compound near Waco as it burned to the ground on April 19, 1993 .

The fireball erupted 51 days after a shootout that broke out when federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents tried to arrest religious leader David Koresh for stockpiling guns and explosives.

The six men went to federal prison for manslaughter, weapons offenses or both in connection with the shootout, which left four federal agents and six Davidians dead.

Once the men are out, they will be on supervised release for three to five years. Among other things, they will be barred from associating with one another.

A seventh Davidian is also still behind bars but is not scheduled for release until next year.

One of the six, Paul Gordon Fatta, said he remains angry about the government's actions.

"They needed their pound of flesh, so they took the survivors and put them on trial. Somebody had to pay," Fatta, 48, told The Associated Press by telephone.

Koresh and nearly 80 followers, including two dozen children, died in a blaze that survivors say was ignited by tear gas sprayed into the compound buildings from military tanks. Authorities claim the Davidians committed suicide by setting the fire and shooting themselves.

Fatta is to be released next month in San Diego, where he was moved to a halfway house last year and now works at a restaurant. He was not at the compound during the standoff and was at a gun show in Austin during the shootout with the ATF. He said he will live with his family after his release.

"I'm proud of my friends, and it was a privilege for me to have gone there to study the Bible, regardless of what the world thinks," Fatta said. "If I had it to do all over again, I would do the same thing."

Jaime Castillo, who is to be released next month from a Los Angeles halfway house, said he plans to remain there and try to rebuild his life by forming another band -- which is how he met Koresh in 1988 -- or by working as a personal trainer.

The 37-year-old Castillo said he might visit the compound site, where a few survivors still meet for Bible study each weekend.

In 1994 in San Antonio, 11 Davidians went on trial; all were acquitted of murder and conspiracy to commit murder. However, five were convicted of voluntary manslaughter and weapons charges and three were convicted on weapons charges.

A 12th Davidian pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and testified against the others; she was sentenced to three years and was released in 1996.

The federal judge sentenced most to 40 years but in 2000 reduced most terms to 15 years after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned his decision. One of the eight was sentenced to five years on a weapons charge and got out in 1997.

Jane McKeehan of Johnson City, Tennessee, whose 28-year-old son Todd McKeehan was one of the ATF agents killed, said she and her family have tried to focus on their son and not think too much about the Davidians.

"It is in our minds every day; it completely changes your life," McKeehan said.

"We're Christians, and we know we're going to see Todd again, so we try to focus on the good," she added. "He was doing what he wanted to do and was adamant about making it a better world."

Re: April 21, 2006

Friday April 21, 2:43 PM
Jury poised to get September 11 death penalty case

The US government admitted there was no proof to back Zacarias Moussaoui's dramatic courtroom confession that he was to have been a key player in the September 11 attacks.

Prosecutors meanwhile presented the final evidence in the trial, laced with emotion since it opened on March 6, in a bid to debunk defense claims the Al-Qaeda plotter is a paranoid schizophrenic so he should not be put to death.

Judge Leonie Brinkema told jurors they would be sent out to start deliberating Monday on the fate of Moussaoui, the only man tried in the United States in connection with the 2001 attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people.

As the trial drew to a close, defense lawyers dipped into the pain left by the world's deadliest terror strikes, in a bid to blunt harrowing testimony from other grief-stricken relatives who testified for the prosecution.

The most startling revelation Thursday came as defense lawyers tried to undercut Moussaoui's claim that he and British shoebomber Richard Reid were to have hit the White House with a fifth hijacked jet in the 2001 attacks.

Information on Reid was contained in a stipulation agreed between defense and prosecution lawyers and read out in court by defense lawyer Alan Yamamoto.

"To date, there is no information available to indicate that Richard Reid had pre-knowledge of the 9/11 attacks, or was instructed by the Al-Qaeda leadership to conduct an operation in coordination with Moussaoui," the document said.

The statement said that while the 19 September 11 hijackers were in the United States before the attacks, Reid was travelling between Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Netherlands, Israel and Turkey.

"It is highly unlikely that Reid was part of this operation," the declaration said, attributing the comment to two unnamed FBI analysts.

There was no explanation of where the information came from: unlike other stipulated testimony in the trial, jurors were not told to assume it represented what Reid would have said had he been called into court.

Moussaoui's claim, made from the witness stand on March 27, conflicted with all previous knowledge of the September 11 attacks -- and with his own earlier denials that he had no role in the attacks.

It was seen as a key factor in the jury's decision of April 3, that Moussaoui was eligible for the death penalty, over prosecution claims that his "lies" while in jail in August 2001 let the September 11 attacks go forward.

Defense lawyers had asked Brinkema to summon Reid from a top-security jail in the United States to testify. The reasons why he did not appear are still under seal.

