Topic: Well its here... memory deletion pills

http://aolsvc.news.aol.com/news/article … 0000000001

Thoughts? Opinions?

Personally, mine is; we're moving closer and closer into a world where we run or evade from our problems instead of DIRECTLY dealing with it on the most fundamental basis. I don't really want to say what that basis is but I do know these methods are not going to make things dissapear but will only make the equation to the problem even greater.

It makes sense now about the whole alien abduction thing and our memories being deleted so we don't remember the trauma or experience in itself. Appearently we already have the technology now as humans, so it would be logical to assume that any species more technologicaly advanced over us would surely have it too: perhaps to a much greater extent in efficiency as that would also be logical to assume. I guess things are really coming together now as a whole.

I think the question we have to ask ourselves now is why do the aliens wish for us to not remember the abduction? Or atleast I ask myself that; maybe someone else knows? Do they care for us in that regards so we're not traumatized for life and only wish to conduct their experiments, learn, and move on perhaps? Or do they wish to know a possible enemy and be able to conquer us if we become a threat?

If you read some of the best research that's available on the subject, you'll probably find the answer.

I'd suggest that any time you don't know something for sure, it's safest if you are prepared for the worst-possible scenario.   Since your question deals with the subject of memory erasure, I personally would reflect on why it is that every government, military, corporation, secret society, and just about every other form of human organization on Earth holds all sorts of information secret?   Why do you as an individual choose to keep some things secret?

Because knowledge is power.  That's a bottom-line answer pretty much everyone can agree on.  So, proceed from there and do some homework -- brush up on the key research on your own and I'm sure you'll be able to form an informed opinion.  Fortunately for us, a lot of difficult legwork has already been done by others, so now getting familiar with what's already out there is just a matter of sitting down and reading it.  A word of warning, though: once you've got a lot of the basics down, don't be surprised if you find yourself in the Twilight Zone, for real. smile

Re: Well its here... memory deletion pills

It seems that the "solution" will only exacerbate the problem. Dealing with trauma by deleting memory is like dealing with traffic jams by building higher-capacity freeways: it only invites more roadside real-estate development (traumatic situations) and therefore more traffic (trauma) until the freeway (man's tolerance for trauma) is clogged (exceeded) once again. When the pill is widely available, the "socially acceptable trauma threshold" will simply increase. Eventually PTSD will become a problem again, and a stronger pill or more severe technique will be required. As people become hardened against feeling the repurcussions of their actions and those of others, their capacity to commit and tolerate evil will increase. Those of us not regularly deleting our daily traumas will be horrified, as we are even now by the currently acceptable levels.

When asked, almost everyone says "I wouldn't change a thing about my past because it made me who I am today," but in practice they're going to be erasing things left and right if given the chance, because one can only make such a statement with a certain amount of hindsight. If a "morning-after memory abortion pill" comes out, who will bother to allow unpleasant memories to exist long enough to develop hindsight? The potential for abuse will be massive. I doubt it will be used only by victims of rape and bear maulings, just like Viagra isn't used only by men with faulty junk. Recreational memory erasure: do something you know you'll regret for good reason, with plans to erase it afterwards. Have your cake and eat it too. Or, for the more sadistic, sexually abuse your children/the altar boy/the babysitter, then give them the pill afterwards and talk them into thinking it wasn't so bad, so that it won't visibly alter their daily functioning and they'll be less inclined to tell on you.

Sorry to be so negative, but this is quite disturbing.

Re: Well its here... memory deletion pills

Well see now the trick is to take some of that together with some ginko biloba or something and see what happens.  XD

Also, it's going to become a common societal question among those of the general public, "What did you erase."

Then there's the implications from within the criminal community - because not knowing you committed a crime would be a MAJOR help in proving your innocence or in passing a lie detector. But then you would know that you took the memory eraser pills but could still NOT know what it was you erased. Couldn't that eventually make a person go insane? Oh, wait! It's reasonable to assume that person would already BE insane! DOH.

I am as is Void.

Yowza!  Good points, czyx.  Certainly made me think.

* When we start identifying wisdom with our ability to comprehend its form, what wisdom is that?
* Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
* People want platitudes, not progress.

Re: Well its here... memory deletion pills

The interesting thing that I see that hasn't been mentioned yet is that we already have drugs available for this purpose that DON'T remove memories.

MDMA, better known by it's street name ecstasy, has been shown to be extremely effective for use with PTSD patients. It doesn't supress memory, instead the user is placed in a state in which recalling such memories ceases to be traumatic, which aids the healing process. Unfortunately, and for these very reasons, it's completely undeserving of it's Schedule 1 classification and cannot be used legally.

I could also say that perhaps those who hope to realize value in memory suppressing drugs will ultimately attempt to see themselves as being merciful, since they could use them to erase visions/memories that would normally require the death/imprisonment of any witnesses.

I suppose that if you can erase specific memories from someone, then they aren't lying under oath when they say that they don't recall giving the order to (insert any horrible atrocity here). With this in mind, this drug is perfect for political operatives as it would allow them to make bloody decisions without even the remote possibility of someone somehow acquiring a guilty conscience.

Of course, there would also be some seriously sick sadistic criminals and sexual predators out there who would eventually consider the myriad of possibilities when using this drug in conjunction with a strong disassocative, like Rohypnol. Pretty girl drinks something put onto her beer at a party, and not only can they lead her away, but then they could erase any memory of the crime as well if she should somehow remember it.
