Topic: Enlightening books for young readers

A couple months ago my younger brothers asked me for something good and meaningful to read. I sent them Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach. This got me wondering about what other books there might be for young readers age 3-12.

I know kids' books are supposed to be educational and all, but are there any you folks remember as standing out, in the same way that films discussed in the movies section stand out? Or alternately, knowing what you know now, what kind of book would you like yourself to have read as a child? Would you have even been able to grok it?

Tonight I came across Herman's Magical Universe - summarized as "A librarian teaches a child how the world works by giving him a book about the seven laws of the universe." Haven't read it, but read about it. It's a children's version of the Kybalion. Sounds pretty cool!

Re: Enlightening books for young readers

As a young reader, I liked The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien and also The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis.

Re: Enlightening books for young readers

I recall that as a kid I enjoyed A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle.    This story includes themes of telepathic aliens, interdimensional travel, the individual versus the collective, and the power of love to conquer darkness.

A concise plot summary and additional information about this book are available here.

Re: Enlightening books for young readers

I think The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho might be good one although it might be a bit too long and complex for kids much younger than about 10.

I just googled 'spiritual books for children' and came up with this page which seems to have some interesting looking books

Re: Enlightening books for young readers

The books that I would recommend for children would be the OverSoul Seven Series written by Jane Roberts (who also channeled Seth). My son was 10 when he started this books and my daughter 13...so it would be your call to see how your own child would relate. I don't think we can underestimate children's ability to understand.
The OverSoul Seven books completely removed all fear of death and 'dark mystery' of the 'other side' of any religious fear and guilt condition that I may have instilled on them during my own search. These books excited my children as to the vast possibilities and wonders of life _and_ self empowerment. I still read them from time to time and just love them! smile

Another good set of books with a metaphysical slant are the Sara books written by Esther Hicks (who channels Abraham) Very self-empowering and emphasizes the beauty and joy in life.

I think Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a GREAT choice for children.

This is an interesting link on Rudolph Steiner. I wonder what kind of subtle influences might be hidden in his books....I started to 'wake up' about these things years ago when someone enlightened me about Disney!...who was an Illuminati member.
Ayahuasca, I hope this doesn't sound like I am trying to be confrontational as to the books you recommended. They may be just wonderful and free of occult influence (not  talking pagan or wiccan) but I just really distrust any organized religion. So, just take what I say with a grain of salt! big_smile

Well I didn't recommend anything specifically, apart from The Alchemist which is the only book I've actually read (from the links I gave). The rest we're just links I found while Googling that may or may not be of help.

I believe that Steiner is generally considered by most here to a very positive teacher and as far as I'm aware Steiner Schools are highly regarded as places where kids will actually get a worthwhile education as opposed to the complete drivel they learn in state schools.

Anyway, no offence taken smile

Re: Enlightening books for young readers

I think "The Tao of Pooh & The Te of Piglet" by Benjamin Hoff is a great book for Young Readers or any age come to that.

Its not like we are fractions of the whole but rather versions of the whole.

Right on! I thought these books were great....even though I read them in my late teens and early twenties. I would also recommend those.
The interesting thing about "young reader's" books in my experience, with respect to the ones I personally read when I was a wee lad, was that I didn't fully grasp any spiritual context within them until I was older and had a bit more discernment and could gleen meaning from them. Because in many, that kind of thing is there underneath it all. You know...like seeing a bigger picture in what was considered mainstream. Like Brothers Grimm's fairy tales or Dr. Seuss. I'll even stretch a bit and say my Boy Scout manual. (Laugh and I'll tie your arms in a square knot!;) ) None of that stuff meant anything to anyone when I was being raised expcept for what was on the surface. So, no "guidance" there. Just kinda put it all together on my own later. However, considering my background, the most exposure I had to anything to could be label as "spiritual" was the Bible. hmm
But, mostly I drew and painted when I was younger. That was about the only real direction I had to go in.
To add, what I would have liked to have read when I was younger would have been books on lucid dreaming, astral travel, and creative visualization. I think that would be great tools and even fun for younger folks. Excercise that fluidity a bit, if it's not all been programmed out.
Also, there is a local author in my area, Harriet Hamilton, who writes children's books. She's spiritually centered in her writing. I'll see what more I can find out about her.

Thanks for those recommendations, everyone! I've compiled a list and will keep it handy for when my brothers ask for more. I just started reading "The Alchemist" as well.

Re: Enlightening books for young readers

Some interesting titles here.  I think I'll check them out myself before passing them on smile.

I have another book by Richard Bach that apparently goes along with Seagull called "Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah".  It's pretty good.

Years ago when my kids were little their Kokum gift us a copy of Mary Summer Rain's "Mountains, Meadows & Moonbeams".  I used to read it to them occasionally at bedtime but I don't remember much about it now.  I do recall that I wasn't overly comfortable with some of it at the time.

I also remember reading a fiction novel back when I was a kid called "Stranger with My Face" by Lois Duncan.  Again, it's been a long while since I read it but it did leave it's mark on my mind.  It has to do with astral projection in a dark, twisted kind of way.

Time to read these again from a fresh perspective.

Re: Enlightening books for young readers

Shel Silverstein's books affected me greatly as a kid, and now I see the significance in them.  "The Giving Tree" and "The Missing Piece" are both fantastic.  Edited to add "The Missing Piece Meets the Big 'O'," which really isn't a dirty book, I promise. smile

Re: Enlightening books for young readers

2 books i read after my teens, but are recommended for ages 12 up are " THE MAGIC PRESENCE"  and  " UNVEILED MYSTERIES "  by   Godfre Ray King.   A man is hiking on Mount Shasta in California where a 'stranger' offers him a cup of liquid light . The hiker  accepts an invitation by the unusual stranger  [ Saint Germain ]  to accompany him into a hidden retreat inside the mountain where he is instructed in cosmo science, shown technlogical inventions from ancient civilisations, and taken on fascinating out of body soul journeys. Saint Germain teaches him about his Divine Self which he calls the I AM PRESENCE and gives him instruction on how to make definite attunement with the Presence. All this with some danger and suspense thrown in. Written in the 1930s and still great for older children and adults.