Prosecutors called a forensic psychologist to rebut the main defense argument that Moussaoui is a paranoid schizophrenic, and so should be spared, and spend the rest of his life in jail.

Dr. Raymond Patterson gave the final testimony of the marathon trial.

"Can you tell us to a reasonable degree of medical certainty as to whether the defendant suffers from schizophrenia?" asked prosecutor David Novak.

"My opinion is that Mr. Moussaoui does not suffer from schizophrenia and has never suffered from schizophrenia," Patterson said.

He also concluded, unlike clinical psychologists called by the defense, that Moussaoui did not suffer from delusions, deciding instead that Moussaoui may have some non-specified personality disorder.

Under court rules, September 11 family members were not permitted to comment on the sentence to be handed Moussaoui, the only man tried in the United States over the 2001 attacks.

But their testimony at the climax of the defense case is a sign that they oppose the government's drive to execute him.

Jennifer Glick of New Jersey, whose brother Jeremy Glick was on hijacked Flight 93 which crashed in Pennsylvania, was asked by defense lawyers how she would like her brother remembered.

"I would like us to celebrate his life. I would like us to remember that the goodness he showed, we all have inside us," she said.

Adele Welty watched on television as the twin towers of the World Trade Center were toppled, with her son Timothy, a New York fireman, inside one of them.

"I want him to be remembered as a very lovely man, not just as a statistic, as someone who loved his life. He was someone who had a great reverence for life, even the smallest of God's creatures," she said.

The victims' testimony came six days after Moussaoui said courtroom displays of grief were "disgusting" and he wished it could be September 11 every day.

Massive earthquake rocks Russia's Kamchatka peninsula

A massive 7.9-magnitude earthquake rocked Russia's northeastern Kamchatka peninsula on the Bering Sea, the local emergency situations ministry officials said.

The quake partly destroyed a local school and a kindergarten, damaged houses and an airport, and in some places disrupted heating and electricity supplies in the village of Tilichiki and three other villages.

According to the officials, the tremor, which struck Friday at 12:25 pm (2325 GMT Thursday) was registered 70 kilometers (45 miles) east of Tilichiki, with the epicenter some 40 kilometers beneath the surface.

"So far no casualties were reported, but dozens of people got minor injuries," officials said, adding that rescuers were on their way to restore heat and electricity in the damaged villages.

Earlier the US Geological Survey measured the quake at 7.7 on the Richter scale, locating the epicenter 205 kilometers northeast of the coastal city of Il'pyrskiy

Re: April 21, 2006

Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora told an audience in Washington Thursday that repairing relations with Syria will be a major challenge, but that it must be done
Lebanon's prime minister says one year after the withdrawal of Syrian troops, Lebanon still faces many challenges as it works to restore its democracy and repair its economy.

Relations between Lebanon and Syria have been strained since the last Syrian soldiers departed Lebanon this time last year. Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora told an audience in Washington Thursday that repairing relations will be a major challenge, but that it must be done. "The scars left by the dramatic developments of the past 18 months, and the heavy-handed interference in Lebanese domestic affairs by the Syrian security establishment for many years, are not easy to heal," he said.

The development the prime minister was alluding to was the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in February 2005, for which many Lebanese blame Syria. Damascus has denied any role in the Hariri assassination or the series of bomb attacks that followed, which killed at least three other outspoken critics of Syria.

Next week in Beirut, politicians representing parliament's 14 blocs are to resume National Dialogue talks, in an attempt to resolve several issues that have paralyzed the government and have kept it from dealing with Lebanon's most pressing problem -- its beleaguered economy.

One of the most contentious issues is a demand from anti-Syrian politicians that Lebanon's pro-Syrian president, Emile Lahoud, resign. The president refuses to step down, and his opponents do not have the constitutionally required two-thirds majority to force him out. Mr. Siniora says he hopes the issue will be resolved during the talks.

"Today, Lebanon needs and deserves a forward looking president; a president who is freely and constitutionally elected; one who can help guide this historic transition while preserving national unity; a president who respects the constitution and works in conformity with it," he said.

Also on the agenda will be the future of the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah. The United States considers Hezbollah a terrorist group, and the United Nations has called for its disarmament, but many Lebanese support Hezbollah, saying it is largely responsible for Israel's withdrawal from south Lebanon six years ago. "Reconciling these considerations with the natural obligation of the state to be the sole provider of security to all its citizens and residents, and the right of the state to have a monopoly over arms, is a major challenge to be addressed in the period ahead," he said.

Since Israel's withdrawal from south Lebanon, a small area of disputed territory which sits at the meeting point of the Lebanese, Syrian and Israeli borders, known as Shebaa Farms, has become the main zone of conflict between Hezbollah and Israel. Israel controls the area, and Hezbollah and Lebanon want them out. Mr. Siniora said he discussed Shebaa Farms with President Bush Wednesday at the White House, and he is expected to take it up again Friday when he meets with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan in New York.

