Topic: what is this thing?

I was driving today, had my digi camera with me, and rolled up to a stoplight right next to this big structured thing on top of a building.  Right in the middle of town, though I've never seen it before (it's in a different neighborhood). 

Is this just a routine cell / communications tower, or might there be other things going on?  It looked different than the ones I've seen before, in that what appears to be giant 'speaker' type things have their front faces covered in some sort of draped material.

(ps. yes, those are big greasy chem clouds...)

Excellent photographs, no idea what they/it might be from here but it is sort of an intimidating and grotesque contraption.  Seems useless overall unless there is some practical application which we dont know about.  (duh)

Looks like some kind of antenna to me. Perhaps you need to find out some more about the building to get a clue about what this might be.

Weird.  You could always walk into the building and ask people what that thing is, or rather what they were told that it is. .

Next time I'm in that neck of the woods, I think that will make for an interesting reconnaissance mission.

Thanks for that info Lee.  I had a feeling it was something to do with that.  It's sickening to me really...!  Especially after seeing Doc's recent post about microwaved water's effect on plant life, etc.
