Former Tory minister Profumo dies

Former Conservative minister John Profumo, who was at the centre of one of the UK's most famous political scandals, has died at the age of 91.
He passed away at midnight surrounded by his family, a spokesman for London's Chelsea and Westminster Hospital said.

The former War Minister was admitted two days beforehand after a stroke.

Mr Profumo was forced to resign from the Cabinet in 1963 for lying to the House of Commons over his affair with call girl Christine Keeler.

In the scandal at the height of the Cold War, it also emerged that she had been involved with Commander Yevgeny Ivanov, a Soviet intelligence officer and assistant naval attache in London.

Charity worker

Mr Profumo's school friend, journalist Lord Deedes, said he had atoned for his mistakes with the charity work he undertook after his departure from politics.

He told the BBC: "The fact is what he did - and continued to do until quite recently - a very long stint of social work for the poor of east London.

"And if that isn't considered to be sufficient atonement for the mistake he made, then there's no such thing as forgiveness."

Political historian Anthony Howard said the Profumo Affair did "tremendous damage" to the Macmillan government.

"The country went hysterical," he said.

He also said Mr Profumo would never talk about the scandal "ever".

A charming and respected Tory politician who was educated at Harrow and Oxford, John Profumo was the rising star of Harold Macmillan's Conservative government.

After entering the Commons in 1940 aged 25, becoming the youngest MP in the House, he was made Secretary of State for War in July 1960.

Sex parties

His brief affair with Ms Keeler began after he was introduced to her by fashionable London osteopath and artist Stephen Ward at Lord Astor's Cliveden country estate in Berkshire in July 1961.

In an interview in 1989 she described the then minister as "a lot of fun".

"But he was too old for me. I really just went out with him because I was impressed with who he was."

In March 1963, Mr Profumo, who was married to the actress Valerie Hobson, made a statement to MPs denying any impropriety in his relationship with Ms Keeler.

He resigned in June 1963 after admitting he had misled the House of Commons.

The Profumo Affair was one of the most sensational political scandals of the 20th Century, which was later dramatised in a film starring Sir Ian McKellen as John Profumo.

Stephen Ward - infamous for his sex parties involving the rich and influential - was prosecuted for living on immoral earnings. He committed suicide on the last day of the trial before the jury reached its verdict.

Ms Keeler was found guilty on unrelated charges - for not attending as a witness in the trial of a man shot at her home - and sentenced to nine months in Holloway Prison.

John Profumo's departure led to Harold Macmillan's Conservative government losing the general election the following year.

Charity work

Within days of his political departure, Mr Profumo turned up at the refuge centre Toynbee Hall and asked to help with the washing up.

He stayed for nearly 40 years, using his political skills to raise huge funds, and expanding the charity's activities to include social programmes and youth training.

His wife also gave her time to helping others, working until her death in 1998 for the leprosy charity Lepra.

John Profumo was awarded the CBE in 1975.

In 1995 Margaret Thatcher, who called him "one of our national heroes", invited him to her 70th birthday dinner, and seated him next to the Queen.

Lady Thatcher said then: "It's time to forget the Keeler business. His has been a very good life."

Milosevic 'found dead in prison'

Former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic has died in The Hague, radio reports and his lawyer says.
Steven Kay, Mr Milosevic's lawyer, told BBC News 24 that he had been found dead in his cell on Saturday morning.

Mr Milosevic, 64, has been on trial at the UN war crimes tribunal for genocide and other war crimes.

The tribunal last month rejected a request by Mr Milosevic to go to Russia for medical treatment. He had high blood pressure and a heart condition.

Secretary Rice says it might have been better if The Hague tribunal had been able to render a judgment on Slobodan Milosevic. But, she says, the final verdict of history is already clear, that the former Yugoslav president was one of the most maligned forces in Europe for quite a long time.

In an airborne talk with reporters on the first leg of a long flight from Chile to Indonesia, the secretary said Milosevic was undoubtedly responsible for the deaths of many, many people in the Balkans conflicts, as well as the breakup of Yugoslavia, and the long-term estrangement of its parts from the international community.

However, she sounded a positive note on the future of the Balkans region, saying that good things are beginning to arise after the Milosevic era. And, she said, the United States wants to see a better future for the people of Serbia-and-Montenegro, and is working with them to achieve this and their free integration with the rest of Europe.

Russia deal 'off Iran's agenda'

Iran says Moscow's compromise proposal on its nuclear programme is "off the agenda", after the Islamic Republic was reported to the UN Security Council.
A foreign ministry spokesman said "circumstances have changed".

Russia has sought to persuade Iran to move its enrichment programme to Russian territory, which would allow closer international monitoring.

On Wednesday, the UN nuclear watchdog referred Iran to the council, which has the power to impose sanctions.

Milosevic died of heart attack, UN says, but questions remain

Former Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic died of a heart attack, the UN war crimes court said, but refused completely to rule out a poisoning theory as it prepared his body for release.

After a day of swirling rumours over the death of the man at the centre of the bloody Balkans conflict, the tribunal in The Hague announced that initial autopsy results showed he had died of a myocardial infarction.

Commonly known as a heart attack, this is caused by a blood clot blocking a coronary artery, leading to the death of heart muscle.

A statement said pathologists had identified two heart conditions that he suffered from and which "would explain the myocardial infarction."

The heart attack finding put paid to the hypothesis of suicide entertained even by ICTY chief prosecutor Carla Del Ponte, who said in an interview published Sunday: "He could have done it as a last act of defiance towards us. Perhaps he did commit suicide."

Earlier she noted: "It's odd, although naturally it is possible, that he died unexpectedly without the doctors noticing that his health had suddenly worsened."