"We talked about Shebaa Farms and our thinking into this and how this really can help in reaching the point with the development of a strategy for how to defend Lebanon. I think this will take us to the point where we will have full monopoly of the state over the full territory of Lebanon," he said.

Prime Minister Siniora says his meetings with President Bush were very positive and that the United States is very committed to Lebanon's freedom and sovereignty.

Re: April 21, 2006

Jupiter
Equally mysterious geometric effects have been discovered in Jupiter’s atmosphere, and reported with little fanfare by NASA.  Though the scientists refer to the atmospheric structure in Figure 12 as a “quasi-hexagon,”  it is also possible within the limitations of the current data to perceive a five-sided pentagon in the Jovian polar cloud structures.  What makes this so stunning is that this stable, slowly-rotating feature of Jupiter’s northern polar region creates a “sharp temperature drop”  within its neat, geometric boundaries, keeping “the polar atmosphere and stratospheric haze isolated from the rest of the atmosphere.”   (One of us -- Wilcock -- believes it is possible that we are seeing one face of another embedded, resonant 3D geometric shape, known as a “dodecahedron,”  which is a twelve-sided object, shaped like a soccer ball, where each side is a perfect pentagon.)  Using Photoshop, he added in the geometrically-perfect “exposed pentagon”  for reference on the left image:

http://www.enterprisemission.com/_articles/05-27-2004_Interplanetary_Part_2/Interplanetary%20Day%20After%20-%20Part%202_files/image014.jpg

NASA discussed this anomalous formation openly, and even mentioned geometry, but only went so far as to suggest that it was a “quasi-hexagonal shape”  inside instead of making any mention of its equally possible pentagonal structure. [38]

Remember when we were discussing the mysterious appearance of ice at the polar regions of sun-baked Mercury?  At that time, we hinted that there might be a hyperdimensional “shielding effect”  that is protecting this region from the natural heat of the sun, introducing its own mysterious “refrigerator”  mechanism.  In Wilcock’s interpretation of the Jovian clouds, the pentagonal “wave geometry”  seems to be another signature of equally anomalous cooling in the Jovian polar regions, whereas we saw the already low-temperature polar areas of Mars contained by a hexagonal surface pattern.  It seems reasonable to conclude from this growing evidence that a planet’s surface or atmospheric heating pattern can be more affected, at times, by its resonant internal aether “geometry,”  than by direct external solar radiation.

If Jupiter is indeed experiencing a hyperdimensional “charge-up,”  in the HD model we might expect to see a literal vortex phenomenon appear at some time near one of the nodes (points) of this northern pentagon.  A movie made from about 1,200 images of Jupiter taken by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft in late 2000 reveals exactly this – a dark vortex as large as Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, at the same latitude (60 degrees N) as the pentagon’s points!  This node developed a bright spot in the center and then elongated along a straight-line pattern, consistent in its size and angle with the pentagon, with yet another parallel straight line appearing closer to Jupiter’s pole.  A Space Daily article mentions this as “unexpectedly persistent polar weather patterns on the giant planet,”  where “the movie shows that the small spots last a long time and move in organized patterns.”  [39] No comment is made, however, on how the lines that are formed are anomalously straight and parallel -- rather than following the usual curved paths of typical cloud movements (See Figure 9.)

http://www.enterprisemission.com/_articles/05-27-2004_Interplanetary_Part_2/Interplanetary%20Day%20After%20-%20Part%202_files/image015.jpg
The NASA text for the movie itself describes “the birth and motion of a dark vortex wider than Earth,”  where “a dark patch appears and within two weeks becomes a well-defined oval about the same size and shape as Jupiter’s southern hemisphere Great Red Spot.  While this dark vortex is nestled inside the auroral oval, its outer edge begins to circulate in a clockwise direction as it simultaneously develops a small, brighter, inner core.  It eventually moves out of the auroral region and deforms by flattening in latitude and growing in longitude.  Near the end of the movie, a second, smaller, dark oval appears nearer to the pole and deforms in the wind shear.”  [40]

A published study by Dr. Carolyn Porco and others on this event noted, “Other evidence suggest that large oval formation in the polar regions is a recurring phenomenon … which may be quasi-periodic, or rare but recurring, and triggered by an unusual auroral event…  However, the evolution of the dark oval is currently unexplained.”  [41] [emphasis added]

So, we have the emergence of a giant vortex phenomenon, showing clear signs of consistent geometry, in a region that NASA already admitted as hosting a “quasi-hexagonal” , i.e. pentagonal, shape in the upper-level clouds.  Though some may clearly wish to argue that this is foolish “pattern seeking,”  once again we have clear evidence of an increase in Jupiter’s energetic atmospheric activity, occurring along internally consistent, geometrically-defined (resonant “standing wave” ) patterns…

