Scanner trials start at stations

The first trial of body scanners that detect explosives is to start in a move to boost security for rail passengers in the wake of the 7 July bombings.
Passengers travelling to Heathrow airport from Paddington station, west London, are to be randomly tested, but participation will be voluntary.

The scanner is being unveiled before a four-week trial starts on Thursday.

The government hopes lessons can be learned about how such technology could help in the fight against terrorism.

Mecca pilgrims stone devil at start of Muslim feast

Muslim pilgrims poured into the valley of Mina east of the holy city of Mecca to affirm their allegiance to God by stoning symbols of Satan, in the riskiest ritual of the hajj.

Pilgrims killed in Hajj stampede

At least 50 Muslim pilgrims have been killed in a crush in the stone-throwing ritual during the Hajj pilgrimage in Mina, Saudi Arabia.
The ritual, on the last day of the annual pilgrimage, has been marred by deadly stampedes in the past.

This year, the authorities built barriers and deployed tens of thousands of stewards in a bid to improve safety.

In 2004, more than 200 pilgrims were trampled to death while performing the same ceremony.

Former US president Ford in hospital with pneumonia

Former US president Gerald Ford has been taken to hospital near his home in California suffering from pneumonia, a spokeswoman for the 92-year-old ex-leader said.

The oldest surviving US president was admitted to the Eisenhower Medical Center, in the desert town of Rancho Mirage, near Palm Springs, on Saturday, where he is recovering, his office said.

Biological attack on West 'simply a question of time': US official

It is only a matter of time before terror groups like Al-Qaeda use weapons of mass destruction (WMD) against Western targets, the United States' counter-terrorism chief Henry Crumpton warned.

Such an attack using biological agents could pose an even greater threat to security than a nuclear strike, Crumpton, the US State Department coordinator for counter-terrorism, told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper.

The former US Central Intelligence Agency officer also spoke of the changing nature of terrorism and how the fight against it was likely to last "decades".

"We are talking about micro targets such as al-Qaeda which, when combined with WMD, have a macro impact. I rate the probability of terror groups using WMD (to attack Western targets) as very high," he told the newspaper.

"It's simply a question of time. And it is not just the nuclear threat that bothers me. I think, if anything, the biological threat is going to grow. As catastrophic as a nuclear attack would be, it would be self-contained.

"But if you look at a worst-case scenario for a biological attack, it would be difficult to determine whether or not it was a terrorist attack, and it would be far more difficult to contain."

Crumpton said that following the 2001 war in Afghanistan against the ruling Taliban, allied forces had discovered Al-Qaeda had been working on anthrax programmes to use against the West.

"They had hired a very experienced biologist to work on this. They were very serious about it and there is no reason to believe they have given up on their interest," he added.

The official said fears that terrorist groups could acquire WMD from so-called rogue states like Iran or Syria were behind Washington's determination to face down Tehran over its controversial nuclear programme.

"If we look at the threat posed by Iran, they have links with Hizbollah (the Lebanese Shiite Muslim militia), which is a terrorist organisation with a global reach, and they are actively pursuing WMD," he explained.

"And the leadership has made a conscious decision to defy international treaties. I am deeply troubled by this."

Crumpton said the West had "made life very difficult" for the Al-Qaeda network following the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States but more still needed to be done.

Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden was "in all probability" still alive, he said, and Syria also posed a threat to western security.

"The regime continues to support terror organisations. And we know that the Baathist leadership (of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein) fled to Damascus taking with them money and terrorist expertise, and we cannot rule out the fact that some of that expertise related to WMD," Crumpton said.

Agca to be released in 2010

Mehmet Ali Agca, the man who tried to kill pope John Paul II and murdered a prominent Turkish journalist, will be released from prison in 2010, Anatolia news agency reported, citing prosecutors.

The prosecutors made the decision after the Appeals Court overturned an earlier decision for Agca's release, which led to his re-imprisonment Friday after eight days of freedom.

Agca should be now released on January 18, 2010, Anatolia reported Monday, adding that the decision had been sent to the Istanbul jail where Agca is imprisoned.

He had been released on January 12 after a quarter of a century behind bars in Italy and Turkey, but Justice Minister Cemil Cicek appealed the decision on the grounds that reductions from his jail term under amnesty laws and penal code amendments had been miscalculated.

The Appeals Court heeded the minister's request Friday and overturned the decision, and Agca was taken back into custody within several hours.
