Kobe Bryant is in the Illuminati, and his 81-point game was no accident. Here is the proof:

He scored 81 points in his 666th career regular season game.

6 + 6 + 6 = 18 --> 81

His height is [6]'[6]" and the year is 200[6].

2006 is a special year, because it contains the date June 6, 2006, which is 6-6-06.

Kobe Bryant was drafted in the year 1996. Using the "99" from "1996," you get the following: 9 + 9 = 18.  18 inverted is 81, and 99 inverted is 66. Thus, 1996 = 1666 (via the 99 --> 66 inversion, which was based upon the 9 + 9 = 18 --> 81 inversion).

The leftover 1 from 1666 (the "year" that he was drafted) matches up with his uniform # 8: 1 and 8 paired together make 18 or 81.

Hmm, well, speculative numerology is a rather "airy-fairy" area, I was into that area myself a couple of years ago. In my understanding these numerological experiments can be truly fascinating mostly from a subjective point of view; you see these connections and feel there might be something of interest, but when you explain to other people it seems mostly ridiculous.
However, while I don't doubt that the numerological structure of "the Matrix" is at least in some ways valid, and observing these patterns might be a fun exercise for the brain, it is also very easy to take the whole thing to an unhealthy extreme.

I also think it is important to keep numerology somewhat "grounded", if you care about your mental health that is. 
Besides, you tend to get rather paranoid if you continue to see these numerical structures everywhere. I've been there myself.  While synchronicity is
fascinating when it comes to numbers, it might be helpful to remember the selectiveness of human perception. If your filter is 666, or 18, you will likely see every number as related to it. On the other hand, this number is a whole phenomenon in itself, as it does seem to be the main core of the numerocigal structure. But the human mind is really creative when it comes to adding things together and seeing numerogical (many times non-logical) connections...

I remember this.  I was living out in CO at the time.  I remember the town where this all took place was called Eagle, CO.  The people there loved it because it brought so much publicity

UPDATE:

6 x 6 x 6 + 10 (the number of letters in his name) = 226. The score of the game was 122-to-104. 122 + 104 = 226. Thus, the only difference between the outcome of the game and 666 was "Kobe Bryant". And, with the Lakers being down by 14 at halftime, and Bryant scoring 55 points in the second half, he was indeed the difference-maker in the game.

Yes, these are speculative but everything fits to its place.

Now the question is; can we also do that with e.g. Dallas player Dirk Nowitzki's points in a match or Utah's Mehmet Okur's rebaund statistics through December? What I mean is, as Solar Sphinx said speculative numerology is a rather "airy-fairy" area and we may see anything that we want to see..