He was found dead in his cell Saturday at the court, where he had been on trial since February 2002 on more than 60 counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Balkans conflicts.

The charges included the Srebrenica massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and boys, the biggest single atrocity in Europe since World War II.

Milosevic wrote of poison threat, legal aide says

Slobodan Milosevic claimed a day before his death that he risked being poisoned, his legal advisor said, fueling swirling rumours over the demise of the former Yugoslav leader while on trial for war crimes.

Shortly before doctors began an autopsy on the body, Zdenko Tomanovic, who advised Milosevic during his trial over more than four years, read from a letter the ex-president had written Friday to the Russian embassy.

"'They would like to poison me. I'm seriously concerned and worried'," he quoted Milosevic as writing.

Saddam prosecutor wants guilty hanged promptly

The trial of Saddam Hussein and seven co-defendants resumed with the chief prosecutor calling for the prompt hanging of any found guilty, while bombs and mortars exploded across Baghdad.

Thailand to make evacuation plans after underwater tremors

Thailand will prepare evacuation plans for tourists and residents on the southern coast hit by the 2004 tsunami following a series of underwater tremors in the Andaman Sea.

"The situation is worrying and we want to alert local authorities and people so that they can prepare for an evacuation" if a big quake strikes, said Samit Thammasarot, the head of the National Committee on Natural Disaster Warning.

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Tens of thousands of opposition supporters marched in Taipei on Sunday to protest the Taiwanese president's decision to abolish a committee responsible for unification with rival China.

President Chen Shui-bian announced last month he was ending the 15-year-old National Unification Council and doing away with its guidelines, which commit Taiwan to eventual unification with the mainland. The decision angered China and provoked strong criticism from Taiwan's opposition Nationalist Party, which supports eventual reunification.

Taipei city councilor Wu Guo-dong told demonstrators their protest was necessary to save Taiwan from the threat of an armed confrontation with China.

"We have to fight against Taiwan independence which will bring us to the brink of war," he said.

Three-day alert declared on Israel’s northern border from Sunday. DEBKAfile reports Lebanese Hizballah poised for major attack

The IDF has rushed large forces to the border region, thrown up roadblocks on main highways and deployed mobile units. People living in the border zone were advised to open their secure rooms and shelters and refrain from going out to work in their fields and orchards.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report: Lebanon’s 14-party national conciliation commission holds a crucial conference Monday, March, 12. Israeli generals are divided over how this will affect border security. According to one school of thought, Hizballah might find it more prudent to refrain from aggression against Israeli targets in view of the eleventh-hour deal its leader Hassan Nasrallah has struck with Lebanon’s majority leader in parliament, Saad Hariri.

Under this accord, Hariri and his faction will abstain for backing the Druze leader Walid Jumblatt’s demand for the Hizballah to disarm and disband its armed militia, in according with a UN security council resoltuion. Some Israeli military chiefs do not believe that with this deal in his pocket, Nasrallah will call attention to his organization by attacking Israel.

A second group of Israeli generals, led by OC northern command Maj.-Gen Udi Adam, believes that Lebanon’s domestic politics do not determine Hizballah’s tactical decisions.

They see one strong motive for the Hizballah chief to go on the offensive as being to showing the extremist flag in order to encourage Hamas to go it alone and form a government without Mahmoud Abbas’s defeated Fatah. It would be a good moment to meddle in Palestinian politics in view of the standoff in Hamas-Fatah coalition negotiations. Over the weekend, Fatah sneeringly advised Hamas to give up because they were incapable off governing. Then, Monday, March 13, Abbas sets off for Europe, placing the coalition bid on ice for absence of a presidential hand to sign ministerial appointments.

The second group of Israeli military chiefs also report:

3. Nasrallah is still burning to get even for his kidnap gang’s defeat in battle against Israeli forces on Nov. 21, 2005 at the divided village of Ghajar.

DEBKAfile discloses: Assad invites UN Hariri investigator “to tea”

Serge Brammertz, head of the UN inquiry team delving into the assassination a year ago of Lebanese politician Rafiq Hariri arrived in Damascus Thursday, March 9, to take up an unusual invitation. A leading murder suspect, Syrian president Bashar Assad, invited him to the palace for a cup of tea.

This gesture is taken in DEBKAfile’s Middle East sources as a dramatic U-turn in the president’s adamant refusal to be questioned on the crime, a face-saving surrender to long pressure. He knows that his guest will take the apparent social occasion as the first opportunity to question him however politely. The president’s example will also tell his subordinate fellow-suspects, including his own brother-in-law, military intelligence overlord Gen. Asaf Shawqat, that they too are not immune to quizzing.

However, the Syrians prepared a new stratagem to get themselves off the hook of the inquiry, a bid to pin the assassination on “Islamic fundamentalists.”

The visit was arranged in lengthy discussions between Brammertz and Syrian foreign minister Walid Mualem ahead of the UN official’s presentation of his report to the UN secretary-general Kofi Annan on March 15.

The Syrians find themselves at a disadvantage by the Belgian investigator’s secretiveness in contrast with his predecessor, Detlev Mehlis, who made a practice of press leaks. Brammertz is even cagey with his team-mates on the UN panel.

Russia sees no reason for UN sanctions against Syria

Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov made this assertion when he greeted his Syrian counterpart, Walid Muallem, in Moscow. He said Damascus was cooperating with the UN inquiry into the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri a year ago, and urged Syria to cooperate fully. The UN Security Council, which has accused Damascus of failing to cooperate fully with the probe into the complicity of Syrian officials, awaits the first report by UN investigator Serge Brammertz this week.