We are not the only authors to suggest that changes in Jupiter’s vortex phenomena could be related to an overall energetic increase.  A major new study on Jupiter actually made it into the April 22, 2004 edition of USA TODAY, announcing the surprise disappearance of several major oval formations in Jupiter’s atmosphere (Figure 14) -- between September 1997 and September 2000.  The study demonstrated that without these vortices in place, internal Jovian heat will not be released as efficiently into space as before… and Jupiter will likely experience substantial “global warming”  within the next 10 years – a whopping projected temperature increase of 18 degrees Fahrenheit, or 10C. [42]

Re: April 21, 2006

And here is the anticipated news related to the Hariri killing / Syrian situation, exactly as predicted.

Take this very serious

What we see here fulfulling on the identified patterns is a possible WAR scenario in the making.

Lebanon's groundbreaking tribunal
By Kim Ghattas
BBC, in Beirut

After more than 30 years of political assassinations going unpunished, Lebanon finally seems to be embarking on a new era of accountability.

In recent weeks, the UN Security Council has decided to set up a special tribunal on the murder of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

The decision makes it clear not only that the time for impunity is over, but more importantly that chief UN investigator Serge Brammertz believes he has enough evidence to put someone on trial.

The international court will be the first to try a crime described as "terrorist" by the UN.

While other special tribunals have dealt with war crimes and crimes against humanity, like in Sierra Leone or Cambodia, it will be the first time that international justice tackles a political crime that targeted a specific person.

Syrian denial

For those who dismissed the UN investigation as a politicised affair meant to frame Damascus in the Hariri murder, this is a sobering development.

On 30 March, the UN Security Council unanimously voted to authorise Secretary General Kofi Annan to start negotiations with Beirut to establish the UN-backed tribunal in the Hariri murder.

The former Lebanese prime minister, a self-made billionaire, was killed on 14 February 2005, along with 20 others in a massive blast on Beirut's seafront.

The assassination was widely blamed on Syria, but President Bashar al-Assad repeatedly denied that his country had anything to do with the murder.

Mr Assad did say, however, that if any Syrian was to be found to be involved he would be brought to justice in Syria.

But with the establishment of the special court, a domestic Syrian trial would not be acceptable to the international community.

Second report

So far no Syrian suspects have been named in the investigation, even though the first report issued by the UN team implicated top Syrian and Lebanese intelligence officials for planning and implementing the murder.

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41580000/jpg/_41580242_bomb203.jpg
Four of Lebanon's once feared top-security chiefs, all allies of Damascus, have been in jail since last summer on charges of "murder, attempted murder and carrying out a terrorist act" in connection with the killing of Hariri.

The investigation continues and is expected to last until at least mid-June when Mr Brammertz, a Belgian prosecutor and deputy prosecutor of the Hague-based International Criminal Court, is due to present his second report into the murder.

The tribunal for the Hariri murder was approved in record time. In December, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 1644 acknowledging Lebanon's request to set up a special tribunal.

The political context of the crime and the scrutiny Syria has been under means that the international community is particularly interested in speeding up this process.

After the first six months of the investigation under Mr Brammetz' predecessor, Detlev Mehlis of Germany, which were high in drama, the probe has become more low-key.

The Belgian prosecutor appears to be busy with building a case based on the evidence gathered so far, and media reports say good progress is being made.

But the UN team is still waiting to meet the Syrian president.

New instrument

There is still a lot of work to be done before the court is established.

A team of legal experts led by UN legal counsel Nicolas Michel is due in Beirut over the next few weeks to discuss the details.

The special court is expected to be a hybrid, with Lebanese and foreign judges to ensure impartiality.

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41580000/jpg/_41580240_assad203.jpg

This is a relatively new instrument of criminal law that has already been used in Sierra Leone for example.

The judges would use a mix of Lebanese and international law, but the death penalty which is available in Lebanon would not be applied.

The location of the court is still undecided, although it is certain to be outside Lebanon because of security concerns.

Cyprus has been suggested because of its proximity to the country - this would also enable the Lebanese to feel closer to the process and it would help control the costs involved.

But some legal experts in Lebanon believe The Hague would lend more credibility to the trial and has the necessary infrastructure and expertise in dealing with such courts, unlike Cyprus.

Estimates for the running costs of the tribunal vary, but they are thought to be about $25m year with no clear indication of how many years the court would have to remain in place. Lebanon has pledged to secure the funding, but is bound to face hurdles in the process.

The formation of a court to try the killers of Rafik Hariri is likely to be a learning experience for both Lebanon and the UN.

Awesome and intriguing work as usual Dutch.
Just a little note to let you know that Sunstation's back up and running.
I think it's time we got that place firing again.

Peace.
